Horrible Crick in Neck!

Woke up Sunday morning with the worst crick in my neck I have ever had. Left arm was sore and felt like it was out of joint! It has gotten a little better every day. Maybe today it will be a lot better. Shoulder pain was intense. What on earth did I do in my sleep to cause this horrible pain? Looking down is painful. Have been using heating pad.

Aye! So do ye repent?

Seriously, I had something lovely like this not long ago - shoulder problems. I wanted surgery it was so bad, but nurse friend told me to get Alleve and take it every (whatever it says on the bottle) for four days to get rid of the inflammation before I went to the doc. Make sure you keep the levels as steady as you can in the blood stream. It worked. I still have problems, but it became obvious that the doc was way radical. I have come to the conclusion that my pillows are way too high and that's causing most of the problem. Also the way I sit in my chair all day at work (put one leg under me). Hope the addition of Alleve to the equation helps. It's a great anti-inflammatory. Much better than ibuprofen to me. IF YOU TAKE IT BE SURE YOU EAT PRIOR TO TAKING IT OR IT WILL MAKE YOUR STOMACH DO NASTY THINGS TO YOU! DO NOT MAKE AN EXCEPTION.

LOL, Is a crick supposed to mean that you need to repent? Haven't heard that one! I have to think back if I have slipped up! Saying a prayer just in case!
I am starting on the alleve this morning (after breakfast!). Thanks!

Certainly! Just ask Fr. Mike. He'll tell you the same thing. (kidding of course)

I hope this works for you. Be sure to get back on the heating pad as much as possible and use wet heat if you have it. Another thing you can do is take a bath cloth MAKING SURE IT HAS A TAG - wet it, put it on a microwavable plate with tag sticking up and nuke it for a minute. You will have an extremely hot cloth then, so pick it up by the tag and swing it around a bit to cool it some - not too much and then put that on your neck. CAREFULLY. You'll figure out how much to nuke and how much to wave if you'll do it a few times, but it will burn you if you're not careful. I only add this as the heating pad is always so hard to get to the right place on your neck. Do not set your house on fire; do not burn yourself. I think that if you can keep the Alleve in your system it will do you the most good. However, this will FEEL good if you have the time. Rice in a sock is good too, but it doesn't have the moist heat. But if you have to go to work, you can take this (rice sock) and still get some bennies. I don't think "minute rice" and it's friends work (no moisture in the grains) but "real" rice does and it feels ever so nice! Good luck!

Beetree, please DO watch out on that Aleve! It WILL rot your guts out if not taken with plenty of food. Got a horrible case of gastritis from it. Wouldn't touch the stuff again.
BTW ~ Pillows should be as thick as the distance from head of shoulder to side of neck. If side sleeper~ Firm pillow !

Beetree,

Do be carefull with the Aleve. Make sure you take it with plenty of water to wash it down into a full stomach. If Aleve "sticks" before it reaches the stomach, it can burn your esophagus.

TOP or joint where the arm and shoulder meet - makes a triangle between head, side base of rhe neck out to the top of the shoulder then diagonal from shoulder top back to head. Make sense??

I give up.
That happened to me years ago. It was a desk height problem at work, as it turns out. Had to have the maintenance department put 2" blocks under each leg of the desk to raise it up. I'm kind of tall, 5' 7" and this did help. Also, the advice was recommended by the massage therapist I had to go to. She was wonderful!!! She knew just how to manipulate the shoulders and neck so that I got immediate relief. Had to go to her once a week for two months, if I remember correctly. But never had the problem again.

For that sort of thing, the heat therapy and anti-inflammitories are good, but that is really just masking the underlying cause. You have a nerve pinch in your upper spinal cord. You really need to see a good chiropracter.

I had a similar thing last spring, to the point where i couldn't turn my head from side to side and my left arm went all numb/tingly. After fooling around fro a month thinking it would go away, I found a good chiropractor who got things put back in order--FWIW he had me put ice packs on the back of my neck, not heat, and stick with the ibuprofen.

FWIW, both my chiropractor and my dd the massage therapist say to do 20 min on and 20 min off with the ice or you can alternate heat and ice in 20 min segments. On a fresh "injury" use ice only for the 1st 2 days before going with the heat.

And Beetree I hope you are feeling much better by now and have been to a chiropractor.

I am all better now thanks. It was very strange to just wake up with something so debilitating. What on earth happened during the night! The suggestions worked well!
