EUROPE FORECAST A BITTERLY COLD AND SNOWY CHRISTMAS, VIRUS LEAK, + WASHINGTON POST (& GOOGLE) ATTACKS ELECTROVERSE…?
DECEMBER 16, 2021 CAP ALLON

Today’s article will be a short one. I’m having to ‘fight fires’ after waking to this email purportedly from the WP:
“I’m a reporter with the Washington Post, and I’m working on a piece about new research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate. They found 50 ads that appeared to be violating Google’s misinformation policy, which says the company won’t run ads on content that contradicts the scientific consensus on climate change’s existence. It includes several examples from electroverse, including one post that claimed there are no credible scientists warning of a ‘climate emergency’ — not a single one. The company responded by saying it would cease advertising with electroverse. Do you have a comment?”

I’m not entirely sure what they’re even saying: The Center for Countering Digital Hate found examples of electroverse articles within ads …? I doubt it. But the email does seem genuine, so I’d best give it some time. So far I have this: “It should not be considered a ‘violation’ to disagree with a scientific theory, not least one with as many holes as AGW.” Bazinga!

I can’t spend too much time on my comment, though, as I have an intense 24+hour Monopoly game to finish with my three young kids. Serving as a little background, myself and my wife took them out of mainstream education a few years back, something I advise all parents do. Homeschooling is hard at times, for a multitude of different reasons, but it is entirely necessary–we aren’t raising sheep.

EUROPE FORECAST A BITTERLY COLD AND SNOWY CHRISTMAS

Latest weather models have doubled-down on Europe, including the UK, facing a cold and snowy Christmas this year.

The anomalously cold conditions which have prevailed since mid-November will linger into the late-December; in fact, they look set to intensify as the month progresses:

GFS 2m Temperature Anomaly (C) Dec 20 – Dec 29 [tropicaltidbits.com].

As suggested, this Arctic outbreak will also deliver healthy dumpings of snow to much of the continent:

1639662218140.png
GFS Total Snowfall (cm) Dec 20 – Jan 1 [tropicaltidbits.com].

As I’ve reported to death in recent weeks, Europe is currently facing a serious energy shortage, which is due to 1) the depletion of stocks during last year’s historically cold and long winter, and 2) a reckless reliance on failing renewables.

According to a recent note from EnergyScan: Europe’s power spot prices are soaring, “lifted by forecasts of higher demand [as well as] weak wind and solar generation.”

The very last thing the continent needs is an increase in heating demand due to cold weather, but that’s exactly what it’s getting as the sun slips into its next Grand Solar Minimum cycle. Saying that though, this energy issue, like so many of today’s problems (see below), is largely self-inflicted — man appears hellbent on shooting himself in the foot, over and over again. Or is that the part of the plan? Is this a key component of the Great Reset?

Just yesterday (Dec 15), British MPs were told by Dr Alina Chan, a specialist in gene therapy and cell engineering at MIT and Harvard, that COVID-19 “most likely” came from the Wuhan lab, and that the virus may have been “genetically engineered”.

Dr Chan told the Science and Technology Select Committee: “I think the lab origin is more likely than not.

“Right now it’s not safe for people who know about the origin of the pandemic to come forward.

“But we live in an era where there is so much information being stored that it will eventually come out.”

Dr Chan also warned that the virus was likely engineered by scientists: “We have heard from many top virologists that a genetically engineered origin is reasonable and that includes virologists who made modifications to the first Sars virus.

“We know this virus has a unique feature, called the furin cleavage site, and without this feature, there is no way this would be causing this pandemic.

“A proposal was leaked showing that EcoHealth and the Wuhan Institute of Virology were developing a pipeline for inserting novel furin cleavage sites.

“So, you find these scientists who said in early 2018 ‘I’m going to put horns on horses’ and at the end of 2019 a unicorn turns up in Wuhan city.”

The truth always prevails… eventually — next up, vaccine side effects, including deaths.

Follow the silence:

Little Ice Age triggered by unusually warm period, unprecedented cold struck within 20 years

New research from the University of Massachusetts Amherst provides a novel answer to one of the persistent questions in historical climatology, environmental history and the earth sciences: what caused the Little Ice Age? The answer, we now know, is a paradox: warming.

The Little Ice Age was one of the coldest periods of the past 10,000 years, a period of cooling that was particularly pronounced in the North Atlantic region. This cold spell, whose precise timeline scholars debate, but which seems to have set in around 600 years ago, was responsible for crop failures, famines and pandemics throughout Europe, resulting in misery and death for millions. To date, the mechanisms that led to this harsh climate state have remained inconclusive. However, a new paper published recently in Science Advances gives an up-to-date picture of the events that brought about the Little Ice Age. Surprisingly, the cooling appears to have been triggered by an unusually warm episode.

When lead author Francois Lapointe, postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in geosciences at UMass Amherst and Raymond Bradley, distinguished professor in geosciences at UMass Amherst began carefully examining their 3,000-year reconstruction of North Atlantic sea surface temperatures, results of which were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2020, they noticed something surprising: a sudden change from very warm conditions in the late 1300s to unprecedented cold conditions in the early 1400s, only 20 years later.

Using many detailed marine records, Lapointe and Bradley discovered that there was an abnormally strong northward transfer of warm water in the late 1300s which peaked around 1380. As a result, the waters south of Greenland and the Nordic Seas became much warmer than usual. "No one has recognized this before," notes Lapointe.

Normally, there is always a transfer of warm water from the tropics to the arctic. It's a well-known process called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which is like a planetary conveyor belt. Typically, warm water from the tropics flows north along the coast of Northern Europe, and when it reaches higher latitudes and meets colder arctic waters, it loses heat and becomes denser, causing the water to sink at the bottom of the ocean. This deep-water formation then flows south along the coast of North America and continues on to circulate around the world.

But in the late 1300s, AMOC strengthened significantly, which meant that far more warm water than usual was moving north, which in turn cause rapid arctic ice loss. Over the course of a few decades in the late 1300s and 1400s, vast amounts of ice were flushed out into the North Atlantic, which not only cooled the North Atlantic waters, but also diluted their saltiness, ultimately causing AMOC to collapse. It is this collapse that then triggered a substantial cooling.

Fast-forward to our own time: between the 1960s and 1980s, we have also seen a rapid strengthening of AMOC, which has been linked with persistently high pressure in the atmosphere over Greenland. Lapointe and Bradley think the same atmospheric situation occurred just prior to the Little Ice Age — but what could have set off that persistent high-pressure event in the 1380s?

The answer, Lapointe discovered, is to be found in trees. Once the researchers compared their findings to a new record of solar activity revealed by radiocarbon isotopes preserved in tree rings, they discovered that unusually high solar activity was recorded in the late 1300s. Such solar activity tends to lead to high atmospheric pressure over Greenland.

At the same time, fewer volcanic eruptions were happening on earth, which means that there was less ash in the air. A "cleaner" atmosphere meant that the planet was more responsive to changes in solar output. "Hence the effect of high solar activity on the atmospheric circulation in the North-Atlantic was particularly strong," said Lapointe.

Comment: The claim that fewer volcanic eruptions and that the air was "cleaner" is up for debate.

Lapointe and Bradley have been wondering whether such an abrupt cooling event could happen again in our age of global climate change. They note that there is now much less arctic sea ice due to global warming, so an event like that in the early 1400s, involving sea ice transport, is unlikely.

Comment: At least one factor causing Arctic sea ice melt seems to be due to heat coming from below, in the form of under sea volcanic activity, however, in the last few years, ice formation overall has rebounded to such an extent, and with such a speed, that an unprecedented 20 shipping vessels recently got stuck in the Siberia sea, with operators commenting that ice extent surpasses the 1981- 2010 ice edge median, and as such, took them by surprise.

Further, as early as 2017, Arctic and Antarctic sea ice had already begun to grow at a record rate, the trend was documented to have continued through 2019, and into 2021. The formation and retention of this ice is likely accelerated by the record low temperatures and record high snowfall in the polar regions.

"However, we do have to keep an eye on the build-up of freshwater in the Beaufort Sea (north of Alaska) which has increased by 40% in the past two decades. Its export to the subpolar North Atlantic could have a strong impact on oceanic circulation", said Lapointe. "Also, persistent periods of high pressure over Greenland in summer have been much more frequent over the past decade and are linked with record-breaking ice melt.

Comment: It may be that Greenland had been warmer than usual over the past decade, and the would actually match the pattern being referred to in the study, as do the more recent data showing show that just two years ago Greenland recorded some of its coldest temperatures in 1000 years.

Climate models do not capture these events reliably and so we may be underestimating future ice loss from the ice sheet, with more freshwater entering the North Atlantic, potentially leading to a weakening or collapse of the AMOC." The authors conclude that there is an urgent need to address these uncertainties.
More information: Francois Lapointe, Little Ice Age abruptly triggered by intrusion of Atlantic waters into the Nordic Seas, Science Advances (2021). DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.abi8230. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abi8230
Journal information: Science Advances , Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Comment: Forecasts based on solar activity, coupled with measurements on earth, show that it is looking increasingly likely that our planet is moving quickly towards yet another ice age; so much so, that even scientists funded to push the global warming agenda are unable to deny the occurrence, and likely increase, of extreme 'cold snaps' in our future:

U.S. records most hurricane-force gusts in a single day
by Reuters
Thursday, 16 December 2021 11:22 GMT

Dec 16 (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday registered the highest number of hurricane-force gusts on record in a single day, the National Weather Service (NWS) said, days after one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in U.S. history.

More than 55 gusts of above 75mph (121kph) were recorded across a number of mostly Midwestern states, the NWS Storm Prediction Center said in a tweet, citing data up to 10:00 p.m. Central Time. The Center also registered 19 tornadoes.

Previously, in data going back to 2004, the most hurricane-force gusts in a single day was 53 on August 10, 2020, it said.

Wednesday's severe weather caused multiple power outages and disruption at Kansas City International Airport, and triggered reports of wildfires.

Seventy-four people died in Kentucky and 14 in nearby states after a tornado-riddled storm system swept through the region on Friday.

The below article is somewhat political in nature regarding the GSM, but there are legitimate concerns. Electroverse is one of the best sources for GSM material at the present time. If we lose Electroverse, we'll lose valuable GSM information going forward. Kind of makes one wonder what is headed our way GSM-wise if there is such a heavy hand trying to block information:

‘THE CENTER FOR COUNTERING DIGITAL HATE’ SUCCESSFULLY STRIPS ELECTROVERSE OF ITS ADVERTISING
DECEMBER 17, 2021 CAP ALLON

They could not have chosen a more Orwellian name: ‘The Center for Countering Digital Hate’. This is the body, founded in 2018, that has the power to strip truth-seeking websites such as Electroverse of their advertisement.

“The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) is a global non-profit organisation with offices in London and Washington, DC. It campaigns for big tech firms to stop providing services to individuals who may promote hate and misinformation, including neo-Nazis and anti-vaccine advocates.”

George Orwell’s 1984 is no longer an imagined, often romanticized, dystopic future where a global tyrannical power controls the masses with surveillance and propaganda, it is today’s bleak reality, and one we’re all suffering in (whether we see it or not).

The Center for Countering Digital Hate was setup, for the most part, to silence “anti-vaxxers”, and in that regard, the timing of its inception (2018) could be looked upon as suspicious. But the body also works to de-platform neo-Nazis and “climate deniers”–to even mention these in the same breath gives a sense of the instability and disconnect from reality going on here.

The CCDH wants to take down “The Toxic Ten” — 10 fringe publishers which it says “fuel 69% of digital climate change denial”.

According to a recent article on counterhate.com, the CCDH’s official website: “Google promised to stop monetizing climate denial content through its Google Ads business, starting 9 Nov 2021” … “But new research (by the CCDH) shows that Google Ads are still running on 50 new climate denial articles. All were published after 8 Nov 2021 and are from 14 different publishers.”

View: https://twitter.com/CCDHate/status/1471567052049690634

The CCDH continue: “In the run up to COP26 the Center for Countering Digital Hate published its Toxic Ten report that showed social media posts linking to articles from just 10 ‘super polluter’ publishers account for up to 69% of Facebook interactions with climate denial content. The examples collected include articles from 5 publishers that are part of these ‘Toxic Ten’.”

The CCDH then go on to list a handful of articles “still carrying ads”:

* A Breitbart article claiming Global Warming is not real and “a hoax”
* A Breitbart article that called COP26 “a gigantic eco-fascist gaslighting operation” and claimed that “groundless” environmental scare stories are being used to “terrify us into submission”
* An Electroverse article claiming “there are no credible scientists warning of a ‘climate emergency’ — not a single one.”
* A Western Journal article claiming “Whether the climate is changing — and whether it is caused by man — are questions not answered definitively.”
* Numerous articles attacking climate science as “alarmism”

“The Toxic Ten’s websites have received nearly 1.1 billion visits in the last six months prior to COP26,” bemoans the CCDH, “earning those that are part of Google’s AdSense platform an estimated $3.6 million in revenue” — but this is a paltry sum, a mere drop in the ocean, and nothing compared to the $43.1 billion that Pfizer generated during the same period (Q2 & Q3, 2021) thanks to its dogmatic campaign full of fear and exaggerations, which the CCDH sees as ‘a-okay’.

Imran Ahmed, Chief Executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, said: “Climate change denial is a cynical strategy that seeks to delay the action needed to prevent ecological disaster.”

Really? They think the goal of Electroverse is to ring in the end of world and, therefore, the demise of all its inhabitants, including my three young children? If they’ve even read one of my articles to the end –which in turn assumes they can actually read– then they can’t think that, and I don’t believe they do think that — the extreme stance they’re taking is required in order to justify such a Ministry of Truth take down of an opposing view.

Lines of thinking found guilty of contradicting the mainstream narrative must be quashed by any and all means, because a public with access to objective thinking and alternative views is a threat — a healthy dialogue could lead to a narrative more closely resembling truth, which in turn risks the people pointing the finger at the system instead of at one another.

That is why innocuous stances such as the sun at the heart of ‘climate change’ are now being branded as hate crimes, with the justification being that if such views were allowed to proliferate wider society it risks bringing about the literal end of the world.

George Orwell is referenced to death these days, to the point where quotes can seem cliche. But when a piece of writing (1984) is proven so prophetic (along with Huxley’s A Brave New World), it is acceptable, in these instances, to betray a lack of original thought — there is no better summation of what we’re seeing today than, WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

For those who appreciate what I do at Electroverse, please help me continue my fight.

Losing ads is a hit but it can be mitigated by those willing to join my already 516-strong army of patrons –who I am immensely grateful to btw– and donating via Paypal is another option (button within the sidebar if on desktop, scroll down if on mobile) — two platforms that haven’t yet expressed a desire to remove me (but if you know of alternatives to these, please get in touch).

My young family and I are busy preparing for what we see as an inevitable societal collapse (off-grid in Portugal, originally hailing from England), and this website is our only source of income. Something has prevented my from ditching it for more lucrative ventures (much to the exasperation of my wife, and at times even myself), but I see this as the biggest battle in modern times, I feel that everything is at stake here, and I am compelled to do my part.

Please help if you can.

And thank you for reading to the end.

Enjoy your weekend.

I’ll see you on Monday.

Best,
Cap

German Cold Blast To Extend Into January Amid Energy Crisis

BY TYLER DURDEN
ZERO HEDGE
FRIDAY, DEC 17, 2021 - 10:50 AM

A combination of factors creates a perfect storm of turbulence for many Europeans paying some of the highest energy prices ever.

Natural gas stockpiles remain at low levels as gas flows from Europe are depressed. The continuation of cold weather and an energy crunch is expected to further the crisis.

Deutscher Wetterdienst or DWD for short, is the German Meteorological Service. They released new data Friday forecasting month-ahead temperatures will remain below seasonal levels through the third week of January.

2021-12-17_06-59-20.png

Europeans have no relief in sight as natgas stockpiles dwindle and prices hit new record-highs, forcing utility companies who use fossil fuel generators to charge some of the highest power prices ever.

Making matters worse is Germany's federal network agency, Bundesnetzagentur, announced Thursday that Russia's Nord Stream 2 pipeline will come online in July. Say goodbye to new supplies as the Dutch month-ahead gas, the European benchmark, continues to soar to new record highs, printing around 139 euros.

2021-12-17_07-00-49.png

We must point out the situation in the US is the complete opposite. Warm weather and ample supplies have depressed natgas prices. However, that could change next month (read: here).

FWIW it's 72 degrees here in southern MS as I type this. I have the doors open and am wearing a t-shirt! This is not normal at all. We didn't have a single freezing day in November and thus far, haven't had one in December!

We're about fifty miles off of the coast and it's usually at least a couple of degrees cooler here than it is right on the water. We've had a few chilly days, but again, no freezing weather and most days have been very moderate. I can't help but wonder if winter is going to hit with a vengeance closer to the new year.

We're going to near 80 today for a high, it's cloudy, warm and extremely humid. We just topped off all the animal feed for what's coming in tomorrow morning, sometime around dawn. Big cold front, strong winds, not supposed to be severe, and rain (which we desperately need). Then for the next four days our highs are supposed to be in the 40s - low 50s, and overnight temps around freezing. Windy, cold, and wet are the terrible trifecta for livestock.

Right now, though, our inside the house temp is at 74 and everything is sticky. We have the ceiling fans going in all the rooms, I'm really trying to not switch to a/c since temps are going to drop like a rock in less than 24 hrs. But, while working outside I've been in a tank top all morning. This is kind of nuts for this time of year....various parts of our area have been breaking warm temp records all week.

TxGal, I couldn't get it to play, either...I hope he gets back to it and fixes it soon.

There's so much happening lately I'm almost getting afraid to check for new articles and videos any more.

I'll be doing more small-town shopping tomorrow AM if it isn't raining too hard for me to drive in the dark. Hope the little grocery has gotten in some last minute Honeysuckle turkey, or turkey breast. I have lots in the freezer, ready to can in pints, but it's gotten to be the only meat I can eat and if I can't get more now, I doubt I'll ever get any again at all.

We've had some nice warm days but the predicted 2 1/2" of rain we should have gotten this past week sure did fizzle out again! And starting tomorrow night, we're supposed to get four nights of temps below freezing and then back to more normal December temps of the nicer variety. I'm afraid to think what January and February might bring us here, but for now, it's just one day at a time, which adds up to one week at a time which will bring spring before I know it and maybe I'll try once again to get a few outdoor things planted. Even if it's just potatoes and maybe some cold-hardy greens and root crops, those are good nutrition and might hopefully grow. Maybe I can fill the remaining grow containers with wild foods like dandelion, lambsquarters, plantain, clover, etc. I get tired of losing garden greens to those bedamned little striped worms and to the little green worms and the cabbage loopers.

I'm not expecting a real good growing season for the coming year...I hope I'm wrong!

Hey there, Martinhouse!

We're getting storms now, so far they're more of the normal thunderstorm variety. We do the need rain, supposedly the higher wind gusts come in behind the rain. My net connection is in and out with heavy rain, but that's pretty normal here.

I've been seeing a fair amount of the Honeysuckle turkeys around here still, which is good to see. I was amazed to see any turkeys here after Thanksgiving. I hope you can grab a few next time you shop.

Your forecast is similar to mine - 4 nights of freezing temps, then back to a bit warmer. I'm hanging on to some older potatoes that are beginning to sprout so I can plant those. I still need more soil, though, and thankfully I do have a good amount of seed on hand to get some things in the ground. This see-sawing weather does make it a challenge, though!

Martinhouse... see if you can find some form of Bt in your town. It's an organic insecticide that *only* kills caterpillars. You can spray it up to the day of harvest without any issue.

It's a bacteria which, when they consume it, causes them to stop eating within 24 hours.

It would let you grow anything you want without worm problems.

BHOPAL, INDIA SUFFERS LOWEST TEMP IN 55 YEARS

Bhopal, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradeshas and on the Tropic of Cancer, just shivered through its coldest night in 55 years.

On Sunday, the mercury in the city plunged to 4 degrees Celsius (39.2F) — the coldest low since the 3.1C (37.6F) of December 11, 1966 (solar minimum of cycle 19) and easily the coldest of recent years, with 2018’s 4.9C (40.8F) coming the closest.

Laxmi Sharma, 71, says Sunday’s bone-chilling cold reminded her of what it was like on that “freezing night” of Dec 11, 1966.

“A bonfire was the only way to beat the chill 55 years ago. It was tough to survive the 3-degree cold without heaters and geysers. We sat around a bonfire outside our house. Everything felt like freezing,” she told the timesofindia.com, who also provide the below graphic which shows that Bhopal’s minimum temps have been gradually decreasing over the past decade:

A cold wave warning remains in place for Bhopal, and 17 other districts, as a record-breaking chill continues to grip much of India:

“HAZARDOUS” FREEZE TO HIT THE PRAIRIES

According to theweathernetwork.com: “An extremely cold air mass form Siberia will descend on Canada’s West Coast this week, also sweeping across the Prairies.

Daytime highs will struggle to get above the upper -20Cs in many regions, with a few spots suffering -30Cs (that’s beyond -22F).

With the wind chill, it will feel like -30 to -40C (-22 to -40F) over the weekend.

Christmas Day has the potential to be record-breaking across a number of locales, including in Edmonton, Alta., which may suffer its coldest air on December 25 in half a century.

Overnight lows will be even colder, reaching or surpassing -30C (-22F) for many.

TEMPSAT

In fact, that Edmonton forecast of -27C (-16.6F) rivals the coldest Dec 25 of all time: the -28.9C of 1917 (the Centennial Minimum):

image (2)

Outdoor exposure should be limited during this time, warns the network: “Extreme cold puts everyone at risk, so be sure to take the plummeting temperatures seriously.”

RARE POLAR STRATOSPHERIC CLOUDS SPOTTED

“We saw them on Dec 14, 15 & 16,” said Laura Kranich, who photographed these colorful forms over Örnskjöldsvik, Sweden:

They are called ‘polar stratospheric clouds’ (PSCs) –different to NLCs “and they are very rare,” writes Dr Tony Philips of spaceweather.com.

Normally, the stratosphere has no clouds at all. PSCs form when the temperature drops to a staggeringly-low -85C (-121F). Then, and only then, can sparse water molecules in the stratosphere begin to coalesce into tiny ice crystals — the “stuff” of PSCs.

Because of their intense iridescent colors, these clouds are widely regarded as the most beautiful on Earth.

Sometimes they rival auroras themselves.

“Once seen they are never forgotten,” says atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley.

PSCs above Abisko, Sweden on Dec 18.

In a typical Arctic winter, PSCs appear two or three times at most, explains Dr. Philips.

This early, long apparition might herald a good season — it’s unusually cold up there.

TONGA-HUNGA VOLCANO ERUPTS TO 49,200 FEET

A powerful explosion occurred at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano 20:30 Tonga time on December 19, as reported by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Wellington, and as confirmed by the Himawari-8 Satellite:

View: https://twitter.com/geoign/status/1472731905556910081
Run time is 0:12

The eruption at the uninhabited island was loud, and was heard some 170 km away on nearby islands.

As documented by volcanodiscovery.com, a spectacular ash plume was fired out of the submarine summit. The plume then quickly rose to an altitude of approx. 15 km (49,200 ft)–and so into the stratosphere.

Sentinel-5 and TROPOMI satellite-based measurements of atmospheric SO2 concentrations detected as much as 10 kilotons extending to the north of the volcano:

SO2 emissions detected by TROPOMI and Sentinel 5.

From available satellite images and pictures, the presence of water is likely causing significant explosive interaction (phreatomagmatic activity) of water and magma.

This looks to be a VEI 2 eruption — and although noteworthy, it will likely have limited impact on global temperatures.

We’re still waiting for that ‘big one’, that monster VEI 6 or 7 that shoots a seemingly endless stream of particulates into the stratosphere which block sunlight and drop Earth’s average temperature by 2C almost overnight.

It’s coming.

“RED ALERTS” ISSUED IN INDIA AS COLD WAVE INTENSIFIES

Cold records have been tumbling across India this week, as an Arctic chill descended unusually-far south. And now, India’s Meteorological Department (IMD) is warning that “severe cold wave conditions” will grip much of the country moving forward, including parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Rajasthan and MP.

A cold wave swept Delhi on Monday with the minimum temperature at the Safdarjung Observatory, considered the official marker for the capital, dropping to 3.2C (37.8F) — five notches below normal, and the lowest of the season so far.

Elsewhere, a host of multidecadal benchmarks fell during the initial cold wave, including in Bhopal where the city’s coldest December day since 1966 was suffered. Long-standing records were also busted in the likes of Rajasthan, Churu, Siker, Bhilwara, Pilani, Chittorgarh and Ganganagar.

“Intense cold conditions continued to paralyze normal life in Rajasthan,” is how a recent republicworld.com article described it. Rajasthan state reportedly saw the mercury dip below freezing at four places on Sunday night: – 1.8C in Fatehpu; -0.5C in both Sikar and Churu; and -0.1C in Karauli, with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeting Monday that measures should be taken to save crops from frost in these regions.

Even colder conditions prevailed further north, as you’d expect, with Lahaul Spiti, located in India’s northern province of Himachal Pradesh, gripped by lows of -15C to -20C (5F to -4F) on Tuesday, according to DD News on Twitter:

View: https://twitter.com/DDNewslive/status/1473180755199148034
Run time is 0:11

The IMD has also noted that light to moderate snowfall should be expected over the western Himalayan region between December 22 and 25 under the influence of two western disturbances.

RECORD SNOWFALL HITS SWITZERLAND

This week, much of the Alps and the Pyrenees have experienced historically snowy conditions: “best snow ever,” are the cries across the peaks; “it’s dumping down!” others are reportedly yelling.

It’s not often you start the ski season with already record volumes of snow (for December). However, this year, and thanks in no small part to Storm Barra that hit a few weeks back, it seems European’s are being compensated for having to hang up their planks last season–due to the lockdown of ski resorts across the continent.

“We’ve had about 82cm (32.3 inches),” Benoit Python, a ski instructor from the Swiss Ski School Crans-Montana, said.

“And over in Chamonix, they’ve had nearly 85cm (33.5 inches)!”

According to The Chamoniarde (Chamonix Mountain Prevention and Relief Society, France’s world-famous freeride destination), there hasn’t been snowfall like this since 1966 (solar minimum of cycle 19).

“I shoveled snow outside my house for 3 days on the trot,” said local mountain guide, Andy Perkins, as reported by euronews.com.

“I skied some exceptional powder down to very low altitudes on December 11,” he continued.

“I was out today (Dec 14) at one of my regular pre-season snow test sites around 2,400 metres (7,800 ft), and the depth is more than 100cm (39.7 inches) greater than what I’ve seen on average in previous years!”

@rob stewert / ski press
Headed for the trees in poor conditions — Crans Montana, Switzerland.

All this early season snow is great news for enthusiasts. But Perkins is keen to issue a warning, too.

“Stellar” conditions are set to persist for the remainder of the year, he says; however, “In the run-up to 2022, enthusiasm for lift based off-piste skiing and ski touring is building like a pressure cooker … this large quantity of snow is sat on a twitchy (unstable) base” … “enthusiasm is great, but needs tempering with knowledge, judgement and good decision making in terms of avalanche risk assessment,” warns Perkins.

AMID FREEZING LOWS & ENERGY SHORTAGES, EUROPE STRUGGLES TO KEEP THE LIGHTS ON

Electricity prices surged to a fresh record in Europe this week, as France, in particular, scrambled to keep its lights on, sucking up supplies from the rest of the continent.

Strong winter demand and simmering geopolitical tensions between key supplier Russia and consumer nations led prices to new all-time benchmarks on Tuesday as this orchestrated collapse of western society ratchets up a notch.

Europe’s reference Dutch TTF gas price hit 162.775 euros per megawatt hour in late morning deals, up more than ten percent from Monday, while UK prices leapt to 408.30 pence per therm (seven times greater than at the start of 2021) — both markets beat previous records from October, with this latest price spike driven predominantly by fears of a cold northern hemisphere winter, and doing nothing to allay concerns of spiraling worldwide inflation.

European gas “continued its inexorable rise… to another record,” wrote Deutsche Bank analysts in a client note.

“It comes as temperatures have continued to decline heading into the European winter, and we also got the news that [Russian energy giant] Gazprom had not booked any extra capacity in January for gas flowing through Ukraine.

“That’s an important story heading through the winter with implications for European growth, and one that will have investors closely following the weather forecasts to work out what might happen.”

As reported by The Moscow Times, “Europe’s gas stocks had already been depleted by a prolonged winter last year. Added to the picture, calmer prevailing weather conditions have this year sharply reduced the supply of wind power.”

Russia isn’t helping the situation, naturally, German Economic Affairs Minister Robert Habeck warning Saturday of “severe consequences” for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany if Moscow attacked Ukraine.

But the 10-billion-euro ($12 billion) project has for years been dogged by delays and drawn fierce criticism from both Germany’s eastern EU allies like Poland and the US, who claim Nord Stream 2 will increase Europe’s dependence on Russian gas, with the Ukraine describing it as a “geopolitical weapon”–but be in no doubt, today’s energy shortages and soaring prices are due to the crippling-cold weather compounded by reduced investment due to fossil fuels going out of favor with investors (the latter thanks to ideologically-hamstrung politicians duped by powerful bodies with nefarious intentions disguised a ‘green ideals’).

Getting back on point, ‘negatively impacting European growth’, as the Deutsche Bank puts it, won’t be of the greatest importance to the average household — rolling blackouts during the coldest months of the year will be. There is a looming humanitarian crisis here — and one, as they often are, that is entirely self-inflicted.

A 2-year-old child died from the cold on December 12 in Turkey’s southeastern Diyarbakır province after the Dicle Electric Distribution Company (DEDAŞ) failed to provide the family with electricity.

The child, Yunus Emre Binen, suffered from asthma and bronchitis and regularly used a nebulizer. The machine could not work without electricity, and the little boy’s health quickly deteriorated. Yunus Emre died before making it to hospital.

DEDAŞ authorities refused to acknowledge they should be held accountable for the death, saying: “We did not cut the family’s power and therefore have no responsibility for the little boy’s tragic death.”

Record cold and snow has gripped much of transcontinental Turkey this month.

Just last week, heavy snow blocked roads and cut off a number of towns and villages from the outside world. As reported by the dailysabah.com, snowstorms took hold in Turkey’s eastern and western regions, blocking hundreds of roads, including 43 in Başkale, 11 in Digor, and a further 31 in Erzincan, .

Snow depth surpassed 80cm (2.63ft) in the country’s higher elevations, thanks to persistent falls which began back in late-Nov/early-Dec:

View: https://twitter.com/Brave_spirit81/status/1466106959355125778
Run time is 9:18

And blackouts won’t just be confined to the poorest nation’s of the west, ‘green ideals’ and reduced investment threaten all of us — the cold of winter is on course to invade even the wealthiest of nations: Recall Texas last winter, when 702 people died…

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among many other forcings, including the impending release of the Beaufort Gyre).

RECORD-BREAKING FLURRIES HIT PRINCE GEORGE, + “SNOW TO PILE AS HIGH AS A ONE-STORY BUILDING” IN PARTS OF THE US

RECORD-BREAKING FLURRIES HIT PRINCE GEORGE

A Heavy Snowfall Declaration has been declared in the B.C. City of Prince George after a record-breaking 35cm (13.8 inches) accumulated in just 24 hours.

When PG receives snowfall of 20+cm (7.9+inches) in a 24-hour period a Heavy Snowfall Declaration is issued, explains myprincegeorgenow.com. An additional 24 hours is added for every 8cm (3 inches) of snow the city receives, meaning it won’t be until Saturday before clearing crews begin working residential areas.

Meteorologist Trevor Smith told MyPGNow.com the snow will now make way record-challenging cold.

“As we get into Christmas weekend, we are looking at low around minus thirty and minus thirty-four,” he said–with PG’s all-time December low being the -48.9C set on Dec 31, 1927.

View: https://twitter.com/mypgnow/status/1473708046731907077

Residents have been advised to avoid non-essential travel and if they must travel; exercise patience, drive to conditions and take extra time to plan their routes. Drivers should also bring winter gear and an emergency kit in your vehicle with them.

Record snow wasn’t just confined to the inner city, either: Environment Canada’s Prince George-Massey station recorded 15cm (5.9 inches) on Tuesday — a new record for Dec 21 (comfortably busting the old benchmark of 11.4cm (4.5 inches) set in 1949.

“SNOW TO PILE AS HIGH AS A ONE-STORY BUILDING” IN PARTS OF THE US

A significant winter storm is set to wallop the Northwest U.S. over the Christmas weekend, potentially delivering record-breaking snow at or near sea level to places like Washington and Oregon.

The snow will be widespread over weekend, according to latest GFS runs (shown below) — a white Christmas could be on the cards for cities like Seattle and Portland, where the climatological odds of such an event usually stand at just 1% to 3%.

GFS Total Snowfall (inches) Dec 23 – Jan 8 [tropicaltidbits.com].

Meantime in the Sierra Nevada mountains, isolated snow totals could pile high enough to reach the second story of a building — up to 10 feet, according to meteorologists at the Sacramento National Weather Service office, and as reported by those bastions of truth and enlightenment CNN, while most Sierra Nevadas locales will more likely see 5 to 8 feet.

“Travel across the Sierra will be difficult to impossible at times through the holiday weekend,” the Reno weather service office warned Wednesday.

Parts of the Intermountain West will also measure the snow in feet, while the Midwest and Northeast could also cop a healthy dumping of multiple inches (I’m discarding that band of green that extends east out of Texas early Jan, but we’ll see).

GFS Total Snowfall (inches) Dec 23 – Jan 8 [tropicaltidbits.com].

Beyond the holidays, Canada’s and the NW’s polar chill looks set to finally descend south and spread east by the New Year — this will prove a stark shift for many, as many regions flip from anomalous warmth to an exceptional freeze, almost instantaneously:

GFS 2m Temperature Anomaly (C) Dec 29 – Jan 4 [tropicaltidbits.com].

See ‘Grand Solar Minimum and the Swing Between Extremes’:

To all those that celebrate it, have a Merry Christmas.

I’m taking a few days off to enjoy the holidays with my family.

I’ll be back Dec 27/28 (depending on how much Blue Curacao and soft cheese I consume).

Thank you for your support this year — it’s been a long one…

Best,

My guess is more people will pay attention to the possibilities as the weather gets stranger and colder in many areas. There's just so much bad news out there, almost everyone is struggling on way or another to stay on top of things in the here and now...a year+ down the road is not on everyone's radar yet.

You are SOooo right about that! I was originally planning on enjoying a carefree Spring by not breeding my goats this year, then ... Well, then came food shortages and inflation, rumors of war and economic collapse and I finally resolved to forgo the carefree aspect. I put the buck in with the 'ladies' two weeks ago so should have freshenings occur in mid May. Then it's breeding time for the family cow (our Angus heifer).
The way thing are going, you can never plan for the next crisis but prepare for as broad an outcome as possible.

Comment:
Forecasts based on solar activity, coupled with measurements on earth, show that it is looking increasingly likely that our planet is moving quickly towards yet another ice age; so much so, that even scientists funded to push the global warming agenda are unable to deny the occurrence, and likely increase, of extreme 'cold snaps' in our future:

Historians knew this, it was written about in A Distant Mirror by Tuchman about 40 years ago - she didn't have the why of the weather change, but it was obvious from the European historical sources that it happened.

A toxic cloud spewing from an erupting volcano in Tonga could dump acid rainfall across the Pacific kingdom, potentially poisoning drinking water and damaging people's skin and eyes, emergency services have warned.

The remote Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano erupted Monday, sending plumes 18 kilometres (11 miles) into the air, Tonga Geological Services (TGS) said.

Police reported no injuries from the eruption but TGS said late Tuesday that the dust and gas could result in acidic rainfall if mixed with water in the atmosphere.

It advised residents to remove guttering systems from their rainwater storage systems until the all-clear was given.

"Symptoms of exposure to acid rain are itchiness and skin irritation, blurry and discolouration of vision if exposed to the eye," it said.

"If eyes or skin are exposed to acidic rain, please see a medical doctor or physician for appropriate treatment."

The volcano sits on an uninhabited island about 65 kilometres (41 miles) north of the Tongan capital Nuku'alofa.

The volcano last came to life in 2015, creating a new island structure on its caldera.

An aviation code red was issued after the eruption, advising airlines to avoid the area, resulting in Air New Zealand cancelling a flight from Auckland to Nuku'alofa on Tuesday.
