Good for planting cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, and other vine crops. Set strawberry plants. First day is a good day for transplanting. First day is also a favorable day for planting beets, carrots, radishes, salsify, turnips, peanuts, and other root crops. Second day is a good day for planting aboveground crops.
  • 3rd – 5th
Cultivate and spray, do general farm work, but no planting.
  • 6th – 7th
Favorable for planting crops bearing yield above the ground.
  • 8th – 10th
Seeds planted now tend to rot in ground.
  • 11th – 12th
Excellent for sowing seedbeds and flower gardens. Best planting days for aboveground crops, especially peas, beans, cucumbers, and squash where climate permits.
  • 13th – 17th
A most barren period, best for killing plant pests or doing chores around the farm.

When I lived in Minnesota, I read that one should start seeds indoors on the Ides of March.

It's starting to get just as bad here in Arkansas. Just can't really coult on the weeeather any more. There's not really such a th ing as a good long range forecast any more...I always try to do things in a way that sudden temp. changes don't cause any unpleasant surprises. Like a cart for seed trays needs to be something with wheels, easily brought inside, not just a big outdoor table with lots of trays on it.

Husband is still working on my raised bed garden (we are dedicating a space and he is mulching and blocking it off. He worked quite a bit today and yesterday. The lettuce I planted outside before the ice storm is doing very well and I planted the other half of my container on the porch this afternoon (lettuce). If all is well Friday we are leaving for a week or it would be nice if came home to enough for a salad again :) I may plant a few radishes before leaving also

Planning to get some early tomatoes. Going to put them in, under row cover about the first of April.
Plants almost three inches now, peppers finally coming up, just peeping above the cups. Thinking i may have put the tomatoes in a little early, but i guess they will be alright.

We started our pepper seeds in January. They are several inches high now. We live in northern Iowa and last year our peppers only just started producing well when it frosted in the fall. So we decided to start them earlier this year.

We started our tomato seeds today.

Do you have a greenhouse or a tunnel cover for your plants?

I work full time and as much as I love the farmer's almanac I have not been able to follow it the way I would like. Today I had the morning off so I got my beans, tomatoes, herbs, some cucumbers and peppers planted. I am prepared with covers for the stray cold snap we tend to have sneak up between now and Easter.

I've tried to focus on variety using organic heirloom as well as hybrid plants, companion planting and raised beds for 90% of my gardens. My figs, onions, strawberries and blueberries were put in ground. I'm starting from scratch so doing the best I can amending clay soil and using alot of cattle panel arched trellises as well as drip irrigation for the first time. As soon as I get the next weekend off I will be doing some more experimenting in the woods behind my property.

My celery is all I’ve started…normally I’d get several more things rolling next week…but, alas, it must wait. Have to drive up to spend a week in North Pole to give my sister a hand during spring break. It’ll be a fun drive, of course - good 6 hours each way, but I shudder at what gas will cost me.

Sooo, I will be very busy upon my return to get all the veg seeds stated that I can. I’ll have them in two grow boxes with lights down in the Science Room, on a baker‘s shelf in my south-facing bedroom, and in the south windows of the kitchen. Plant out date is May 28 :) One long raised bed (already have a quarter of it planted with garlic), plus 20 or so containers.

That’s the veg, there are 40 or so baskets, beds, containers for the flowers and herbs that I need to start too. Someone mentioned a tea garden, I would love to do that this year!

’….more dirt, I need more dirt, stat!’ ;)

We start our seeds in a growing tray with a clear cover on the kitchen counter. We fashioned a grow light out of a fluorescent shop light with one warm bulb and one cool bulb. We put it on a timer that is on for 16 hours a day off for eight. We’ve done it this way for years, and always have good success. On sunny days I move the little plants to a sunny window. When the plants outgrow the starter tray, we transplant them into Styrofoam cups with labels.

Yep, it's March! We often get our coldest temps of the year (NY state) in March, even as daytime temps start climbing. The Blizzard of 1993 was March 13th... we had 30 foot drifts blocking our driveway... we had to climb them to get to the barn to milk!

Now, April should display proper Spring-like weather, or people start getting pissy!

Well, yesterday and today I laid out my new raised bed that I am making. It will be like the other 3 ......4 foot wide X 40 feet long. I am going to plant my potatoes I saved from the ones I grew last year.....red potatoes, Kennebec and Yukon Gold. So I should have plenty of room for all to want to grow!! I am going to plant green beans on each side and grow them on arching cattle panels like I did several years ago.

Am going to start my tomatoes and peppers sweet potatoes and eggplants on Monday (inside the house).

I got my onions from Dixondale Farms this week, so they will go in one of the other beds along with all the early greens....spinach, lettuce, chard and kale..
Most everything else will go in later and be direct seeded. One thing I plan on planting is pumpkins......BIG ONES, cause the goats and chickens love them!!

Sorry if I made this thread go crazy.....I just can't wait!!!

So I went over to the almanac page, don't know why they're still showing February and only half of March, so weird.

It finally updated a couple of days ago! Tomorrow is a good planting day for root and leafy greens so my carrots and potatoes will be going in. Actually the next 4-5 days are good for planting most things. I am still leery of putting in the regular stuff like peppers, tomatoes, squash, etc so I am holding off on those for a bit. My tomatoes have been put into pots until I feel like it is safe for them.

Its snowing and blowing good and hard outside, but I'm inside thinking about the crocus buds that were showing color just yesterday. This snow, too, will just pass, and then there will be a small glory of purple in the grass.

Amen! Thanks for sharing- we just got 6 inches of snow overnight!
However, yesterday i potted up 3 rooted geranium cuttings and started the parsley seedlings, so I am hopeful too.

I would like to plant by the signs but I usually plant when it is dry enough to do so.
We have been getting rain every few days and it has been hard to find the time to get things done--seems like every time I get a day off it rains --it is supposed to rain tomorrow----BUT
today I was off and was able to fit some planting into the schedule
I put 32 tomato plants and 16 pepper plants in the ground and was able to cover the potatoes that sprouted
