Diesel fuel

I was just blessed with a pristine 1984 mercedes 300TD garage kept , 180,000 miles, NO leaks or rust ANYWHERE and I was wondering if the new "clean"diesel fuel is agreeable with the older ones and if not can they be "enriched".

Yes, the new ultra low sulphur diesel will work in the older diesel engines. Sulphur acted as a lubricant for the injector pumps (from what I've been told) but was replaced by some other lube.

Most of us old time diesel drivers add a little 2-cycle oil to the new fuel, about 8 oz to a tank, just for peace of mind on lubricating the pump. I like the Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube, but at $8 a quart, it is cost prohibitive. I use it only when changing fuel filters.

Enjoy the 300TD. Great automobile.

If you're in daytona, collect a bit of used fryer oil, settle and filter it, and use it as a lube additive as well. Or filtered waste motor oil.

You can probably run in excess of 50% WVO year round in Daytona. Saves a LOT of money, once you buy the barrels and filter and pump. Plus WVO will REALLY clena your tank.

You should, of course, always carry a spare fuel filter in the car.
