Does anyone know of a treatment for gout? My 31 yr. old son has been diagnosed with gout. He is having excrutiating pain in his big toe. The toe, plus down the side of his foot, and the pad beneath his big toe is very swollen, red, feverish, and painful. He is having a hard time with it. His doctor put him on prescription strength vitamin B12. It has done absolutely nothing for him.
Any help would sure be appreciated.

Do a search on the threads....I know we had this discussion several months ago, and you'll likely come up with some great information.

My dr put me on colchichine (sp). Rx is take two right away, and one every 2 hours till you puke or get the runs. Luckily, I went to bed before that, and by morning it was so much better I could hardly believe it.
Some say eating cherries, eating raisins are good, too.
Hope he feels better.
ps: my gout was in my thumb, not my foot, so it can hit other spots, too.

Bodybagger, I found the thread you were talking about. Stupid me, I never even thought to do a search first. Thanks. Here is the thread: http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?t=140979&highlight=gout

Squeeksmom, that sounds like a horrible remedy. I think I would rather stick to cherries. :D Glad it worked for you though.

I'm going to give my son the information I found on the above thread. I'm sure he will be pleased to know he can get some help.

Celery seed tea tastes gross, make sure you sweeten with honey. It does take time to get used to it. The first time I tried to drink a cup, I barely finished 3/4 a cup, thought I was going to ralph. The only reason I kept drinking it was because 10 minutes later, all pain in my toe and knee were gone!

For about a year 1/2 I had to drink 2-3 cups per day. I finally got to the point where I would only drink a cup if I had a flare up. I haven't needed to take any for 4-5 years now. Best yet, my doc hasn't found any indications of gout in my blood work.

My DH also has gout. He drinks two glasses of Cran-grape or Cran-raspberry everyday. One glass for breakfast and the other with dinner. He used to get it all the time till he started drinking the cranberry juice. Now it might only flare up every two to three years and then he gets a prescription. I felt really bad for him when it acted up. Before the cranberry juice he was having problems with it three to four times a year.

When I first started having episodes, I had no clue what it was. Well, thx Dad, it's gout. I've learned that asprin will raise the uric acid level. For a long time, I was taking an asprin a day,not realizing I was way overdoing it, which kept the uric acid levels high enough that it didn't take much to bring an episode on. My doc said processed meats containing sodium nitrite are the biggest culprit. So, I make sure I take 81mg baby asprin and eat very little bacon, sausage, deli meats, etc and read the label. When I do overdo and my big toe joint lets me know, I run for the cherries, either fresh or dried and up my water intake.

Gout is associated with high blood pressure, kidney disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and uric acid kidney stones.

A new gout drug, febuxostat, which is awaiting FDA approval (2005), has proven to be very beneficial in reducing urate levels. 81% of patients taking the drug had healthy urate levels of less than 6 mg/dl, compared with only 39% who took 300 mg per day of allopurinol, the most widely prescribed gout drug.
• Hypothyroidism is often involved with gout. See our Thyroid section for more information.
While traditional thinking is that certain foods cause gout, recent research, however, indicates that lead poisoning may be another possible cause. The lead poisoning makes the aldosterone system insensitive to potassium concentration and increases the potassium content of the blood. A potassium deficiency can increase urate levels in the blood. Aldosterone is a hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex (part of the adrenal gland) that is important in the control of blood pressure and the regulation of sodium and potassium concentration.
• Aspirin can raise uric acid levels. If you need to use pain killers, only use ones with ibuprofen.

• Having sex prevents men from getting gout. It seems that increased sexual activity reduces uric acid levels in fertile men.

Shark cartilage used on a daily basis of 3-6 capsules/day can make the pain disappear and allow you to eat previously forbidden foods within one week without experiancing pain in the affected joint. After approximately one month of continuous use, you may stop taking the cartilage until the pain reoccurs. At this point you will probably only need to take the cartilage (3-6 capsules) for a week or two. You may continue this on/off cycle as needed. Your uric acid level may return to normal, but even if it doesn't, the pain will go away.
Vitamin C 1,000 mg per hour at the very outset of a gout attack, then reduce to 500-3,000 mg daily for maintenance. Vitamin C helps lower serum uric acid levels.
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) Add some rose hips to vinegar and boil; dab on affected area. You may need to apply this mixture several times a day for a few weeks. The vinegar changes the blood pH so that the crystals will go into solution and be excreted.
Garlic Eat several cloves of raw garlic daily. Mince the garlic and add it to black cherry juice for a potent remedy.
