Does anyone know what happened to the author of "Lights Out". His username was Halfast ?(I think) and his real name is David Crawford (I think). He wrote two books and then disappeared. Thanks.

He published Lights Out in 2010 and Collision Course in 2012. As far as I know he hasn't published anything else since then, or at least not under that name.

Here's the 2002-2005, copyrighted 2008 .pdf of Lights Out

Here's a youtube short film (6-ish minutes) based on Lights Out that was made back in 2013

I got the feeling the Mr. Crawford got more attention than he bargained for after his foray into professional publishing and decided to exit stage left and go gray. Whether that is fact or my assumption I really don't know.

Collision Course can be read at archive.org. You electronically "check out" the book for 1 hour at a time and read on the website. You have to be a member of archive.org and it remembers what page you were on like Kindle software. Note, there is no option to save the book, just read it on the site.

IMHO Lights Out was a better book/story if you can get past some of the EMP aspects. Collision Course does have some different scenarios and possibilities worth considering especially if planning to be stealthy bugging out to a retreat.

Lights out was one of the first books I read in the genre, and I still believe it to be very good in character development and story line vs most PAW fiction. Many of the aspects seem very reasonable stretches of current civilization (VS a JDY story where most of the time you have a prepper sitting on a literal pile of military hardware fully prepared for any eventuality... cause that happens in real life all the time...)

2nd only to Kathy's stories of course... we all like a good heroine...

Note: The main characters do get a fiscal head start that seems fantastical near the beginning...But many professionals in the characters age group can pull that much together without much mental wrangling, and it's more of a plot point to introduce a specific community than it is a pot of gold.

The additions are much appreciated. I'd be interested to know if Mr. Crawford wrote anything else. I know he started out at the old Squirrel Hut (y'all know what I mean LOL) but left there when the former owner deleted the fiction area without warning after banning most of us authors. Alot of stories and authors were lost during that ruckus. I'm not even sure if the Wayback Machine could find any of it. Might be worth a look but we are talking 11 years ago now.

Both also available at:

Requires membership (free) but limied to 5 DL (?) per day
A small donation extends time frame & number of DLs. Members can convert to PDF, RTF & other formats; not sure if these are legit copies but full copyright is displayed/embedded in the files, sometime as a watermark, other times as part of doc/pdf/file.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this website. I just found the entire series of Alien Nation books. I have them in paperback but having them in pdf is even better!!! LOL

Now to go looking for other things I'd like to have. When I have time that is.

I have tried to figure how to get my stories from the nut house to edit and post updated stories here. Never could figure out how to efficiently use the way back site. Tried to reregister at the nut house but never could, made some fine friends there and thankfully for facebook we are still connected and have met up a time or two.

I had a couple of short stories that I lost as well. I think the way he deleted the section and then overwrote it pretty much destroyed anything there. The wayback only catches "snaps" of a website. Never could find them, only see where he was trying to make money by selling stuff for more than you could get it other places or selling "his" music or whatever it was he did. I've just let that all go though it hurts if I dig at it. What happened, why, and how is what drives some people away from religion but that's on him, not me. I'm not perfect and I would have accepted whatever rules he came up with but something sure at him over the whole thing. It got back to me that he was trash talking some of the writers but in particular the female ones. Maybe he was going through something at the time. None of my business and it is done and over and I've moved along. TB2K is "home" now even when I take a vacation from the forum.

I was wondering if he was still in here. I recently bought a copy of the book Lights Out, and while I am happy to get to read it again, I am disappointed that the first part was not in the book. The part about the old man looking at his watch and wondering how long before the Americans all kill themselves.
That part explained the entire reason the lights went out. Without it, the story is not complete.

Prologue
The old man looked at his gold Rolex. ‘Any minute now,’ he thought as he smiled to himself. It was all
so ironic. He was killing off his best customers and using the money they paid him to do it. Yes, he was hurt-
ing his business, but he had more money than even his grandchildren could spend in their lifetimes. All of
them, that was, except for his favorite grandson. The infidels had killed him in Afghanistan. Such an idealist,
the young man reminded the rich oilman of himself when he was younger. It was so tragic, the young sheik
was shot from afar by a cowardly sniper from the Great Satan for trying to live up to his convictions. Well
now the United States and her whore allies would pay. The radicals that his grandson had been involved with
would never be able to pull off anything like this. They had had some moments, like with the jetliners in New
York, but they were mostly talk and when they did strike, they struck at symbols. He was action. He had the
means. And, he knew what would hurt them the most. He would kill them all, and the best part was, they
would do all the killing themselves. He would just get the ball rolling.
It had been so easy. Eight nuclear tipped ballistic missiles that the former Soviet Union had reported
as destroyed. And at only five million soon to be worthless dollars apiece, they were quite a bargain. Then,
three million for a Chinese scientist to tweak them for the desired effect. Of course the scientist was smart
enough to demand his payment in gold. But that was no problem; it was pocket change to the billionaire.
The oilman already had the tankers to deliver the payload. He had just modified them so that each one had a
launch tube that would be very difficult to find, even if the idiots who imported his oil bothered to look.
The smile on the old man’s face grew bigger as the second hand swept around the dial. How long, he
wondered, until all of the westerners turned on each other once it was Lights Out?
