Continuing homicidal violence in El Salvador

According to El Salvador’s National Civil Police, the current daily average of homicides for the month of August in El Salvador is eleven. The Justice and Public Security Minister said the country’s new President’s plan against these crimes is now yielding results because in the last nine days the homicide average has been seven. The total of murder victims in El Salvador this month has now reached 970.

Ciudad Juarez murders soar
El Diario (Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua) 8/25/09
The original report in this paper stated that eleven persons were murdered yesterday (Mon.) in nine events in Juarez, all within six hours. One of the victims was an ex-police officer. [ The preceding was logged in just after midnight, on 8/25, but the same paper also reported four additional homicides in the city following the eleven previously cited. Then, “La Jornada” (a Mexico City paper) raised the total of murder victims in Juarez by yet one more, to sixteen, for the day.]

Weapons seized in Juarez
Diario de Yucatan (Merida, Yucatan) 8/25/09
Mexican army personnel searched four “safe houses” in Juarez and seized “an arsenal which includes a long distance missile launcher, grenades and more than 30 thousand cartridges, 58 firearms and various narcotics.” “The seized weaponry is similar to that used by armed forces in combat, such as the missile launcher, which can attain accurate shots of more than one thousand meters.” (equiv. 6/10th mi.)

Program to educate illegal aliens
El Financiero (Mexico City) 8/25/09
From Aug. 31st. to Sept. 4th, the ten Mexican consulates in the United States will launch a campaign to educate Mexican workers illegally in the U.S. concerning their individual rights as workers. Among these are the right to join labor unions, to earn minimum hourly wages and to overtime pay. Further, that employers may not denounce them to U.S. immigration agencies.
