I’m confused. They’re leaving the shot up body in the tent inside the woods near their house? Or moving tent and all back to the pickup? Near their house would leave too many clues tying it to them if there ever was an investigation.

Sure hope they just stopped to work on Sofia and that there wasn’t an ambush set up.

Dang cliff again. Thanks!

In the woods between the two houses, with the other house looking abandoned with no id, in freezing weather. Until someone explores the woods and finds the tent, no issues. Once the snow melts, no tracks towards the house at all. A couple weeks from now, everyone will be gone and no links to speak of will remain pointing towards Paige’s, especially with the evidence he was in the other house. Besides, who will find it and will they care

but this little series of stress points is rapidly becoming a small mountain range (at least a nasty ridge line) not just a cliff.

We've been here before so, as my wife says, we'll have to pack our patience as the tale can only unfold as fast as our author can get it down. Coming up supper time here so I've got to stash the b. bread & muffins then get the wok unlimbered.

When you can, as you have time. We'll survive . . .

Oh my, this weekend needs to go fast...Even better would be another chapter tonight. Argg, just a thought, if there is another chapter it will mean an even bigger cliff...

Thank you.

“Silas! Arm Up! We have to go find them!” Ivar said as he was rummaging in one of the compartments in bed of his truck.

“Wait! What the **** are you talking about?” Silas said as he caught up with Ivar.

“They left over two hours ago and still haven’t made it! Something happened. We have to go find them!” Ivar said as he pulled a plate carrier over his head.

“Damn! Do you have more of a plan than ‘go find them’ or is it going to be like Kingfisher in Basra?”

“Full Basra.” Ivar grabbed a small pack from the same compartment his plate carrier was in.

“OK, give me a moment to get my kit on and we can head out.” Silas went to his truck. He had gear to get.

Petra stood there, trying to understand what was going on. It slowly dawned on her Amber, Sofia and Jonas were now missing, and they were going looking for them. That left her here all alone with Jennifer. What if there were more shooters out there? What could she do? What SHOULD she do?

As Silas and Ivar headed towards the door, she had to ask.

“What can I do to help? What should I do while you are gone?”

Silas turned to look at Petra.

“Do whatever you have to do to keep you and Jennifer safe. Stick here in the barn, maybe keep working on the vehicles. We will take the FJ so we have a radio. We will call you and keep you up to date.”

“THAT’S IT? HANG OUT AND WAIT?” Petra didn’t like the sound of it.

Ivar spoke from the doorway.

“And Pray.”

That’s all she seemed to be doing lately. She didn’t like it. It usually end up with someone getting hurt and Jonas making her half naked.

So I'm probably going to pray for a little closure/resolution here but I'm sure our author has obligations on his Sunday; methinks I'll just tuck in. Lots to do tomorrow and it's 2310 local.

Maybe even get the aforesaid resolutions referred to above.

Bon nuit, mes amis . . .

On the Road, Looking for Answers

The drive to the base was filled with so many emotions. Silas drove while Ivar examined every turn off, every embankment, every shadow as they drove, desperate for clues. They found nothing. When they got to the base, there were still no answers, only questions.

Ivar was livid. He stormed around demanding information, but there was none to get. No one had seen Mickelson since he got back. Everyone thought he was either still off on the recovery mission or had gone on to meet up with his family at their next duty station.

Silas worked the almost non-existent communications channels, trying to find out who else might have headed back this way. He got only half-assed info at best. He did find out at least three of the guys he sent north were gone. One of them was Mickelson.

They got back together to compare notes.

“They couldn’t have vanished into thin air!” Ivar exclaimed.

“Well, we didn’t see any sign of them on the way here. They aren’t here. Where the hell does that leave us? Where else would they go?” Silas asked him, hoping to force Ivar’s head back into problem solving.

The MedTech standing there pulled out all that high level Lean Six Sigma brainstorming training he was forced to do throughout his career for his input.

“Guys, if she was hurt as bad as you say, they probably took her to the hospital in the city. We don’t have any Operating Room capability here.”

“Can you guys call and check?” Ivar pounced on this thread of hope.

“We haven’t had phone service for over a month now.”

“Shit! Let’s go!” Silas said as he grabbed Ivar’s arm and began pulling him towards the door.

Ivar yelled over his shoulder as they went out the door.

“Call us on the radio if you hear anything.”

Decisions

The R32 shot down the driveway. Amber had Sofia’s arm in her hands as she struggled to start an IV as the little car slid sideways around a curve, headed for the main road.

“Give me three seconds of straight, damnit!”

Jonas said nothing, but let off the gas. They coasted up to the main road intersection.

“Got it! Go right!” Amber barked as she hooked up the IV line to the IV bag.

“Base is to the left!” Jonas stated forcefully.

“Sofia needs surgery. Her Femur is broken. She will need rods, plates and who knows what else. I’m not doing it on a cafeteria table with a pocket knife. I think I have her stabilized at least as much as I could at the clinic and what she needs is a surgeon.”

“Ivar is expecting us to go to the clinic.”

“He will just have to catch up. You can call him when we get there. You know the route well enough. Get us there!”

Jonas turned to the right and brought the horsepower up. Soon they were speeding down the road. On one of the straight stretches, he glanced over. Amber had a bag of IV fluid hung from the passenger grab handle. It was already half empty. She noticed his glance.

“Let me borrow one of your arms for a moment. I need a unit of blood.”

“Don’t you need to know my blood type?” Jonas asked, both curious and worried now.

“Nope. She’s AB positive so she can take it from anyone. I’m going to start with you and a unit, then if it takes too long to get there, I’ll pull a unit of mine.”

Amber was pulling out a vacuum-packed pouch full of blood donation gear as she was explaining.

“Now, give me your arm.”

Still on the Road

Jonas was working hard. He had to go slower while Amber was syphoning blood from him. When she was finished, she capped the IV site with a saline lock. With both hands free now, he was pushing his driving ability, trying to get them there in time. He heard Amber talking, but not to him.

“Don’t you dare quit on me! You can’t leave us! You will be ok, as long as you keep fighting.”

“Jonas, how much longer?”

“Twenty minutes.”

“OK, Hazard lights and don’t ****ing stop!”

“No problem. You keep her going and I will get us there.”

At the Hospital

They were fortunate the guard at the gate recognized the R32 and was raising the gate when they arrived. Instead of the parking lot, Jonas went straight to the ambulance entrance.

Jonas dove out of the car and headed to the entrance. As the doors opened, he leaned in and yelled.

“I got a GSW victim and need a stretcher right now!”

He didn’t wait to see the reaction of the startled faces in the ER.

The nurse looked at Jonas and said to his retreating back. “Another one? One more and we can upgrade you to the presidential suite.”

He ran back to the car where Amber was opening the passenger door.

“Look out, Amber. I can carry her in.”

“Sure”

Amber backed up. And stumbled backward. She had to catch herself, and was able to only go down to one knee instead of falling all the way over. Her head was spinning. No food since a light breakfast, down a unit of blood, and all the stress. God! She had to pull herself together!

When Amber was able to get to her feet, she saw Jenson was already at the door, being met with several other people and a gurney. She started limping towards the door. She had a patient to take care of.

Table for Two

“OK, Jennifer, you heard Ivar. They are going to the city to meet up with Amber, Sofia and your dad. That means it’s you and me for dinner tonight. Since we have to stay where we can monitor the radio, dinner will be out here. While I work on this pile of wiring and listen to the radio, you get to cook dinner.”

“Sure thing, Petra. What do we have out here to cook?”

“Check the cabinet to the right of the stove in mine. There should be a Mac and Cheese box. We can split it.”

“Cool! Give me about twenty minutes.” Jennifer headed to Petra’s trailer.

Petra sat there staring at the radio. She didn’t want to worry Jennifer yet. What she told her wasn’t exactly correct or complete. What Ivar really said was they hoped Jonas, Amber and Sofia went to the hospital in the city since they didn’t find a trace of them anywhere along the way to the base or at the base. The only other logical explanation was they went to the city.

Petra didn’t know what they would do if they weren’t in the city. She didn’t even want to think about how they would go forward if Amber, Sofia and Jonas were gone.

Petra stared at the glowing lights of the radio and waited. She barely looked at the rat’s nest of wires in front of her. When she did, all she saw was something that looked like what her life was becoming; a scrambled mess she might now have to untangle with only the help of a 9-year-old kid. For some reason, all Petra could do was start praying.

“Unser Fadder im Himmel,

dei Naame loss heilich sei.

Dei Reich loss kumme.

Dei Wille loss geduh sei,

uff die Erd wie im Himmel.

Unser deeglich Brot gebb uns heit,

Un vergebb unser Schulde…”

Table for One

Jonas stood along the wall. He would move out of the way left and right as the nurses came to cabinets but he made it crystal clear he was not leaving the room while Amber and Sofia were there. None of the nurses tried to tell him otherwise. It might have something to do with the pistol on his hip seen through his unzipped jacket but it was more likely the carbine held loosely by the receiver on his hand.

The hospital guard walked in, alerted to a problem. His hand was on his pistol. Jenson turned to look at him. He could tell the guard was somewhere between scared and panicked. He thought he recognized him from his stay and frequent visits for Jennifer.

“I’m glad you are here. We don’t have enough staff on the base to send a pair of guards like they did with me.” He was trying to sound relieved and non-threatening. He hoped it worked.

“Jenson, is it?”

“Yeah. It’s me. I’m here making sure they don’t try to come finish their attempt. If you can let the rest of the staff know to keep their eyes peeled for stranger danger. We don’t want a firefight to break out in the ER.”

Jonas saw the guard following what he was telling him, falling in line with what he was telling him. Without the guard realizing it, Jonas just took over.

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
Amber was having flashbacks to her residency. She was rattling off her patient information. She had to see it as that. Anything else would send her down the panic and worry tunnel. She fought so hard to get out of it after the attack and shooting so many years ago. This event threatened to drag her right back into that spiral. She couldn’t afford it. Sofia and the rest couldn’t afford it.

Amber and the ER Doc went through everything. The X-rays confirmed what Amber already knew. Sofia had a broken femur. At least the break was pretty clean compared to what it could have been.

“OK, doc, let’s get the OR ready. Do you still have an Orthopedic Surgeon? It’s been forever since I dd it but I can help.”

“I have an Ortho Surg Tec but you’re stuck with me as a cutter, I’m afraid.”

“Well, let’s break out the plates and rods. Once we bolt her leg back together, we need to set things up so she can travel. Think in-dwelling instead of external fixation.”

“Sounds like a plan. I’ll get things moving.”

While the ER Doc started the preparations, Amber walked over to where Jonas was standing.

“She going to be OK?”

Amber heard the guarded worry in Jonas’ tone.

“We got her here alive. As long as she keeps fighting, she will pull through. We are taking her up to the OR. The ER doc and I will pin her leg back together.” Amber took a deep breath before she addressed the next part.

“Petra saved her. Without the tourniquet, she would have bled out in the snow. The blood we gave her in-route, it made it possible for us to get her here.”

“You’re going to be in the OR with her?”

“Yeah, I’m helping him do the repair.”

“After you scrub up, take your pistol in with you. I don’t want you to be unarmed.”

Amber thought about what Jonas was saying. She hadn’t considered having her pistol in the OR, but he was making sense.

“Not a problem. Once we roll her in, see if you can get in touch with Ivar or Silas and let him know where we are and what’s going on.”

“Sure thing, boss.”
