Misc/Chat Moving to Tennessee

This too shall pass.
We'll be moving to Tennessee this fall, and should be able to establish a garden at our new home next year. I plan to use some raised beds for vegetables, and also plant whatever fruit and nut trees, and berries, etc., are suitable for our location (eastern Tennessee, probably within an hour or so of Knoxville). Advice on gardening in a new climate will be welcome!

I do plan to put the tree plantings in using permaculture principles -- I'll be homeschooling my 15-y-o granddaughter for the next three years, and she's interested in permaculture and gardening. I would also like to start using aquaponics. I have books on both topics.

Neither here nor there.
Depending on your zone and how soon you land in TN you might be able to start winter garlic, walking onions, and winter leeks at your new place for mid summer harvest. Soon as you land start seeking out local gardening experts for more information about the soil types at your place, clay is a pain to garden in.

Thanks -- it will probably be the middle of November before we are settled into our new place. I suppose it depends on the weather this fall, whether we'd be able to get the alliums planted or not. And I do plan to talk to the local Ag. Extension agent as soon as possible after we get there.

There is a series of homesteading videos that I watch on YouTube, called Appalachia'a Homestead With Patara. Her farm is in Tennesee, and her gardens look great. Maybe you could get some ideas from them.
