HEALTH How to cut your fingernails with WEAK HANDS and fingers.

ainitfunny

Saved, to glorify God.
If your hands and fingers are too weak to cut your fingernails you may need to do it a different way.

Buy a pair of TOENAIL CLIPPERS to cut fingernails, and if using them conventionally with your thumb on the lever, still requires more strength than you have, THEN TURN THE TOENAIL CLIPPERS UPSIDE DOWN SO YOU ARE USING 4 FINGERS INSTEAD OF ONE THUMB.

AND if you still have difficulty, then put your hand with the clipper on a table OR KNEE, with the fingers Down on the lever, and lever down ON THE TABLE OR KNEE, and push the clipper closed with you ARM.
If someone could draw this and add a photo for our members who need it, i would sure appreciate it.

I had to figure this out because Rheumatoid arthritis made my hands too weak to cut my fingernails.

Toenail clippers have a hole in the end. I use half of a clothespin and a small screw to extend the length then on the top lever part I slip a piece of foam tubing I got in rehab. The larger toenail clippers with the extra lengths on top and bottom enable me to clip my fingernails with my weak hand.

I was going to ask about toenails, because with my knees shot, I can't bend and get the angle to get some of the toes. Pet nail grinders? I think I may have one here, if I didn't donate it. (DH forbade me to use it on our dog.)

I haven’t been able to do nail clippers for a few years now. But I can use an Emory board just fine so I simply keep them filed and shaped and short enough using the Emory boards. I use the large ones and keep a pack in my office desk drawer, my nightstand drawer and the storage compartment in the arm of my side of the sofa. I am on a lot of non-live video conference calls so that is a great time and an easy thing to do keep them tidy.

Nail file.
I didn't realize adults ever used clippers on their fingernails. Especially ladies.
You let them get that far away from ya? Ewwww.....

Of course...guitar player here. Musicians (label of which I don't qualify) do tend to obsess over their nails. Haha..also, women gardeners, health care types or lab rats.

No criticism implied or directed at any poster here, but is being too weak to cut your own fingernails a thing? I've just never heard of that before, and frankly, it's kind of scary to think about.

Most civilized people do have nail clippers as one of their good grooming tools. Seriously, Ewwww? Seriously Ewwww to you that you don't.

I use a nail clipper that is much like a pair of side-cutter pliers/dykes, only chrome. Found it in the "implement" section of the supermarket. Look like these: https://www.grainger.com/product/52...VZhmtBh3jwQQjEAQYBiABEgJAWPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I've used my old horseshoer nippers (hoof trimmer) and Dremel tool as well.

I completely gave up on my feet and get pedicures. I simply was always fighting to get into the right position and would get angry.

I hear more about people having trouble reaching their feet, but -- yes -- there are various conditions that can destroy hand strength. I'm blessed to still be able to use these, but I know that others can't. These are hand exercisers to improve grip strength. I'm back to being able to open a jar of pickles, again.

My nails grow fast! I have to clip them each week, and yes, I keep them very short because I'm in the garden and I play piano and type.

You have been blessed to NOT have severe arthritis. I have to use special tools to open AND close (tightly) common, everyday things like any and all bottles, jars, cans, even double zip plastic bags and resealable bags of all kinds. Can’t get them open and then struggle to get them closed.

Losing your grip truly sucks.

I truly have been blessed, and I do not take it for granted, I thank the Lord daily for good health.

I find it impossible to cut the nails on my right hand with my left using nail / cuticle scissors. (Right-handed) So I’ve switched to using toenail clippers.

I also have hand tremors and the clippers are easier for that.

I have really cut back on going to the nail salon due to the cost.

Thanks for the ideas in this thread.

Ever since seeing this thread this morning, I have been wondering how our ancestors did it. Must have been awful. Seems to me I saw my dad paring his with a knife one time. And I can imagine they used files or even stones. I think clippers were the first thing I put into a bug-out bag.
