I hope I don't jinx myself by posting this. It has been over 3 weeks since I received a scam/telemarketing phone call on my landline. This hasn't happened to me for years. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it possible the government is actually enforcing their Do Not Call rules?

Gov enforcing those rules?
Dial 6 - 6.
In others words, N - O.

Do what Owner does. Get a call from an obvious scammer? Simply be "quiet" and let the caller/recording ramble on. Resist any temptation to cut off an actual caller - and simply wait until they hang up.

But they have to hang up first - not you.

Calls that "go through" are of value to them or others. Think $. Calls that are "not sure" are of no value. Your "hanging up" or responding in any way proves that a human was at the other end. If you don't hang up or respond in any way they have no proof that the call was actually completed. By letting THEM hang up they have nothing of value.

Do this a few times and I imagine like Owner you will receive a VERY FEW marketing calls.

You may have just jinxed yourself. They do seem to go in cycles. We tend to get more calls towards the end of the month.

I'm going to have to give this approach a try. At times, I'm getting several junk calls a day. Which can be a severe pain in the as*.

That is exactly what we do. In the last 3 weeks or so, have only had one. Seems to be working for us.

I literally HATE those calls !!!

My landline screens calls automatically, I program in my moms # so it rings straight through as normal, but any number not programmed in goes through a screening process before it rings through. The strange caller says who they are and when the phone rings it say "call from ______" and if I don't like what I hear, it goes to voice mail.

I highly recommend it, and if the power is out the base has a phone still. I reccomend getting a base unit with a hard wired phone on it.

The phone boiler rooms are all taken up with political calls right now.
Wait a couple weeks and they'll be back to their regularly scheduled scamming.

Does “Owner” say hello when he picks up? Or does he just pick up and say nothing?

I think he says "hello" - but waits for part of the spiel before backing away.

I once heard him say hello - and obviously there was a human at the other end. He said nothing but let the human go on. Then I hear from the phone (which by this time was sitting on the gate)

"Hello, hello. Is anyone there? (voice in background) "Did he hang up?" (voice in foreground) "No, the line seems alive but I don't hear anything."

And then CLICK the call ended.

Owner recovered his phone after a couple minutes more.

The key here is phone time costs money - either for the call itself, or from the "cost of attention" you represent. And if they don't get satisfaction from you, then they go elsewhere to get the "most bang for the buck."

The phone sitting there apparently dead is money apparently being taken from their pockets.

And they don't want that...

I’ve been really frustrated lately with all the calls I’ve been getting. I am on the Do Not Call list, but I don’t think it does any good.

Here’s a funny story about this -

Saturday night I was perusing Facebook and saw a reminder of a niece’s birthday, so I posted a birthday wish for her. (We don’t keep in touch.)

About an hour later, my phone rang and showed “Potential Spam” along with a city/state far away from me. Since it was after 9 pm on a Saturday night, I got really ticked off that “they” would call so late. So I answered and said, “WHAT?”

I heard a female voice say, “Hello,” and I said, WHO IS THIS?”

She answered with her name. It was my niece!

I felt SO bad! Spent a few minutes apologizing and explaining why I answered that way, we had a good laugh, and then we caught up for about an hour!

She’s now in my contact list, so she’ll be identified if/when she calls again.

No landline for 15 years.

Spam caller problem solved on the landline.

Cell phone diverts all calls from unrecognized numbers (not in my contacts list) to voicemail. The scammers rarely leave a voice message. Only legitimate calls from known numbers make it thru as a call on my cell phone.

Spam caller problem solved on my cell phone.

Anyone else who really needs to contact me or has an important message will leave a voicemail.

I have successfully removed from my life any and all concerns or annoyances related to spam phone calls.
