Saint Distaff Day is coming!
St. Distaff Day is a medieval English joke. Saint Distaff never existed. But 7 January was an unofficial medieval celebration, observed the day that women went back to household work after twelve days of celebrating Christmas. Men returned to work on the Monday (sometimes called Plough Monday) immediately following St. Distaff day.
Spinning was one very important aspect of household work, and the distaff an important tool in spinning. The distaff is the stick carried by women to support extra fibres (usually flax or wool) while spinning. So it is an appropriate 'female' tool for a 'saint' to be named after.

As Thor has his Hammer, Frig's symbol is the Distaff. She is Odin's wife and (among other things) Goddess of the homestead. The distaff is the quintessential symbol of the traditional women's arts.
