I haven't paid much attention this year, will be flipping on the TV shortly.
Here's a decent overview article. Looks to me like way too big a field. Could be anybody's race and a traffic nightmare.

2023 Kentucky Derby horses, futures, odds, date

The 2023 Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be a highly contested race that could see a variety of different outcomes. After five scratches this week, 18 horses will make up the Kentucky Derby 2023 field, and six horses are listed at 13-1 or lower in the 2023 Kentucky Derby odds after morning-line favorite Forte scratched on Saturday. Tapit Trice and Angel of Empire are the co-favorites at 9-2. Derma Sotogake and Two Phil's are next at 7-1, followed by Kingsbarns (9-1) and Reincarnate at 13-1.

The 2023 Kentucky Derby post time is 6:57 p.m. ET. Should your 2023 Kentucky Derby bets include one of the top favorites, or should you back a double-digit longshot like Mandarin Hero (21-1), Rocket Can (27-1) or Jace's Road (32-1)?

A fixture in the horse racing world who has been writing about, talking about and betting on races for years, Demling enters the 2023 Kentucky Derby having nailed the winner of the Belmont Stakes four of the last fives years, including an exacta in 2022 with Mo Donegal and Nest. He also nailed Flightline's win at the Breeders' Cup Classic last November.

Demling is at his best in the biggest horse races in the world like the Kentucky Derby 2023. In fact, he has hit 10 of the last 14 Derby-Oaks doubles at Churchill Downs. That means he held a ticket with the winners of both races all but four times in the last 14 years. He's also called nine of the last 18 Preakness winners, keenly understanding when the Kentucky Derby winner was poised for victory or a massive upset, and nailed the 2022 Preakness trifecta. Anyone who has followed him is up huge.

Now, with the 2023 Kentucky Derby futures already on the board, Demling is sharing his picks and predictions over at SportsLine.

Top 2023 Kentucky Derby predictions

One of Demling's surprising 2023 Kentucky Derby picks: He is fading Tapit Trice, even though he's one of the co-favorites in the Kentucky Derby 2023 odds. Tapit Trice has yet to lose a race in 2023, securing four straight first-place finishes.

Tapit Trice is widely known for his closing speed, however, which usually doesn't translate well in such a large field. He waited until the far turn and stretch to blow past his rivals at the Tampa Bay Derby, but he may not have the opportunity to do so at Churchill Downs if he gets knocked off his line early in the race. "[Tapit Trice] won the Tampa Bay Derby and Blue Grass Stakes in his last two starts. Still needs to show some improvement -- especially mentally -- in my mind to face an 18-horse field," Demling told SportsLine. Demling has Tapit Trice well outside his top five. See which other 2023 Kentucky Derby horses to avoid at SportsLine.

Another stunner: Demling is high on Derma Sotogake at 7-1. He's a target for anyone looking for a big payday. Based in Japan, his winning time at the UAE Derby raised eyebrows, as it was the second-fastest time in the 14 years the race has been held at its current distance.

With jockey Christophe Lemaire also riding a Japanese starter in last year's Kentucky Derby, Derma Sotogake may have enough experience around him to surprise on Saturday..

Has No Life - Lives on TB
I’m betting on Tapit Trice, Disarm and Mage. Really funky Kentucky Derby this year.

"My Old Kentucky Home" was played.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - From the moment the band strikes up the first hymn-like notes, the song “My Old Kentucky Home” has been known to drive some to sentimental tears and others to vocal protest.

“We give careful considerations to all of our traditions year after year,” Tonya Abeln, Churchill Downs VP of Corporate Communications said. “And this one in particular we’ve engaged in really meaningful conversations with the community and with our fans. And with that said, it’s the state song of Kentucky and we’ll be singing it before this year’s Kentucky Derby.”

Abeln said it was not a difficult decision.

“It is the state song of Kentucky. To our knowledge there isn’t any larger discussion about that changing. If that were to happen, we’d certainly respond to that,” she said.

That's NOT going to change.

I do notice though that these days, they don't run the lyrics for sing-a-long at the bottom of the screen...
or have a televised chorus or soloist.
