FOX News Poll: No Bounce for Obama From Overseas Trip
Thursday , July 24, 2008

By Dana Blanton

The significant news coverage Barack Obama is receiving on his foreign trip has not translated into a bounce in his numbers, a just-released FOX News poll shows. Obama now holds the slimmest possible edge over John McCain, leading by just 41 percent - 40 percent in a head-to-head contest. In fact, Obama’s support is down slightly from his 45 percent - 41 percent advantage last month.

Opinion Dynamics Corp. conducted the national telephone poll of 900 registered voters for FOX News from July 22 to July 23. During that time Obama was traveling in Jordan, Israel and Palestinian territories. In the days before the poll was taken Obama had been touring Afghanistan and Iraq. The poll has a 3-point error margin.

Among independents, Obama has a narrow 2 percentage point edge: 34 percent to McCain’s 32 percent, and 34 percent undecided.

McCain has more strength of support from his party faithful. Fully 86 percent of Republicans back McCain compared to 75 percent of Democrats that back Obama.

Given that the independent vote splits about evenly, one might expect McCain’s strength in Republican support would give him an advantage overall. The reason that fails to happen is that the pool of Republican voters is smaller than the pool of Democratic voters, which means McCain’s party-based edge has less impact on the race than it might otherwise. In this poll 42 percent of voters identify as Democrat and 33 percent Republican, and that’s about where the party identification numbers have been all year.

"It seems increasingly clear that this race will come down to which candidate can better appeal to the roughly one-third of independent voters who remain undecided," says Ernie Paicopolos, a principal of Opinion Dynamics.

McCain’s support declines a little when third party candidates are included, even though Libertarian Bob Barr receives less than 1 percent and independent Ralph Nader receives only 2 percent, Obama’s advantage goes to 3 percentage points (40 percent to 37 percent). Another 17 percent are undecided.

More voters say they would be “enthusiastic” if Obama (23 percent) were to become the next president than if McCain does (13 percent). On the other hand, more also say they would be “scared” if Obama wins (19 percent) than if McCain wins (14 percent).

Overall, about equal numbers would have a positive reaction (enthusiastic or pleased) if either Obama (45 percent) or McCain (41 percent) were elected.

On the Issues

On the top issues in the election, Obama is trusted more to handle the economy (47 percent – 36 percent) and health care (51 percent – 31 percent). McCain is trusted more on the war on terrorism (52 percent – 34 percent) and the situation in Iraq (47 percent – 39 percent).

The good news for the Obama campaign is significantly more people say they will decide their vote based on economic issues (40 percent) than on national security issues (18 percent).

The candidates are essentially tied when asked which is trusted more to appoint justices to the U.S. Supreme Court (Obama 40 percent – McCain 41 percent) and hold down spending (Obama 41 percent – McCain 41 percent).

Many more voters think Obama (30 percent) has made some “serious changes” to his positions on the issues since the end of the primary than think McCain has (18 percent). Equal numbers of voters think Obama (36 percent) and McCain (37 percent) have made small changes to their positions.

Is Obama a Christian or a Muslim?

A majority thinks talk of Obama being a Muslim is just that – talk. Some 57 percent say Obama is a Christian and disregard comments about him being a Muslim as rumor. One in ten 10 percent believe Obama is a Muslim. Another 27 percent are unsure.

Majorities of Democrats (71 percent) and independents (59 percent) believe Obama is a Christian. Republicans (20 percent) are much more likely than independents (7 percent) and Democrats (5 percent) to believe Obama is secretly a Muslim.

Just under half — 49 percent — think McCain’s time in a North Vietnamese prisoner of war camp would make him a better president and 11 percent say that experience would make him a worse president. One third (33 percent) say McCain’s five years in captivity would make no difference to his ability to serve as president.

Two Likeable Guys

Both Obama and McCain are viewed positively by voters. A 58 percent majority has a favorable opinion of Obama and 33 percent unfavorable. For McCain, 54 percent view him favorably and 38 percent unfavorably.

Barack Mohammed Obama does appear to be polling well, however, with the death row community.

Why, he picked up another important endorsement just last night. :D

Bishop put to death
Kathleen Baydala • kbaydala@jackson.gannett.com • July 24, 2008

PARCHMAN — Before he died Wednesday evening, death row inmate Dale Leo Bishop apologized to his victim's family, thanked America and urged people to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

"For those who oppose the death penalty and want to see it end, our best bet is to vote for Barack Obama because his supporters have been working behind the scenes to end this practice," Bishop said.

Bishop, 34, was pronounced dead by lethal injection at 6:14 p.m. - the second inmate put to death in Mississippi in two months. Earl Wesley Berry, 49, was executed May 21.

The execution culminated a flurry of last-minute appeals that began late last month seeking to save Bishop's life.

A Lee County jury convicted Bishop in 2000 of participating in the murder of Marcus Gentry, who was beaten to death in December 1998 with a claw hammer. His body was found along a logging road near Saltillo.

Bishop did not deliver the fatal blows. He became only the eighth person put to death who did not directly kill his victim among the more than 1,100 executed since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976 - not including contract killings.

Described as talkative in his final hours, Bishop visited with family, including his parents, and finished his last meal - three pieces of pineapple supreme pizza, cherries-and-cream-flavored ice cream and root beer. He declined a final shower and sedative.

Bishop's final words were: "God bless America. It has been great living here. That's all."

Bishop called Gentry's beating death on Dec. 10, 1998, a "senseless and needless act." Earlier in the day, Bishop described the fatal beating as "a fight that had gone too far," state Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps said.

About an hour before Bishop was executed, the nation's high court denied his last appeal. Gov. Haley Barbour had denied clemency earlier Wednesday.

"Justice has been rendered for this horrible crime," Barbour said in a statement after the execution.

Bishop, who was mentally ill, asked a judge for the death penalty after he was convicted.

Gentry's mother, Kathy Gentry, and uncle, Gerald Gentry, witnessed the execution. They did not speak to the media, but a victim's advocate read a written statement from them.

"We had to relive all the memories and emotions from that December," part of the statement said. "The pain and loss that this man helped put on us will never be forgotten. We lost Mark not by chance but by the choice of two ungodly men."

The other man convicted of Gentry's murder, Jessie Johnson, who was tried separately, is serving a life sentence.

Protesters have used the disparity in the two sentences to illustrate the injustice they say is inherent in the death penalty. Under Mississippi law, an accessory before the fact can be convicted of the same crime someone else commits.

Gentry's family members said they felt "a small piece of justice" was served.

Bishop's ex-wife, Tonya Cunningham, his nephew, David Wolf, and his attorneys also watched the execution. None spoke to reporters later.

Though Bishop eight years ago had asked a judge for the death penalty, officials said he had changed his mind.

"He wants to live, at least that's what he indicated to us," Epps said a few hours before the execution. "He said when he asked to be sentenced to death he was at a low point in his life. He was getting separated, and his wife was taking their three kids."

C. Daryl Neely, a policy adviser to Barbour and execution witness, said Bishop was writing Wednesday afternoon when he and Epps visited him at his cell.

"One of the things he wrote was, 'A man who takes no action has no regret,' " Neely said. "I asked him what that meant, and he admitted there are some things in his life he regrets."

Helping kill Gentry was one of them.

Epps said he asked Bishop about Johnson. "He indicated to me he thought Johnson should be where is now - on death row," Epps said.

On the night Gentry was killed, he, Johnson, Bishop and Ricky Myhand had been riding around and drinking beer. An argument began after Johnson accused Gentry of getting Johnson's brother in trouble with the law.

Johnson hit Gentry over the head with a hammer, and Bishop grabbed him in a headlock and hit him, according to testimony. When Gentry jumped from the car and fled, Bishop ran after him and took him back to the car, where he was hit and kicked numerous times. Bishop acknowledged holding Gentry while Johnson struck him.

Myhand reported the killing to police. He was not charged.

At trial, forensic pathologist Steven Hayne testified there were 23 injuries to the head, neck and hand produced by a blunt object.

Give Mr. Bishop credit for being conscientious enough to remind all of us that we should exercise his will through our voting franchise. :lkick:

So does this indicate criminals in general support Obama? Or only those who have committed murder?

Of course it does.
Barak, the Majic Marxist promises to disarm the American people, thus making it easier for criminals to ply their trade!!

If McPain were talking about sealing the border and forcibly deporting all the illegals, either by plane, bus , or body bag, he'd be ahead by 50+ points by now!!!

One could guestimate that Obama's trip was meant to show the American people that the world would embrace him, and his philosophical plan about the world and America's 'future' if he were elected. Kind of what could be called HIS show of possible world strength. It really did not look like he was that well embraced to me, but I suppose those who took the time to meet with him did it as a show of courtesy rather than strenght.

As an American citizen, I have to wonder why he is poli-ticking in foreign countries, other than campaign contributions from them (did that happen?) I cannot really see any benefit to his trip. The trip itself is not going to affect or change my vote, and he does not have it at this time, my never will.

Polls: McCain gains in battleground states

McCain, R-Ariz., who likely will face Democrat Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in November, leads Obama in Colorado, while narrowing the gap since June 26 in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin, Quinnipiac University polls show.

In Colorado, McCain leads Obama 46 percent to 44 percent. In Michigan, Obama leads McCain 46 percent to 42 percent, while in Minnesota Obama narrowly leads McCain 46 percent to 44 percent. In Wisconsin, Obama leads McCain 50 percent to 39 percent.

"Senator Barack Obama's post-primary bubble hasn't burst, but it is leaking a bit. It's been a good month for Senator John McCain. His movement in these key states, not large except for Minnesota, jibes with the tightening we are seeing in the national polls," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"The good news for McCain is that he has improved his standing in Colorado and Michigan, two states that are critical to each man's strategy," Brown added.

The polls are based on surveys conducted July 14 to July 22. The maximum margin of error for the polls is about plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. The state sample sizes range from 1,094 to 1,984 likely voters.

I second that amen!!!!!!!!

People better wake up before it is too late. McCain isn't the "perfect" candidate, but he is by far the better of the two.

I'll third that amen. Every vote for an independant, or off-party candidate gives Obama a greater chance of winning. IMHO, of all election years, this is the most important to keep the more evil one out.

I'd never hire someone with this amount of arrogance, with so little experience to back it up, to run any part of a company I owned much less to be the POTUS. I wouldn't have him in charge of the company newsletter.:kk2:

Make your vote count. Obama could end up our president with a democratic dominated congress, with no checks and balances in place in our system....and a fool named Pelosi to fall in line behind anything Obama wants.

Please, make your vote count.

As a conservative, I'll gladly throw my vote to Obama so we can finally eliminate what's left of the fake Republican conservative party.

No thanks. The world is full of evil and I'll vote for the lesser over the greater every time rather than throw my vote to a 'never was' and thus allowing the greater evil to win.

Rage

Amen. It's amazing some people can't see the horrible damage they do by throwing away their votes on can't wins. When it gets right down to the wire, those people do a horrible and unforgiveable disservice to America.
