What brand of Flashlights does everyone use? I can't afford the Surefires, is there something comparable to them? Thanks in advance!

For cheapness, try the River Rock led lights at Target. The AA model is lousy, however, but the AAA version rocks hard for a mere ten bucks. I have several Surefire's, but the AAA version is the one I use most. The LED lanterns are pretty awesome too for the price. You should check out www.candlepowerforums.com, but be forewarned...your brain will hurt after reading about so many flashlights!

Go to Chinamart and spend $18 on one of the Dorcy luxeon metal gear lights.
1watt luxeon LED, very bright and lasts 3-4 hours on 1 set of rechargeables.

Hard to beat for the price.

Streamlight brand is good. They have the public safety market, with the exception of the SWAT teams which is virtually owned by Surefire. Streamlight makes hundreds of different lights for all uses.

I personally like the Streamlight Twin-task models and the Underwater Kinetics UK eLED light.

The eLED is particularly nice as it uses a hi-power LED and will run for 12 hours off four alkaline AA batteries. Small flat fits in you back pocket nicely and I believe is water proof. About $25

Check out Brightguy flashlights, it's a good website.

Save your $

Invest your money in a couple of good, high-power flashlights, but also buy the cheap Eveready ones. Target sells them 2 per pack, with batteries. Put one in each room of your house. Label them with some masking tape and show everyone in the house where they're kept in their respective rooms. This way everyone knows exactly where they are when an outage occurs. remind everyone to return flashlights to their proper room if they find it someplace else.

I have several two D cell flashlights that were a big seller at the local hardware store a few years back. They are hanging at each door exiting the house and to the garage. Near the computer are at least three small battery lanterns or flashlights. The Maglite with three C or D cells are near the bed and what I grab if something goes bump in the night. The vehicles each have a maglite dedicated for that purpose.

I mostly have Mag Lights. A couple of the 2D cell for around the house, a 3 cell by the doors, and a 3 cell by the bed.

I usually carry a Mini-Mag on my belt, cause it's what I already own, and I second the Nite Ize LED kit! Makes the factory bulb look pale IMHO. And the push button on the end cap is a big bonus.

Got a surplus GI 2D with the angled head, but I'm not crazy about it. And I've been testing a Brinkman LED headlamp I picked up at Wal-Mart. Really a lot brighter than I thought it would be, but I think I'm going to get one of the sturdier "sport" models, as this one isn't holding up to the abuse me and the kids have given it.

Want get one of those 1 million plus candle power rechargable lanterns next.

I have all sorts of flashlights (including 10 different types of the "million" candlepower big handheld lights). The one's I like best are the Luxeon flashlights (I have 1W, 3W and 5W versions). Some were priced up to $150. (I also have several of the large and small Petromax lanterns -- plus other stuff.)

The one I seem to use the most is the Brinkmann 1Watt Luxeon headlamp from WallyWorld at $18. I also like the Dorcy 1W Luxeon, also from Wallyworld at the same price.

BTW, Except for the "million" candlepower lights, I've switched exclusively to LED lights and mini-fluorescents for flashlights. I hate having bulbs go out at a bad time.

Another vote for this light. Also there is another 18 dollar light as well.. the Maxfire LX also at walmart.. Good light.

I have surefires and this light is almost as good.. Its super bright, super clear and uses the exact same batteries.

Its a good deal.

Flashlights

I'm not a flashlight "junkie" by any means, but we have Mag-lites, Inovas and Surefires at home. The Surefires are very nice, of course, but mega-pricey. Surefire has a Nitrolon model that is maybe around $30. The relatively expensive lithium batteries that Surefires use would also be a consideration for you.

A couple of years ago we were at the beach and went out to the beach at night to see if we could see the July 4 fireworks. I took the Surefire with me and did a quick flash on a few people and areas...it sure did light up the night. Very impressive. No wonder they claim that it will temporarily blind an aggressor in a night situation.

Been a member at CPF for a while and trying to answer the same questions about what lights. The answer for me is different lights for different purposes.

My everday carry light is a Digilight T-9, a "Surefirelike" light, but about three times brighter than my Surefire G2, and about 30 percent longer. Still small enough to fit in a pocket of my jacket without noticing it. They're about 50 bucks from http://www.blackrifles.com

For longer run times I have several of the Nuwai 1-watt Luxeons that run off a pair of rechargeable NiMH AA batteries, and some of their 1/2 watts that are tiny and run off a pair of AAA's. A google search for Nuwai flashlights will turn up a ton of resources. They're well-made little lights, machined aluminum, O-ring sealed, DC-DC converters which greatly extends the run time and brightness, even in the $10 1/2 watt modes. The 1-watt models are about $20.

For when I need to reach out and touch someone, I built 3 of the "Roar of the Pelican" lights, the 4-D, 2-D and 2-C. They run off different battery solutions and have different run times, but they are incredibly bright. My T-9 is about 3 times as bright as the Surefire G-2, the ROP lights are 3-4 times as bright as the T-9. I can easily light up someone at my back property line, about 600-700 feet from the house with one of these. This is a fairly simple mod, the 4-D is incredibly simple, just replace the batteries with 6 sub-C NiMH batteries, replace the bulb, lens and reflector, and you'll have an 800 lumen light for about $100 that is rechargeable and runs for an hour.

A couple of good links for dealers are http://www.amondotech.com and http://www.lighthound.com

I also put a Nite-Ize bulb in a mini mag;) , $4.95 at Wal-Mart. I think that maglites are to beat. I have used them for years. Costco sells a 2 pack for $20, contains a 2 D cell and an AA.
Magelite is comming out with there own l.e.d. soon, should be a good one.

Flashlights

I have over 100. The Coast brand from Costco is a very handy and good light. I Carried a mini mag for about 20 years. I now use only the Coast brand, much better light than Mag. Converted Mags are OK but will not light objects very far away, Coast will.

I use to have 2D cell MagLights in all of my regular applications, Tool Box, pantry, car, bedside... But I have changed over to the Streamlight 4AA. I searched around and got 5 of them for $20 each, but I forgot the website I ordered them from (opps) here is a site that has them for $26

http://www.flashlights.com/price/propoly.html#4aa_led

They are one heck of a bright LED light and will run for days on a set of batteries.
