Open microphone on the video feed. Reporter talking to fire department PIO ‘off the record’. Says units are pulling back and bomb squads on the scene and more enroute. No on the record comments until they get a better grasp of the situation.

Seeing a heavy smoke plume from base of AT&T building and blackened brickwork. Possibly AT&T building in the background. Showing multiple buildings with their windows blown out even high up.

The bomb squad is now requesting the fire department to put out small fires so that they can investigate what has happened.

Special operations confirmed that they have received information that there could be additional devices in vehicles.

People have been advised to steer clear of vehicles in the downtown area.

The explosion led one building to collapse, and vehicles on the road have reportedly caught on fire.

The blast caused "heavy structural damage" and glass and steel to shatter "everywhere," according to Nashville Fire radio traffic.

People have reportedly been injured, however their wounds are non-life-threatening.

The incident occurred at around 5.40am and heavy black smoke was seen rising from the area, WKRN reported.

"There is an incident involving an explosion. This is an active scene," the Nashville Fire Department said in a statement.

"Metro Nashville Police Department and Nashville Fire Department are on the scene. There are no additional details to provide at this time."

Police officers and members of the fire department were at the scene.

U.S. Nashville Tennessee Explosion
A massive explosion in downtown Nashville caused damage to several buildings and prompted evacuations on Christmas Day.
The Metro Nashville Office of Emergency Management's district chief said a parked RV had exploded near the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Commerce Street early Friday, damaging a number of buildings nearby, according to WKRN reporter Nickelle Smith.
Jason Steen, the editor of website Scoop Nashville, tweeted that one building had collapsed after the blast. He reported on Twitter that firefighters were retreating after the incident and that all personnel were accounted for.
"A structure is on fire downtown - searching for victims ongoing - several people walked out of upper residences on their own. preparing for multi-casualty incident, triage being staged on-site," Steen tweeted. He added that most people appeared to have only sustained minor injuries.

In a later tweet, Steen said the Nashville Fire Department was evacuating two further blocks and advising people to stay away from all vans and trucks on the street due to the "possibility of more explosions."

Now that sounds a bit different. An exploding RV in the middle of Nashville on Christmas morning? Hate to say it but that sounds like a VBIED-vehicle borne improvised explosive device. Good God let the people injured survive.

Another downer type thought-if there's one VBIED in one town, there may be others in other towns.

I wish I could counter your logic, Alpha, but that's the read one has to work with, at least initially, I'd think : (

Then again, why obscure streets on a day of elevated Church attendance, and so much shopping congestion...?

Because (and correct me if I'm wrong) there's lots of high end apartments and townhouses in that area. It's Christmas morning, people are either up with their kids opening presents or sleeping in late. Their intent must have been to drop one of those high rise apartment buildings; it appears they might have succeeded.

Any possible significance to the exact location of vehicle? Not familiar with the area.

Native here, can't think of anything. It's a tourist area but if you wanted to make a statement I can't see detonating something there at 7 am Xmas morning during a pandemic. Nobody except neighborhood residents there then. 0_o

And probably not the ideal spot to setup a meth lab, as people have suggested. Propane tanks would be something to look for. Crazy and scary, hope all are safe.

Is that area sort of ritzy? It looks like theres a lot of condos and town homes if I’m seeing it correctly.

My experiences are a bit dated. Downtown near the river but rebuilt / revitalized over the years. I believe that the explosion was a half block from Wild Horse Saloon, a country music bar / restaurant (that maybe originated a TV show in the early 2000s?). Also a block away from a Hard Rock Cafe.

They are saying, "just an RV, nothing to worry about."

This suggests a propane bottle blew. Well, they don't blow up on their own. You can shoot a propane bottle and will just vent gas unless there is an ignition source. The other suggestion is that the vehicle filled with propane and then ignited. That would cause an explosion, but in my opinion nothing like they are saying happened.

I guess if we had our Maff Brains engaged, we could run the #s and see if there's any way possible an RV tank could put concrete and steel debris two blocks either direction of point of explosion... :: shrug :: I'm going to guess "NO" is the answer, though.

Random gun fight or meth lab are still possibly in play perhaps...though again, do you get a debris field that large with either of those??

Explosion rocks downtown Nashville

NASHVILLE — An explosion linked to a vehicle rocked downtown Nashville on Christmas morning, sending shattered glass and debris over a wide area and rocking nearby buildings.
The Metro Nashville Police Department said via Twitter that the explosion occurred at 6:30 a.m. Friday and that state and federal authorities were on the scene, as were emergency crews including the fire department.

Black smoke and flames were seen early Friday billowing from the area, which is packed with bars, restaurants and other retail establishments and is known as the heart of downtown Nashville's tourist scene.
Buildings shook in the immediate area and beyond after a loud boom was heard.
The Metro Nashville Office of Emergency Management told Nashville television station WKRN that a parked recreational vehicle exploded and damaged several buildings. No injuries were immediately reported. The station also quoted officials as saying the explosion did not seem suspicious. The fire department sent out a tweet asking residents and others to avoid the area.
Buck McCoy, who lives near the area, posted videos on Facebook that show water pouring down the ceiling of his home. Alarms blare in the background and cries of people in great distress ring in the background. A fire is visible in the street outside. McCoy said the windows of his home were entirely blown out.
"All my windows, every single one of them got blown into the next room. If I had been standing there it would have been horrible," he said.
"It felt like a bomb. It was that big," he told The Associated Press.
"There were about four cars on fire. I don't know if it was so hot they just caught on fire, and the trees were all blown apart," he said.

check out close vid..and they said "was intentional" at the end of loop..

**OH..it's live..sorry

The concussion blew out windows on opposite side of the buildings..

Pretty telling of the density/capacity of material that detonated.

I dunno. Lets assume whomever had the maff skills to calculate damage formulas and the basic intelligence to scout his location and know it's victim load, time of occupancy etc...

Who wants to yank chains and create trouble, but not really hurt too many, if any, people???

That could be the target for an informed terrorist?

Critical infrastructure. Cut a cable or fiber, hours to repair. Destroy a switch, who knows how long things would be disrupted.

Not an effective delivery method to really damage it tho.
