I am good for 10 or 40 meters Sunday. I looked st my old logs we had a talk time back in 2007. We didn’t do it many times but it was fun.

Gonna do my utmost to join the group. Unhappily I was just informed that our house/dog sitter was re scheduled to be here @ 1700 and I’m going to have to discuss several things concerning the house and the dog with her. NOT HAPPY about it but I will do my best to work around it. gonna be gone the next 2 weekends following this one to boot :(

I will do my best to listen to the group.

All I have is very old equipment, but it still works.

Icom first generation IC-706. Bought it in 1996 at the
Richmond FrostFest. Used it last week on 40 meters.

Transworld Electronics/Metron T500M, 500 watt
HF amp. Saw 510 watts last week.
It produces a nice signal, using a modified BB3
screwdriver antenna. I enlarged the caphat last year,
and the antenna is 18 foot long.

Here are a couple of pics, that I took yesterday.

CQDX

Please be safe everyone.

Regards to all.

the 706MKIIG was my first HF rig . . . one of Icom's very best . . . still have my original from 04 and bought a second one from a guy who needed some quick cash for $450. . . that one had been opened up so it will talk outside the band limits and operates on 11M. both of those are in mothballs and faraday protection.

haven't used either of my amps for a GOOD while now - they've been covered and on the bench. truth told I'm a bit afraid to tune up the 811H . . . nothing seems to stick on the hard drive like it used to and I've forgotten some of my technique. I have some old notes here:

HOW TO BE KIND TO YOUR 811 H
  • start tuning @ 10W
  • limit Grid current to 150mA
  • limit Plate current to 450mA
  • all power increase comes from Xmtr

HOW TO BE KIND TO YOUR AL 1500
  • start tuning @ 10W
  • limit Grid current to 100mA
  • limit Plate current to 900mA
  • all power increase comes from Xmtr
  • tune for max power out while keeping plate and grid current to minimum
IIRC the tube in that AL 1500 while not indestructible is pretty robust as well as forgiving

THOTS AND COMMENTS ARE APPRECIATED . . .
cuz ol hillbilles kin be fergitn' sum stuff frum time ta time

We need a code word to know who are timebomb memebers...... ;)

I suggest 'Time travelers'. Anything related to something that makes a lot of noise and causes a great deal of damage is going to attract a lot of unwanted attention.
as far as the quote boxes above - if I might respectfully suggest to the group . . .
assuming @#1 oldskool is our net control op - why not be on station a few minutes prior to the sked time and begin like this:

"this is KO4GGR looking for any TB stations . . . come now please"

clean
unobtrusive
no " hot button" or "catch words"

I respectfully request to bring some thots before the group. I and several others here are very greatly desiring to participate in this most EXCELLENT idea. I am NOT at all intending to overpower or influence the group in any way. having so stated:

the concept of a "TB net" has been bantered back and forth here for Y E A R S. I'd suggest the reason it never took off is simple. its NOT that there aren't a lot of HAMS out here in TB2K land - hamming and prepping go together like eggs and bacon. its that OPSEC beast. I'm not the only one who's been reluctant to be involved becasue of that.

the concern for OPSEC has been mentioned by several here other than myself. thus I'm assuming that there is a desire to remain at least SOMEWHAT GREY out here in radio land. to that end I'd further assume language including hot button words/phrases like TIME BOMB should be avoided.

its a reality that others will hear us - and at very least - copy the mail. they WILL want to join in the QSO becasue that's what rag chews and this delightful hobby are all about. not only should that be EXPECTED - it should be WELCOMED. the way to AVOID any potential issues is really pretty simple:

have answers for certain questions ready and available. some thoughts below and OTHERS SHOULD ADD TO THIS LIST:
  • what are TB stations? - "we're an loosely organized group of radio friends that meet from time to time and rag chew on an infrequent and informal basis. we pick and chose various freqs and random times to meet"
  • I'd THINK that avoiding statements suggesting/relating to the board itself would be wise.
others please comment - I'm NOT intending to unduly influence or control this topic in any way shape of fashion. I sincerely hope I've not offended anyone here.

I DO have one other request. as I stated up thread - I was just informed of a personal conflict here at 1700hrs this Sunday. is there a chance that we could begin at 1600hrs EST? that time would also likely favor 10M conditions and give members east of the Mississippi a better opportunity to reach others over on the left coast.

I will be looking forward to this net. I'll check here for time and freq. Station is ready to go!

Agree with most of Raggedyman's points. I appreciate Oldskool for taking point and being NC. That way I can jump on and people won't know if I am one of those TB2K people or an innocent radio passer-by. At least until I start talking about fuel storage!

My suggestion is 40 meters rather than ten. Ten will have too many coverage holes if you consider the entire US. 40 should get you the East coast at least. Ten may be skippy and not give anything in your neighborhood. A nationwide net can be very tricky frequency wise!
And then: agree on Frequency (or frequencies) and UTC times!
73, NC4(and the first two of the above three.)

excellent points on 10 - skippy and no locals. doubt I could work the Jeep and Nowski on 10 but 40 would likely get their ground wave pretty well. if there's a possibility of doing this on 40 remember Europe will be banging in there not long after 1700 hrs . . . what about an earlier start time? 1600 hrs EST?

1600 EDST...got it...remember, clocks move ahead one hour tonight ;)

Start at 7.210 - 7.220 depending on traffic, of course? Or does someone else have a favorite?

"You finally really did it. You maniacs!
It' a date !!!! Today (3/12/23) at 4:pm EDST (20:00 hrs UTC) we will try to get together and muddle through a 'makeshift' informal net amoung Ham operators that frequent TB2000. I will start at about 3:50 pm calling @ 7.210 on 40 meters . I will be calling for members of TB (short for talk about net, at least thats the story for anyone not in the know). I will start a thread in the comms section that we can monitor during the upcoming fiasco :eye: for frequency changes and things such as that! If someone can Modify the thread title and insert (UPDATE POST #64), it would be greatly appreciated!

I am getting good signal off the crank wind up shortwave, we are very overcast, low cloud ceiling on the bluffs here in Iowa. Reception is usually better after dark. Its even better if I step outside to listen this afternoon, very sharp. You made me dig the baofang and all the gear out of faraday protection, but this test was a great idea! Allamakee Co Sheriff is the local repeater

Winter time has returned. It was a really nice day yesterday,
and today, had to wear a jacket while in the truck,
looks like rain is coming. It had started to mist some,
when I came in.

At least saw 485 watts, from the 35 year old Metron,
and it was cold, when I checked it after my QSO
with net control.

Going to install Remote Rig. Can then come inside
the house, and operate the mobile.

The "Oldskool" net.

Quite a few stations checking in.

Take care everyone.

I can listen only no license but can confirm you on here. Am on the Lansing bluffs at Mt. Hosmer 1500 elevation tower

The utwente shortwave online over in the Netherlands waterfall is very muddy and bleed thru in Europe. you came thru only sporadic chatter. That was on laptop, the shortwave listener app for mobile phone was useless. So app test was a fail

We are quite rural, lots of forest so radio for firewatch is strong here.
