Food eating food past expiration date

i found this website that tells how long food is ok to eat past the date on the package.

it is a bit on the conservative side as i have gone past many dates listed on the site for many things (not everything), and everything was just fine, but it is still a good site to view

I've used bottled cranberry juice a year past the Best By date and it was still just fine.

Years ago, I used to take a little tupperware cup of orange juice to work for morning break and in the summer the lid of the container would get all puffed up and the juice would taste real zingy, but it was still okay. I used to call it my 9:30 Screwdriver. Went real good with my sandwich of chopped boiled egg rolled up in a piece of soggy toast.

i have a friend that is very meticulous about the date on the containers of things. i told them that those are mostly for marketing, and that many goods are still just fine for years past. i have eaten canned veggies (storebought) like 5 years past the date on the can, and they tasted just like the other can i opened that had not expired. they tasted like they should.

14APRIL2020 JUST opened a canned ham Celebrity , 12 oz, dated 4april 2015.........STILL GREAT...canned meat holds up real good.most everything does
EXCEPT........I HAVE HAD BAD LUCK WITH TOMATOES AND FRUIT...........TOMATOES WILL ROT OUT A CAN IN A YEAR OR 2

IF you want to store tomatoes..........you need to buy them in jars or can your own in jars
ANYTHING canned with vinegar will only stay crunchy for a year or two ...then they will get mushe (soft) ..........you can still eat them....they just will not be as crisp.

CANNED MILK ...none i have had lasted over 6 months past the best buy date in good shape.

I eat a lot of 'expired' foods. DD went to clean a woman's house and said "Mom, all the foods were not expired!! I mean, how is that?!" No big deal. If it passes the smell test, I will at least try it. For the most part, the worst thing would be that the food is not as nutritious, and maybe not as visually appealing.

Food really doesn't "expire". Like moldy said, it may loose texture and nutrition. When I volunteered at the local emergency food pantry we had USDA guidelines about what we could give out past the best by dates. For canned foods with an intact can with no rust, bulge or severe dent; high acid foods 1 year past the date and low acid foods 5 years past the date. Dairy could go out 7 days past the best by date. Boxed foods with no inner wrapping 1 year past the date, but boxed things with inner wrapping could go out 2 years past the date. Baby foods and mayo couldn't go out even 1 day past the date.

Things we couldn't give out per the above guides went into a box that the volunteers could take. I've had a fair bit of that which was just fine beyond those time limits. Also like moldy said, the sniff test is a good indicator.

I ate a can of mandarin oranges the other day and the best buy date was 2015, he that's only almost 6 years, what the hay. It tasted fine, although it was not my favorite brand.

I have a flat of 12 cans of corned beef hash that we won't eat. I saved it, though. It is at least 10 yrs. old. I was having trouble getting my dog to take his heartworm med the other night. I tried everything. I decided to open a can of that hash to mix his medication up in. When I opened it, it was good as new. It passed the smell test, and still looked fresh. Dog loved it! I would not have been afraid to eat it myself.

pets always thinking I'm opening a can of pet food whenever I open up a can of corned beef. I'll eat it, no problems there, it's really good sliced dredged in egg and then flour and deep fat fried. Heart attack on a bun right there oh yeah. It also makes a good barter item.

You must have a different type than me. The kind I have is like mush when you empty it out in a pot. You have to stir and simmer it. Looks like dog food. I think you have the type that looks like a can of Spam. I've never tried any of that.

I have eaten tinned meats that are ten years old with no problem and a few months ago ate up the last of my Y2K mac and cheese boxes that had a 1996 date on it. No problem at all.
We had some canned salmon purchased in 2011.
Still kicking.

I am eating my early preps .Canned goods from 2010 to 2013.I have eaten soups, meat vegetables &even scary tomatoes of various types .So far only 2 or 3 percent of tomatoes and fruits have failed. Now I freeze dry so cooking most of the fresh foods eat a little F/D the rest. And live off the Canned goods. Also 7 to 10 year old Canned meat from Walmart. Keystone I believe it is called.

This too shall pass.
Recently I used up the last two quarts of home-canned chicken for dog food -- it was canned fifteen years ago. But it was still good, and I wouldn't have been afraid to use it for us, I just prefer canned red meat over canned chicken.

Just a warning: You can NOT tell if something has botulism in it by smelling it. You may be able to identify other spoilage, but the reason botulism is so dangerous is that you can't see or smell it. If anything is questionable, it should be boiled for several minutes (at least twenty minutes, I think, but look it up if you want to be sure).

I only worry about canned foods if the can is no longer sealed, has rusted through, or something like that. Otherwise I ignore the dates.

I ate some spam this week from a can with a best used by date of 2011. It was fine.

The only spam that has gone bad was a year or 2 old. I didn't need to open the can to tell it was bad.

The same happened to me. I had Spam stored that was almost 10 yrs. old, and it was still good. Then, one day, I noticed some cans that were only a couple of years old that had bulging tops. It was several cans, too. Threw them out. I've finally got all the older cans used up.
