In the IRS code and in all 50 states, churches are seen as automatically "tax-exempt", whether or not they are in corporate form or they file for 501(c)3 status. Even the IRS recognizes that churches don't pay taxes on incoming contributions and neither do they pay property taxes, regardless of whether or not they've "filed" any paperwork with the IRS, other FedGov organizations, state or local governments included.
For now. If the church meets the requirements for 501(c)(3) they are exempt. But I just looked it up on the IRS website and my concern is that the government might change the requirements for 501(c)(3) making the churches adopt practices that are abhorrent to the churches.

"Churches (including integrated auxiliaries and conventions or associations of churches) that meet the requirements of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are automatically considered tax exempt and are not required to apply for and obtain recognition of exempt status from the IRS. Donors are allowed to claim a charitable deduction for donations to a church that meets the section 501(c)(3) requirements even though the church has neither sought nor received IRS recognition that it is tax exempt. In addition, because churches and certain other religious organizations are not required to file an annual return or notice with the IRS, they are not subject to automatic revocation of exemption for failure to file. See Annual Return Filing Exceptions for a complete list of organizations that are not required to file."

I think I can...
I was planning to join -- just haven't gotten around to tracing/proving all the documentation. I know it's there, in multiple lines. But now I don't think I will, until I hear they've straightened it out, literally.

If the leaders of a long-lived organization celebrating liberty, patriotism, and those who fought and gave everything to preserve it quit so readily, I'm thinking the organization is already dead.

Haha..I didn't even know about the Jamestowne Society, though I know I've stumbled across some early Jamestown ancestors in my genealogical stumblings. I see on their website that the group gives a convenient list of names with which to cross-reference. Will keep it in mind.

All this stuff is mostly a matter of who jumped first and got over here early, Doesn't make people "special" in any real way. A bunch of mine came in the early 1600's - family oddballs, non-inheriting younger sons, practicing an illegal religion (lotsa Scottish Quakers), or looking for glory, earned (not inherited) prosperity and a mission in life, like ggggg++grand-father Miles Standish. The early-birds were self-made in the Colonies, and not overly fond of living in England/Europe under the thumb of their laws (obviously), so a good deal of the independent hard-cores naturally fought on the Patriot side in the War.
You're right about not being special, ...wait.....except for me. LOL

The Jamestowne Society is very picky, in the extreme. If you want in.

For instance my 7X great grand father married Argol Yardley's daugther. Argol (spelled a couple of ways) was the son of Col. George Yeardley, and was born in Jamestowne.

In the 6 volume genealogy book "Of Pure and Persons" Argoll and Francis Knight are listed as not having any children (no issue). That is the genealogy book that is accepted by the Jamestowne Society. Or maybe it was Anne Custis, of the line of Robert E. Lee's wife. I'd have to look it up to be sure, but anyway........

In the genealogy book "Daughters of the Colonist" Argoll and Francis/Anne are listed as having two children a son and his sister my grandmother. Which is not accepted by the Jamestowne Society.

The explanation for the difference is Argoll and Francis/Anne have my grandfather listed as someone who inherited their property. IMHO it would be odd to leave it to someone not a family member. Or maybe he was listed as executor of the estate. Again odd, if not a family member.

Been a while since I looked through all that, so memory may be off.

So you can get a lot of info from or through them, but as you run rabbits, some of the source material may not be accepted.

BTW both of those books/volumes are at the library. And you would need access to the entire volume to narrow it down to your ancestor.

Hope that helps.

The DAR group I belong to has in meeting in a couple of weeks. I did not plan to attend, but now I will. And I plan to bring up this subject. I'll let y'all know what the comments and actions are and if there are any others who feel the way that I do.

This is northern MN - deep dem area. But it is also an area that is more conservative in their thinking. Most people I know vote dem because the unions tell them to, but also because "that's the way we've always done it." However, I know from talking to some of them that they don't like the way the dem party is going and they do NOT like all this "woke" shit! They believe in God....

I’ll go back further, and this is even more unpopular. Giving women the vote laid the foundation for this country’s destruction. That’s because almost all women function entirely by feelz rather than thoughtful analysis. And feelz is what has brought us to the very edge of destruction.
Not surprising that you have this opinion, since you hate women. Yes, many women function by their feelings, but "all" is an incorrect assumption. And men are not exempt from the feelings thing either.

You should think about it.

1) it's a lot easier to get in, and the records are more recent
2) it's a dying club because it is not socially accepted anymore, not the statues and renaming of forts.

The Daughters of Confederate Veterans is really more active than the SCV.

Don't know about the Yankee side of it. There are members here on both sides, if you're interested PM me.

My great great grandfather became an orphan due to the CW. I've got documentation (census records) that prove he and the sister immediately older than him were raised in a CW veterans orphanage despite their mother still being alive. They would have starved to death had it not been for the community banding together to help raise all the orphans around Clarksville, TN that were made that way from the battles that took place.

I'm satisfied with that knowledge and to have helped other family researchers untangle some of the resulting tree branch splits. I'm not sure joining that club so many generations out from the event would really do anything for me or anyone else for that matter though I don't have problems with people that enjoy that sort of thing as a hobby.

That's cool and understandable. No problem for sure. But........

It's not just a hobby, (but can be) The SCV do lots of things for Confederate vets. Confederate Memorial Day is April 26, and is actually a holiday in several states:

They put flags on CV graves. Clean and take care of CV's headstones in cemeteries, and in MS if a headstone has been broken, they notify the state for a replacement. Cleaning headstones is a lot of work, done with clorox and a rag.

There is a big DCV down in Okolona, MS where a major battle took place and lots of dead, they dress in period costumes, make wreaths for the graves, and make sure it is well taken care of.

Lots of the guys do re-enactments. Make period weapons etc...

The President etc.... all took part in getting Gen. Forrest's remains and his wife's after Memphis removed them, and reinterred them in the National Museum, all at a cost done with donations by members.

So yeah just the genealogy is a lot of good info, and each one of these clubs can be a hobby, as in attendance, no problem, but they also do lots of stuff related to the period, so it won't be lost.
