Harvest Easier Way To Deal With Collards

It is early March and the weather is warming up a little and the collard greens are about ready to bolt.

I started pulling them all up last week, a lot of them. There are too many to deal with. I cleaned and cooked a 5-gallon bucket full. I needed a break.

I took bunches of leaves, stacked them together so I could fit them into plastic grocery bags, and put them in the freezer.

Eureka, I took out a frozen bag and started breaking the leaves off of the stems. They broke off. I didn't have to tear them or cut them and in less than five minutes they were in the pot ready to cook.

You reminded me....back in the late 20th century, my mother would pick turnip greens and collards in huge batches. She'd run the dishwasher once empty to "get the left over soap out of it", then pack it with the greens and run a rinse with hot water. Remove them, trashing the stems, put in tupperware or plastic bags and throw them in the freezer.

I seem to have lived through it with no ill effects and she could do a huge amount of greens in a day.

LOL! I use a top loader washing machine to do snap beans... works great!

My wife has been canning Collard's the last two days. She is cutting up a batch right now.

She will be canning a Bach while we are gone to church the timing will work just right.

On another not we use a Carey (Nesco) Electric Smart Pressure Canner & Cooker Model DPC 9SS it sure helps with saving time.

If you don’t have one look into getting one.

We have used it on a lot of things.

Ya' ll are funny, If I put collards in my dishwasher or washing machine it would probably break them or screw up the plumbing.

I plant my collards in wood chips and cover them with row covers until it gets cold. They are clean bug-free and don't get sprayed or dusted with anything except frost.
