The Media is Left Aghast and Shocked by Donald Trump’s Bizarre CIA Speech

By Hrafnkell Haraldsson on Sat, Jan 21st, 2017 at 4:32 pm

"In front of a memorial to CIA employees who died in the line of service, Trump talked about being on the cover of Time magazine a lot."

Reactions to Donald Trump’s bizarre speech at the CIA earlier today began to come in immediately, and it is safe to say the operative word is “aghast.” As The Plum Line’s Greg Sargent tweeted,

BuzzFeed‘s Chris Geidner was especially shocked by Trump’s fulsome self-praise:

As did Mother Jones‘ David Corn:

Other reactions were no more favorable, with Vox‘s Matthew Yglesias taking note of Trump’s point of departure, an alternate reality:

As noted by Joy Reid and David Rothkopf, Trump bussed in his sycophantic cheering section again:

As a hint of what’s to come, Trump’s performance today speaks volumes, as The New York Times‘ Maggie Haberman explained with a resigned “here we go”:

Donald Trump did himself no favors today through his erratic behavior at CIA headquarters, other than providing himself with further ammunition to throw at the media for accurately reporting on how bizarre his speech was, and how offensive it was to stand in front of a memorial to those who died in service to their country to brag about himself and wage war on that same media.

Who cares how the media reacts? It was a good speech, no doubt intended to start to secure his relationship with the CIA.
His speech starts at about the 25 minute mark of the video.

He was very well received by the CIA employees in attendance, somebody said 400 was all they had room for.

Thank you for the post. It does not start until the 25 min mark. Mike Pence introduces President Trump. He says no one is more dedicated to make the US safe and secure again and he is a great strategic thinker. Trump says that this is his first stop officially as President. He supports the CIA and intelligence community. He says he is so very much behind them and will give them so much backing that they will say stop it, it is too much. The CIA has been restrained from using their full abilities. We must get rid of ISIS and radical Islamic terrorism. It is such a great evil. He has been seeing ,6,7,8 people for each position. Then he met Mike Pompao? and he was the only one he wanted. Number one in his class in west point and number one in Harvard Law school. Every one respects him. So he cancelled all the other meetings after meeting him.
We have to start winning again. When he was young, we use to win so many things. Not anymore. When we went into Iraq, we got out of it wrong. I did not want to go into Iraq, but we got out wrong, we should have kept the oil. To the winners go the spoils. If we kept the oil, ISIS would not have it to wage their war. The media is full of the most dishonest people in the world. They lied about how many people showed up for the inauguration. They said we had 250,000 people, but we had that just in front of us, this did not include how packed the mall and streets where. They also lied about me removing the Martin Luther King bust. They said I took it down, but it was right there, a camera man was standing in front of it. The retraction was so small, maybe one tiny line, almost unseen. He says he loves and respects the CIA and they will be in the front of the fight against ISIS.
I have reworded slightly, but is close to what he said. I watched it, then typed as he spoke. There is a lot of fluff that I did not write.

The take away when I listened to it was "I love honesty" after a blistering of the dishonest media. Hope the CIA could read through the lines, I'm sure his soon to be director understands. He expects anything coming from them to be the God's honest truth, nothing less.

Trump blames ‘political games’ for delaying Pompeo’s confirmation as CIA chief
By Lindsay Wise
lwise@mcclatchydc.com

WASHINGTON
At a visit to the Central Intelligence Agency on Saturday, President Donald Trump took a shot at Democrats, saying they were playing politics with the confirmation of Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo, his pick to head the agency.

An objection from three Democratic senators delayed the U.S. Senate’s vote to confirm Pompeo as the CIA’s new director Friday.

Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon, Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut objected Friday to what they said was “a rushed confirmation” of Pompeo. They asked to push the vote off until Monday to allow senators to debate the nomination.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., eventually agreed, but not before bashing Democrats for leaving the CIA post unfilled over the weekend.
Trump isn’t very happy about the delay, either.

“They’re playing little political games,” Trump told the 400 CIA employees assembled in the lobby of the agency’s building on Saturday.

He lavished praise on Pompeo, who had accompanied him to the CIA.

“You have somebody who’s coming on who’s extraordinary,” Trump said. “Everything he’s done has been a home run.”

Trump said he’d known he wanted to hire Pompeo right away. He was so confident, in fact, that he’d canceled eight other interviews for the job, he said.

“I met Mike Pompeo and he was the only guy I met,” Trump said. “I didn’t want to meet anybody else. I said cancel them, cancel them.”

When Trump told House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., that he’d chosen Pompeo to lead the CIA, he said, Ryan was the only person who wasn’t totally thrilled.

“He said, ‘I don’t want to lose this guy,’ ” Trump said.

“But you will be getting a total star. You will be getting a total gem,” he said of Pompeo. “He’s just a gem.”

Trump also said the media had wrongly reported that he was at war with the intelligence community over reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin had tried to influence the presidential election.

That couldn’t be further from the truth, he said.

“I just really wanted to say, ‘I love you. I respect you,’ ” Trump told the CIA employees. “There’s nobody I respect more. You’re going to do a fantastic job. We’re going to start winning again.”

I just watched the speech. It was a "meet & greet" one, not a big policy speech. It was designed to let them see that he's a regular guy and on their side. And NOT A TELEPROMPTER IN SIGHT. 0bunghole couldn't string four words together without one. But what the "press" has shown in their "critique" is how they're going to cover everything Trump does. There will NEVER be a good thing said about anything he says or anything he does. So Americans would be well advised to set the media on "ignore" for the the next four years. Libtards will lap it all up like nectar of the gods, know the MSM is "their peeps."

No doubt, there must be quite a few people who are worried. It seems POTUS T has refined ways to ferret out dissenters and spies in his long career, and he will be using the same tactics in his new job-they should be afraid. I do like his emphasis on truth, the American people are sick to death of being lied to, the above "news" reports on his speech to the CIA is a prime example. I hope he forces them all out of business, the pussyhats are not in large enough numbers to keep those media bums afloat for the next 4 years.

I've been hoping that POTUS T will encourage several entrepreneurs to start up genuine factual news media outlets in print and on air, they would be a raging success if they had his endorsement, instant billionaires.

"We have your name. We have your number. We are embedded in your institutions. We are inside the newsrooms, and that is going to be our next target."

I am struck by the brazen contempt Brennan showed in his public comments.

Trump's speech was brilliant. I don't agree with him on his CIA nominee, he is a little too fascist for my taste, but I can live with it.

It is yet another example of how Obama damaged the USA. It is also clear that the CIA rot is in the upper level. The reaction of the 400 CIA employees tells me they support Trump completely. And Trump is right, we do have to exterminate ISIS from the face of the earth.

Ex-CIA chief Brennan bashes Trump over speech during CIA visit

By Ryan Browne, CNN

Washington (CNN)Former CIA Director John Brennan is "deeply saddened and angered" at President Donald Trump after the commander in chief addressed CIA employees at their headquarters in Langley, Virginia, on Saturday, Brennan's former deputy chief of staff says.

Trump spent much of his speech -- which he gave in front of a memorial wall that honors the 117 CIA officers who have fallen in the line of duty -- focusing on the size of the crowd size at his inauguration, his appearance on magazine covers and saying he "has a running war with the media." SLANTED DIG ONE

"Former CIA Director Brennan is deeply saddened and angered at Donald Trump's despicable display of self-aggrandizement in front of CIA's Memorial Wall of Agency heroes," Nick Shapiro said in a statement. "Brennan says that Trump should be ashamed of himself." ASHAMED? DESPICABLE? BRENNAN IS THE ONE WHO IS DESPICABLE AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR ALLOWING MILITANT ISLAM TO MURDER INNOCENT PEOPLE ON HIS WATCH.

One source who attended Trump's appearance said many people there were troubled by the political aspect of the remarks, in which the president speculated about how many people in the room may have voted for him.

"We are not political in that way," the source said. "Talking about whether we voted for Trump is offensive and foreign to us by the president ... Many people felt used and awkward throughout. Of course there was applause, but it was uncomfortable."
SERIOUSLY? THE CIA WASN'T POLITICAL WHEN IT FAKED RUSSIAN HACKING THE ELECTION REPORTS?

Trump's visit, his first official one since becoming President, was seen as part of a bid to mend fences after he strained relations with intelligence officials by repeatedly casting doubt on their assessment that Russia had carried out cyberattacks during the campaign. He also suggested that the intelligence community was leaking information about the investigation to the press, taking to Twitter to slam Brennan, a 25-year veteran of the agency.
The President sought to send a message of support to the intelligence community following the turbulent transition, telling the 300 employees in attendance, "I am so behind you." IT WAS 400 CIA EMPLOYEES WITH THOUSANDS MORE UNABLE TO GET IN. LIE NUMBER TWO

"I am with you 1,000%," Trump said after receiving intelligence briefings from top agency officials.
"There is nobody that feels stronger about the intelligence community and the CIA than Donald Trump," he said to applause, adding at the end of his remarks, "I love you. I respect you. We're going to start winning again, and you're going to be leading the charge."
Trump blamed the "dishonest" media for the perceived rift with the intelligence community.
Many observers had commented on the unmatched level of skepticism Trump had directed at the US intelligence apparatus, and other speakers Saturday addressed the relationship between presidents and the intelligence community.
"CIA's relationship with the president has been essential to our nation's strength and security," acting director Meroe Park said prior to introducing Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
"I can assure you this new President and our entire team recognizes and appreciates the sacrifices of all of the men and women of the intelligence community of the United States of America," Pence told the assembled group.

Trump echoed Pence's praise but drew the ire of Brennan as well as Democrats for using the platform to address political issues entirely unrelated to the CIA.
The backlash from a agency veteran like Brennan could undermine Trump's latest push to foster a strong relationship between the White House and the intelligence community.
REALLY? AFTER THE CIA TRIED TO OVERTURN THE ELECTION RESULTS?

The President did take a moment to acknowledge the memorial behind him, saying, "The wall behind me is very, very special."
Trump also spoke about his desire to "eradicate radical Islamic terrorism ... off the face of the earth. This is evil."
And he said about Iraq, "We should have kept the oil. Maybe we'll have another chance."
But Trump's off-the-cuff remarks veered into political territory at times, something not typically seen in addresses to intelligence professionals who pride themselves on being non-partisan and which drew a quick attack from Democrats. CNN WRITES THIS WITH A STRAIGHT FACE? TRUMP IS CORRECT TO CALL THEM DISHONEST.

The CIA audience was separated into two sections: a main area of all agency staff and a separate section directly in front of the stage that consisted of senior agency leadership, including agents. During Trump's address, the senior leadership stood the entire time. When Trump began drifting into political topics, the main crowd broke into cheers and applause at points. The senior leadership remained stoic, and did not applaud the political lines. THE SENIOR LEADERSHIP IS WHERE THE FAKE NEWS STORY OF RUSSIAN HACKING CAME FROM. CNN HAS TO ADMIT TRUMP WAS CHEERED LOUDLY AND OFTEN BUT THEY CHOKE ON IT.

The president also repeatedly slammed the media, saying, "I have a running war with the media" and accusing news organizations of misrepresenting the size of the crowds at his inauguration speech on Friday.
He talked about the number of times he has been on the cover of Time magazine.

The ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee issued a statement shortly after Trump's visit ripping the new president.
"While standing in front of the stars representing CIA personnel who lost their lives in the service of their country -- hallowed ground -- Trump gave little more than a perfunctory acknowledgment of their service and sacrifice," Rep. Adam Schiff said, adding that Trump "meandered through a variety of other topics unrelated to intelligence."
"He will need to do more than use the agency memorial as a backdrop if he wants to earn the respect of the men and women who provide the best intelligence in the world," Schiff added.
F#$%%% THAT DEMOCRATIC FOOL AND FRAUD
The visit comes amid questions regarding the status of Trump's choice to run the agency, Rep. Mike Pompeo.
The CIA, currently being led by Park, is lacking a permanent chief as the Senate has delayed Pompeo's confirmation vote until Monday, with Democrats citing concerns about his positions on surveillance and other issues.
Pompeo, who was at the CIA with Trump, has encountered some controversy after he submitted responses to a Senate questionnaire where he said he would consider bringing back waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation measures under certain circumstances.
Republicans have slammed the delay, with Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas issuing a statement, saying, "The Democrats are obstructing the nomination of Mike Pompeo as CIA director for no good reason."
"I hope the jihadists take the weekend off from trying to kill Americans," Cotton added.
CNN's Jeff Zeleny and Kevin Liptak contributed to this story

I was waiting to see if anyone picked up on what Trump said in his speech to the CIA about columns in the room? Pay close attention to what he said here;

I will tell you, final time -- although I will say it, when you let in your thousands of other people that have been trying to come in -- because I am coming back -- we're going to have to get you a larger room. (Applause.) We may have to get you a larger room. You know? And maybe, maybe, it will be built by somebody that knows how to build, and we won't have columns. (Laughter.) You understand that? (Applause.) We get rid of the columns.

I doubt that many in the media understood what he was saying here but those 'leaders' of the CIA just had the gauntlet thrown down to them and Trump had the balls to go right into the bears den to do it.

He wasn't talking about columns in the room he was talking about 5th columns within the agency. Words mean something here.

Fifth column

A fifth column is any group of people who undermine a larger group—such as a nation or a besieged city—from within, usually in favor of an enemy group or nation. The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack. This term is also extended to organized actions by military personnel.

Trump's comment on 'columns' might have gone over the head of a few of the CIA analysts but the leaders of the CIA sitting directly in front of him got the message and knowing something about the past history of the CIA it's obvious to me that he did not make an off the cuff comment here. He not only said 'You understand that' as to what he was saying but then followed up with 'we get rid of the columns'. He went right into the nest of vipers and laid down the law and what he did was another chess move. The leaders of the CIA can't accomplish much without the analysts and the lower foot soldiers of the agency and Trump gave these people a pep talk and built them up about how important they are but then threw down the gauntlet to the career department heads.
