I have recently purchased some elderberries and Turmeric for the Bird flu, and was wondering the proper way to make a tincture?

this is what i do::

take a clean glass jar (sterile)
fill 1/3 of jar(s) with dried elderberries
fill with vodka-80 proof
let soak in then top off to about 1 inch above the berry line
put lid one
shake 1 or 2 times a day
let soak for 15 to 30 days (i prefer 30 days)

after the seaoking is done, strain into cheesecloth lined colander and let drip
squeeze out the last bit
put into sterile jar (i use the same vodka bottle)
lable and date

keep out of the light--i set my in closet on floor

Google is your friend, but in short you take at least 80 proof vodka (Has to be clear alcohol) and even stronger is better. Use everclear if you can find it. Use a pound of the dried elderberries at a time and put them in a gallon size glass jar. Cover the elderberries with the vodka and fill to one inch above the berries. You may need to add more vodka in the first 3 days or so as the berries swell and absorb the vodka.

Set it in a shady area and give it a good shake or stir a few times a day. Do this every day for at least 14 days. It's best to leave it for a month but 14 days is adequet. At the end of 14 days use a metal collander with cheesecloth and pour the elderberry/vodka mixture into the collander and let it drain. After it has drained start to wring out the cheesecloth getting as much out as possible.

At that point store in dark bottles. It will keep for years. This mixture will leave the mother of all stains if you spill it and I wear latex gloves on the hands when wringing it out. You can add other herbs to the same mix if you want.

Yep, we use pure white lighting to render herbs. I get my food grade pure grain alcohol in Montana when I go through. If the herbs don't cure ya the tincture will...
