Two members of the Los Angeles City Council and a union leader released apology statements Sunday after a report published by the Los Angeles Times included transcribed leaked audio of offensive and racist remarks that were made during a private meeting. A third council member claimed to have no recollection of the conversation.

In the leaked audio, which was summarized by the Times but was originally posted to Reddit and remains readily available on social media, Council President Nury Martinez can be heard making derisive and racist comments about the child of Mike Bonin, the council member representing the 11th District.

Bonin, who is white, has an adopted son who is Black. In the leaked audio, Martinez can be heard describing Bonin’s son as “ese changuito,” or that little monkey, according to the Times. At one point, Martinez also refers to Bonin as a “little bitch.”

The comments were made during a discussion regarding Bonin and his son participating in a Martin Luther King Jr. parade several years ago. Bonin and his son were on a float with other members of the Los Angeles political scene, and Martinez apparently was dissatisfied with the boy’s behavior, saying he nearly tipped the float over. She can also be heard accusing Bonin of raising the child like a “little white kid.”

The meeting, which the Times reports happened last October on Los Angeles County Federation of Labor property, included fellow Councilmembers Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León and Federation President Ron Herrera.
De León at one point accuses Bonin of treating his son like an accessory, comparing him to a designer handbag. He also referred to Bonin as the council’s “fourth Black member,” the Times reports.

The meeting was part of a broader discussion regarding the city’s redistricting, which happens once every 10 years. Those in attendance were critical of the maps drawn up by the districting commission and voiced their frustration over the process.
On Sunday, Martinez released a statement that reads in part:

“In a moment of intense frustration and anger, I let the situation get the best of me and I hold myself accountable for these comments. For that I am sorry.”

The statement continues with Martinez saying she was concerned about the potential negative impact that redistricting might have on “communities of color.” She added that her past work on the council “speaks for itself.”

De León released a statement of his own, in which he voices his regret for participating and at times condoning the remarks.
“There were comments made in the context of this meeting that are wholly inappropriate; and I regret appearing to condone and even contribute to certain insensitive comments made about a colleague and his family in private. I’ve reached out to that colleague personally,” the statement reads. “On that day, I fell short of the expectations we set for our leaders — and I will hold myself to a higher standard.”

In his statement, Herrera apologized for “my failure to stand up to racist and anti-black remarks.”

“There is no justification and no excuse for the vile remarks made in that room. Period. And I didn’t step up to stop them and I will have to bear the burden of that cross moving forward,” the statement says.

The Times reached out to Cedillo for a statement on the leaked audio. Cedillo told the Times that he did not remember the meeting.

Bonin released a statement Sunday afternoon in which he says he and his husband were “appalled, angry and absolutely disgusted” by the comments made toward their son.

“We love our son, a beautiful, joyful child, and our family is hurting today. No child should ever be subjected to such racist, mean and dehumanizing comments, especially from a public official,” Bonin’s statement reads in part. “It hurts that one of our son’s earliest encounters with overt racism comes from some of the most powerful public officials in Los Angeles.”

Bonin has since called on Martinez, de León and Cedillo to resign from the City Council, as did Councilmember Nithya Raman.
Incoming Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, who will replace Cedillo after defeating him in an election earlier this year, called on Martinez to resign and for de León and Cedillo to be removed from committees.

Councilmember Paul Koretz also called on Martinez to resign “for the good of the City.”

Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, who serves as president pro tempore, which is second only to the council president, called for Martinez to step down from her council leadership post.

Mayor Eric Garcetti also weighed in on the controversial leaked audio, saying in a statement:

“The Los Angeles I love is a welcoming and nurturing place. As Mayor, as a father, and as an Angeleno, I am saddened by what I read. There is no place in our city family for attacks on colleagues and their loved ones, and there is no place for racism anywhere in L.A. Everyone in our city deserves to feel safe and treated with equal respect. These words fall short of those values.”

Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmember Kevin de Léon — the former president pro tem of the California State Senate — apologized Sunday for a conversation including racial slurs against the black child of a white colleague.
NBC Los Angeles reported:
Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and Councilman Kevin de León apologized Sunday for an attack on colleague Mike Bonin during a recorded conversation in October 2021 that included racist slurs by Martinez directed at Bonin’s young son.

Martinez also called the child “ese changuito,” Spanish for “that little monkey.”

“Su negrito, like on the side,” Martinez added, using a Spanish term for a Black person that’s considered demeaning by many.
De Léon, who ran for mayor but lost in the primary, did not object to the racial slurs, and mocked Bonin over his son.
In a statement on behalf of his family, Bonin condemned the language used by Martinez and De Léon, and demanded Martinez resign:

“No child should ever be subjected to such racism, mean and dehumanizing comments,” he said of the words used by his fellow Democrats.
Bonin is not running for reelection to a third term; a left-wing “progressive,” he clashed frequently with constituents and with other civic leaders, especially over the issue of homelessness on the west side of the city.

She resigned as president, but not as a member of the City Council, about 30 minutes ago, I doubt this is over. Those offended want her gone completely.

Nury Martinez has stepped down as Los Angeles City Council president amid fallout over being heard making racist remarks in audio leaked over the weekend.

“I take responsibility for what I said and there are no excuses for those comments. I’m so sorry,” Martinez said in a statement. “I sincerely apologize to the people I hurt with my words.”

Public officials from across Los Angeles County on Sunday released statements denouncing the offensive remarks made during a private meeting held last year between three sitting L.A. City Council members and a local union leader.

‘A dark day for our City of Angels’: local leaders sound off on racist remarks in leaked audio
Audio from the meeting was published Sunday in a report by the Los Angeles Times.

In the leaked audio, Martinez can be heard making derisive and racist comments about the child of Mike Bonin, the councilmember representing the 11th District.

Bonin, who is white, has an adopted son who is Black. In the leaked audio, Martinez can be heard describing Bonin’s son as “ese changuito,” or that little monkey, according to the Times.

The meeting also included fellow Councilmembers Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León and Federation President Ron Herrera.

De León at one point accuses Bonin of treating his son like an accessory, comparing him to a designer handbag. He also referred to Bonin as the council’s “fourth Black member,” the newspaper reported.

She indicated she was concerned about the potential negative impact that redistricting might have on “communities of color,” and added that her past work on the council “speaks for itself.”

I’ve reached out to that colleague personally,” the statement read. “On that day, I fell short of the expectations we set for our leaders — and I will hold myself to a higher standard.”

Herrera also apologized for “my failure to stand up to racist and anti-black remarks.”

In December 2019, Martinez, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, became the first Latina elected to the powerful role of council president.

In Monday’s statement announcing her resignation as president, Martinez said she understands her comments “undercut” her goal to empower communities of color.

“Going forward, reconciliation will be my priority. I have already reached out to many of my Black colleagues and other Black leaders to express my regret in order for us to heal,” the statement read. “I ask for forgiveness from my colleagues and from the residents of this city that I love so much. In the end, it is not my apologies that matter most; it will be the actions I take from this day forward. I hope that you will give me the opportunity to make amends.”

It appears Martinez will remain on the 15-member council, the Times reported.

LANGUAGE WARNING!!!

It just gets worse and worse. They shouldn't be given the opportunity to resign, they should be immediately terminated, or whatever the procedure is to immediately remove the lot of them. I'd say that it's unbelievable, but sadly, it's not. These are L.A. City Council leaders.

Council President Martinez on DA Gascón: ‘**** That Guy…He’s with the Blacks.’

This is a developing story. It will be updated as appropriate.

Earlier this month, an anonymous Reddit account posted several shocking audio recordings. The recordings seem to contain the voices of Council President Nury Martinez, Councilmembers Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, and LA Labor Federation President Ron Herrera discussing a wide range of topics of great public interest and being incredibly racist while doing so.

The account and those files have since been deleted. Cedillo, Herrera, Martinez, and de León did not respond to requests for comment.

“**** that guy… he’s with the Blacks”

In the recording, Council President Nury Martinez says of Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón, “**** that guy, he’s with the Blacks.”

“There’s nothing you can do to control him, parece ch****ito.”

RT 00:33

Martinez says of the adopted Black son of Councilmember Mike Bonin: “parece ch****ito” (“looks like a little monkey”).

“This kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner, I’ll bring him right back.”

RT 00:18

Martinez further jokes about wanting to beat the adopted son of Bonin.

“25 Blacks are shouting.”

RT 01:57

Martinez, de León, Cedillo, and Herrera discuss Black political power in Los Angeles and what de León terms “the Wizard of Oz effect.” Martinez says she sees a lot of short, dark people in K-town. Cedillo jokes about the height of Oaxacan Koreans. Martinez says she doesn’t know what “village” they are from, and says “tan feo” in reference to them.

“The one who will support us is Heather Hutt.”

RT 00:30

Herrera tells Martinez, de León, and Cedillo that they must maneuver the appointment of a City Council seat to someone who supports them. After de León rejects his initial suggestion, they seem to agree on Heather Hutt. Following a controversial process, Hutt was appointed the Councilmember for Council District 10 in September of this year.

“You’re saying that’s the one to put in a blender and chop up, right?”

https://knock-la.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/6-blender.mp4?_=6
RT 00:28

Martinez, Cedillo, and de León come to agree on aggressively gerrymandering Councilmember Nithya Raman’s district.

“Go get the airport from his ****ing little brother. That little bitch Bonin.”

https://knock-la.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/6-BITCH-BONIN-1.mp4?_=7
RT 00:30

Martinez suggests that in redistricting, Councilmember Harris-Dawson should take the airport from Bonin’s district. She questions why Bonin thinks he is Black. Then de León says, “his kid is.”

“I get it. He’s a diva. I understand that.”

https://knock-la.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/7-DIVA-1.mp4?_=8
RT 01:31

Cedillo says he’s happy with redistricting map K2.5, and calls speaks of Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell as Martinez’s “guy.” Martinez expresses surprise that Cedillo is not as close with O’Farrell anymore after their “COVID bro-mance,” and calls O’Farrell a “diva.”

“**** that dude” – Martinez on Councilmember Bob Blumenfield.

https://knock-la.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/7-DIVA-1.mp4?_=8
RT 00:45

Ron Hererra tells Cedillo, de León, and Martinez that they are a “little Latino caucus” of their own, and that his only goal is to get the three of them elected. When Herrera says he spoke with CD3 Councilmember Blumenfield, he says he told him he sees all of LA City Council’s seats as Latino. Martinez says “**** that dude” about Blumenfield.

Martinez calls Councilmember Krekorian’s former chief of staff – “The guy with one eyebrow.”

Martinez, Herrera, De León and Cedillo discuss restricting in Councilmember Paul Krekorian’s district. They discuss his former chief of staff, Areen Ibranossian, and Martinez refers to him as “the guy with one eyebrow.” Martinez then asks what his last name is, and Cedillo says, “I bet it ends with an I-A-N.”

Update: After publishing, Councilmember Martinez issued a statement to the LA Times, saying that: “In a moment of intense frustration and anger, I let the situation get the best of me. I hold myself accountable for these comments. For that I am sorry.”

De León provided a statement to the LA Times saying that “he regrets appearing to condone and even contribute to certain insensitive comments made about a colleague and his family in private. I’ve reached out to that person.”

Cedillo told the LA Times that he does not remember the conversation.

Bonin and husband Sean Arian issued a statement calling for the resignations of Herrera, Martinez, and De León, and called the meeting a coordinated effort to weaken Black representation in Los Angeles.

Correction: An earlier version of this story miscaptioned a statement by Council President Nury Martinez due to the quality of the audio. It has been corrected from “callate ch****to” to “parece ch****to.” We apologize for the error.
