How about Bryson or west of Bryson?

Also is the Black Mountain area too close?

Or the north cooridor Morganton to Boone?
Black Mountain is in Buncombe County, west of Bryson is ok but no close major hospitals, Morganton to Boone is fine. But Boone has Appalachian State University and full of liberals.

On a almost totally unrelated topic I was watchinguseless tubes video’s on ‘best’ cities and towns in different states.

Seems they kept recommending cities and I had a hard time figuring why high crime hi tax locations would be recommended over small towns, unless you only cared about how many bars you can hit in one night.

Then I caught it. Very quickly while rattlimg through the highlights they snuck in the word. Seems a Very Big consideration for what makes a city a good place to raise a family is not the numbers of rapes or murders or the amount you shovel out for stupid government programs to save the endangered disease carrying rat, it’s the amount of DIVERSITY.

I really don’t care about the racial make-up of my neighbors, but I do care the percentage of neighbors and local pols that feel entitled to My Stuff...

Back to main topic.
Kind of have 4 area’s

1.) Not Asheville, but circle area about 5 miles out around Asheville moving out.
2.) The I-40 corridor that runs between Asheville to outer rim Winston Salem.
3.) The North space between I-40 around Hickory north to border.
4.) Next door to Dennis, that way I got someone to mow my lawn and get free bread and pizza whenever I desire..,
"free bread and pizza", tell me more

I like it here in far NW NC (Ashe Co). NE TN to the west likely worth investigating too. Don't know if VA is recoverable.

Ashe County, North Carolina detailed profile - houses, real estate, cost of living, wages, work, agriculture, ancestries, and more and their forum might help - Western North Carolina Forum - The Mountain Region including Asheville - City-Data Forum

If GSM shows up, it will get colder up here.

Lots of 'summer houses' up here. Don't buy one! Not suited for winter access. It's not that bad weatherwise but if the driveway is pitched like a ski slope .... ice is ice.

I'll hitch hike a bit . . . I agree completely with what Doz has said. NC state income taxes could be a concern for some. I'd strongly recommend the NE corner of TN above 81 . . . I'm on the Madison Haywood cty line near the TN/NC line. if I left here I'd look at the area of TN we've both mentioned to you. DO be aware that the TRASH from ASSville has a way of creeping outward . . . lately it seems to favor migrating to the N and W - Canton, Waynesville, Maggie, Sylva, Dillsborough and Bryson City are clearly more vibrant than they were 25 yrs ago.

I live in Henderson county around a half hour south of Asheville. It’s beautiful country but it has gotten pricey in the last few years. There is a reason that it’s expensive. And I friggin love it here. It’s some of the best weather ever, one ok snowfall per year the last 8 years and I’m in sweats and hoodie in July and no AC. Butt loads of outside activities. Used to visit Asheville occasionally, but haven’t been since the silliness started.
Part of the moving to a new area is being accepted.
And because it’s a purple area, with tourists, it’s open minded to all hard working people. Not sure if that’s a positive or not.
Tons of work, regardless of your field.
And 5 hours to the ocean, myrtle beach area...... sorry...

And I’m not trying to sell anything here, but in a bunch of years traveling, this is where I want planted.
And I would gladly meet for a cup of coffee in downtown Hendersonville with any TB2k folks and share what knowledge I have.

My treat....
Quick question.

According to useless tube guy Nick Johnson Hendersonville has higher than normal crime. Do you think this is an issue at all, or is it localized mainly in the town?

Thanks for any info.

Born and raised in NC, and have lived here all my life outside of my time in the military.

NC is a purple state. We lapse back and forth from Red to Blue in elections. It's my belief that the trend is toward Blue to to in-migration from various Blue states.

All metro areas and mid-size cities are Blue. All suffer from the general problems that brings, but none are as bad as places like Detroit. Some are working on it, though. Many smaller towns are also blue, so investigate the area throughly before you decide on moving there.

The mountains are wonderful, if you can stand the price. Real estate is going up, driven by well-off retirees from out of state and city types with money who want a weekend place. Stay above 3000' and you'll avoid most of the heat and humidity.

Myself, I would look at east Tennessee. No income tax, more reasonable real estate prices, and a lot fewer people. As far as I know no big city problem areas. I'd move, but that's been vetoed by my wife.

Tennessee is suffering from the same issues you describe. Real estate is going nuts. Only problem with eastern Tennessee is it is at the foot hills of the Appalachias and as such, snow and ice basically means you stay home and expect to have no power and water depending upon how remote you are, and remote is the only way to find affordable property...

You might look at eastern part of KY. Cheapest land and housing found anywhere and the lightest area in the east. Laid back , quiet, low taxes, no tax on food and 6 % sales tax on everything else. People will actually go out of there way to help a stranger, very little crime. No liberals and this is gun country.
