It's actually my own creation after trials and errors. I do have it perfected over the past 20 years.

So here it goes:

Ingredients= 1 lb. of dried spit pea, rinsed.
2 stalks of Celery chopped
1 large Carrot diced
1 small yellow Onion sliced
Sea Salt, Pepper, and Minced Garlic

Here we go....
Boil 6 cups of water in a stock pot.
Once at a boil dump your dried split peas in there.
Leave on boil uncovered for 20 minutes. It should be a rapid boil.

After 20 minutes you will need to pour 1 more cup of water in there...
Then you place the heat on medium, covered, for 20 minutes. (This is the perfect time to throw some bacon bits in the batch)!

After 40 minutes you turn the stove top to simmer, AND PUT ONE MORE CUP OF WATER, stir and cover for another 20 minutes.

If you do this recipe and hate it, I will personally eat crow.

This is exactly how I make my split pea soup, I usually don’t add ham though sometimes I do. I like to use smoked salt kinda tastes like you did add ham or bacon :) but yeah this is my soup too

I had a most excellent split pea soup recipe, but it got abandoned in the divorce...he wouldn't let me go back and get the rest of my stuff and it wouldn't all fit in the two vehicles available. Oh well, that's between him and God.

Anyway, I remember I put liquid smoke in it because I can't eat ham. The liquid smoke gives it a richer flavor.

I love split pea soup. Its just about the only soup I have in my pantry, that and tomato bisque. I do have the cream of crap soups that people use to make things tastier though. If I was really industreous I'd make my own so it would be healthier to eat, but at my age I almost don't care.

Actually I prefer to fry up a lb. of bacon to add. This gives off more flavor than ham, IMO. Or a package of bacon bits will do in a pinch. I guess I forgot the most important part of my own recipe. lol.

If you have access to a real butcher shop you may be able to pick up a package of bacon ends. These are the ragged ends on the bacon that are either trimmed before hand or leftover after the nice strips of bacon have been sliced off.

Thank you, thank you. I love split pea soup…it’s my oldest son’s specialty to make when I’m down to visit. We are both adding your version to our files when I see him next month.

I really should see if I can grow that kind of pea this season and dry them for next winter :)

Yes! Buying the end pieces is still bacon! And it's generally less expensive that the strips.
Thanks SM!! Hey, do the veggies go in at the start, somewhere in the middle, or at the end?
I have always thrown the veggies in from the start. The carrots and celery are still very recognizable at the end. Something Iv'e learned recently while creating my own crock pot recipes is that the veggies can take longer to cook than meat. If you have a crock pot, my actual preference is to cook split pea soup on the low setting for 8 hours. The soup somehow comes out better this way.

So what exactly do you do for crock pot split pea soup? Just add in the water, peas, celery, carrots, onion and bacon bits or ham, and then set the pot on Low for 8 hours?

Looks a lot like mine. I do add a bay leaf, a lemon (squeeze the juice and throw both halves in the pot while cooking), and sliced kielbasa sausage about a half hour-45 minutes before it's done so it adds the flavor, but doesn't overcook. The lemon sounded weird to me when someone recommended it, but I tried it and it was awesome! Adds some "brightness" and depth. Thanks SpokaneMan ... now I've got to make some.
