Another good one to have on hand is doxycycline.

From the CDC website

Tick Bite Prophylaxis. In areas that are highly endemic for Lyme disease, a single prophylactic dose of doxycycline (200 mg for adults or 4.4 mg/kg for children of any age weighing less than 45 kg) may be used to reduce the risk of acquiring Lyme disease after the bite of a high risk tick bite.

I had the same question, regarding whether or not taking these for human use is actually safe (?).... has anyone here used them already or are you all just assuming they’re the same?

I’m looking at these sites, myself.

Doxy is what they often prescribe for pneumonia or if secondary bacterial infections don’t clear up with first round antibiotic treatment. I had to take it last year... nasty little drug, that Doxy is. “Can” cause stomach pain, diarrhea, permanent discoloring of the teeth. I wouldn’t take it again unless I have to.

Another side affect of doxy can be sensitivity to sunlight.

I've taken the fish amoxycilin 500 mg and given it to friends who've taken it with no ill effects. I've also taken the doxy with no ill effects. I read somewhere years ago that the only difference between human antibiotics and fish/bird antibiotics is that the animal version has fewer fillers than the human versions. I don't remember the source of that info, but I found the source and info credible at the time.

I've used Fish Mox (amoxicillin) for several years now to deal with sore throats and keep them from turning into bronchitis with no ill effects whatsoever. Works just as well as the Amoxil my pediatrician always prescribed for me when I was a kid.

Thank you for replies. I feel better knowing you’ve all tried them.

The main reason I asked is, at work I casually mentioned them for human use in an emergency (wink) and about got eyerolled and laughed out of them room.
I was really embarrassed.

You might want to look at healthypets.com for their fish antibiotics. I compared their prices with the other site listed in the 2nd post and it's cheaper ($15.00 less) for the 3 bottles I put in my cart.

I have bought from them in the past and never had a problem.

Anyone know the shelf life of these?
Years, if kept cool and dry. Read the bottle label, and follow the storage instructions! If it says "controlled room temperature", they mean it. Aim for the cooler part of that range if possible, but don't assume that refrigeration or freezing is "better".

This link shows the current expiration date of the meds they are selling (from post 2).

https://fishmoxfishflex.com/pages/medicine-expiration-dates

In my case, it was accurate compared to what was printed on the bottles.
Amoxicillin tablets are 2 years from date of manufacture.

Expiration Dates

Last Updated & Shipment Received: 12/18/2019
Wondering what the expiration date is on one of the fish antibiotics we carry and how to know if the company you are buying from has good expiration dates? Check our fish antibiotic expiration date page here. We update it every time we get a new shipment. That way you can compare with the medicine you have bought from other websites (but hopefully from ours) to make sure you received the newest batch of medicine.

There was some talk of changes being made as many caught on to the fact that lots of people are using them for themselves. I do not know what if anything came of that talk.

I’m looking at these sites, myself.

They are made on the same pharmaceutical productions lines as the human meds are, just put in a different bottle. There are plenty of Doctors I know that tell people about them and their use. DoomandBloom.net ( The website of Dr. Joe Alton and Amy Alton, ARNP ), has the link to the one I suggested above ( fishmoxfishflex.com ). They also have two good books that I would suggest: "The Survival Medicine Handbook", and "Altons Antibiotics and Infectious Disease: The Layman's Guide To Available Antibacterials in Austere Settings". I also would suggest checking out their youtube channel as they have a bunch of good info up there.
_____

And as far as expiration dates, the ones on any medicine's label are a VERY safe limit. The DoD did a study (Shelf Life Extension Program, SLEP) back in the 80s that proved that most meds are 100% fine for 5-20 years past that date.

Or, put in civilian speak:
What are Expiration Dates on Medications?

Doxy is also a first or second choice for almost all bacterial bioweapons, including Anthrax.

I ordered some fish doxycycline pills from post 17.
It's more insurance in case the amoxicillin isn't strong enough or someone gets a bad tick bite.

Fish meds almost certainly come from china, so I decided not to wait any longer.

Let us not forget AllDayChemist as a supplier, real “human” medicine, although it’s probably the same stuff, it is at least labeled for human use.
Yes, that was my first choice but they only take certain forms of payment, nobevthat o have , such as bitcoin, and others I wasn’t familiar with... but they will take the routing number from your back account ... so I did t follow through with the order. I don’t ya e any checks and wasn’t ready to figure out the whole routing number thing. Was hoping for a simple PayPal or vise form of payment.

Sigh...

I received the doxycyline yesterday and the date code was 06/2023 as expected.
This and the amoxycillin are the only antibiotics I plan to store in case of pharmacy shortage.

edit: I noticed that prices increased since Wednesday on doxycyline, metronidazole, clindamycin, and azithromyacin. Prices did not increase on the older, more common amoxycillin and sulfa. This is from the one place, I didn't check other sources or distributors. These were the antibiotics listed/mentioned in the video in post 21.

Just checked ADC and all the prices were drastically increased from the last time I looked. I'm guessing it's a supply and demand thing. But since I am actually ordering today to help my very old dog with an infection, pet antibiotics work.

Oh, playing on the ADC and did the search a different way, and found the ones in the lower price point range. Hmm...

California Vet Supply has a large variety of antibiotics that are cheaper than the two websites listed in this thread. Free shipping on orders of $49 or more. I'd suggest getting some Sulfamethoxazole, aka generic Bactrim, which is what's used for Staph infections. I have a good stock of Amoxicillin, Penicillin, Ciprofloxacin, and Sulfamethoxazole. I do need to order some Cephalexin, as that is what the vet prescribed for a cyst on my dog's back. I'd also like to find a source for Azithromycin. The first link in this thread carries it, but is out of stock, and very expensive when they do have it.

The fish pills and capsules are the same USP pharmacy quality antibiotics as human, and the pill/capsules are the same shape, size and markings as the equivalent human meds. You can check on Drugs.com pill finder.
