Herbal Goldenseal Root

I accidentally ordered the wrong thing. I ordered Goldenseal Root instead of powder. I wanted to have this in my medicine cabinet for possible treatment of infection. Does anyone know if I can just grind this up? What do you do with it? Any input appreciated.

I was going to put it in capsules for medicinal use. Can I just grind this to a powder?

Some quick reading indicates I can make a tincture, but I'd like to have capsules for my daughter. She does not like the bitter/alcoholic taste.

Do you have a vitamix? Thats about the only kitchen tool I can think of that might grind it for you...

Summerthyme
No I don't. I guess I'll make a tincture and order some more. I could use it in tea too I guess. I need to read more closely before I hit buy now....

Golden seal is native to the SE US and grows under forest canopy. Rico Cech has done some experimentation growing it in the pacific Northwest under shade cloth, but I don't know of his success rate. You MIGHT be able to get plants from him at

If you don't live in the SE, I would use other plants that contain high levels of berberine (if you are looking for antimicrobial actions) like oregon grape root, yellow dock (not the best choice) or barberry.

You might have to do it in stages. But, first, is this already dried? Because if it is, Summerthyme pretty much has it right.
It is dried. I'll try the coffee grinder in a small batch. Thank you for that idea. We can do tincture or tea. I just want some capsules for dd.

If you ever get a mouth ulcer, we've had great success in healing it quickly with goldenseal powder. It's usually healed in a couple of days. Of course, its very bitter. The most bitter thing I've ever tasted is chinconas extract. Wow! It is extremely bitter.

I am in SE. And I can put it under very old silver maples to get its prefer situation. But I know my luck starting hard to grow seeds. But did find rhizomes at 2 trusted suppliers. So one batch a year until I fill in the spot I'll make for it.

I was going to suggest the coffee grinder also.

I take it in capsule form. It is an extremely good antibiotic!! My doctor actually told me about it. I needed something for a sinus infection and since there are not many antibiotics that I can take, he suggested goldenseal root. It's also worked for mild diverticulitis, though you have to take quite a bit.

For a sinus infection, I would consider putting a mL or two in a bottle of saline nasal spray and putting it directly where it needs to be. Might be a straighter shot than it having to work thru your gut.

We need more people that don't look at things and just see a weed, or a way to make money by overharvesting. thank you!
I am trying to convert the whole yard to food or medicinal plants. I have ginseng seed dropped two years in a row now. Ginger, turmeric, and a few others. Tbh, if I can get the rhizomes, it'll join a few other crops to be left alone unless they're needed.

I've never had a colonoscopy to be sure, but I've had the symptoms of diverticulitis, moderate with bleeding. I read about treatment with higher dose probiotics. I tried taking 3 caps three times a day. Within a day I had improvement and within about 3 days it had resolved. Just sharing in case someone ever needs an at home treatment.

Mild cases can be treated without antibiotics. If I know I'm coming down with it, I simply give my colon a break for a couple of days by either not eating, or going on a liquid diet. Moderate cases I have cleared up with Goldenseal Root.

I don't seem to be able to take probiotics anymore--not even a little kefir or yogurt, without getting a massive migraine. Sad.

I'm sorry. I don't remember. I'm pretty sure it was just from our local health food store. There is research that daily use of probiotics or probiotic rich foods can help decrease flare ups. I just figured it couldn't hurt, and it actually worked.
