CORONA Covid now in the older folks in my family

On TB every waking moment
Brother and SIL came down with it just before Christmas. She is triple vax'd, felt lousy for three days and then got over it. Younger Brother, 87 yrs, not vaccinated, lean as a whip, works out every day, did not recover as easily. He lost his sense of taste and smell. He is food oriented so he quit eating "everything tastes like cardboard". Then he got a bad cough that kept him up at night.

Finally SIL dragged him to the ER. Hmmm! Double pneumonia! Doc says quite common at that stage. So he is hooked up to an IV, O2, steroids and god knows what else. He is in the regular hospital sleeping in a recliner. Last night he ate half a grilled chicken sandwich so there is progress.

I think if he had been overweight, he'd be dead.

Johns Hopkins ran off with my taste and never gave it back. Took some of the enjoyment out of life but I was never food oriented so it is not a disaster. In his case, it is.

Vitamin D levels, it attacks vitamin D, deficient people

Study finds over 80 percent of COVID-19 patients have vitamin D deficiency
Washington, DC October 27, 2020
Vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent in men
Over 80 percent of 200 COVID-19 patients in a hospital in Spain have vitamin D deficiency, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Vitamin D is a hormone the kidneys produce that controls blood calcium concentration and impacts the immune system. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a variety of health concerns, although research is still underway into why the hormone impacts other systems of the body. Many studies point to the beneficial effect of vitamin D on the immune system, especially regarding protection against infections.

“One approach is to identify and treat vitamin D deficiency, especially in high-risk individuals such as the elderly, patients with comorbidities, and nursing home residents, who are the main target population for the COVID-19,” said study co-author José L. Hernández, Ph.D., of the University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain. “Vitamin D treatment should be recommended in COVID-19 patients with low levels of vitamin D circulating in the blood since this approach might have beneficial effects in both the musculoskeletal and the immune system.”

The researchers found 80 percent of 216 COVID-19 patients at the Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla had vitamin D deficiency, and men had lower vitamin D levels than women. COVID-19 patients with lower vitamin D levels also had raised serum levels of inflammatory markers such as ferritin and D-dimer.

I just ordered 160 more 12 mg IVM tablets (30 days to receive so ADC says), and am on a regimen of vitamins and supps that I could never imagine in years past. I must take 15 pills a day now. (And yes, D3 is one of them, and my order of Acetyl L-Carnitine HCl arrives tomorrow.)

Adding prayers for your brother Troke.

As a side note - your younger brother is 87? Way to go! Keep doing whatever it is you're doing. You probably could give lessons to the rest of us.

Well, damn, Doc told bro when he entered that he figured three days in the hospital. Today Doc told him that if he had not been in such good physical shape, he'd been a gonner. Bro now thinks the Doc figured dead in three days.
Anyway he is progressing but I doubt he will be out in three days..

I hope he does not get into Long Haul. He does not have the personality for that.

Dennis, Sorry I don’t recall but how and where are you able to “order” IVM tablets?

I am afraid my traveling days are about over. Five hours in an auto and I need a day to recover.

As for word from the Troke Covid front, Brother is down with viral pneumonia and is on max O2. I have had that pneumonia. It is tough to beat. But that was50 years ago and maybe they got better treatment now.

I ordered mine from ALL Day Chemist in India. 2 orders so far no problems. If you order get the hydroxycloriquine and antibiotics too. Could kick myself for not remembering HCQ.
Yes, I heard Dr. McCullough say that Hydroxy seems to be very good for Omicron.

I have labs done every few months. My Vit D level stays in the low 30’s, even with supplements. Guess I need to take more.
Vit K2 and magnesium are important to take with D any that combination may improve your levels. Getting lots of Sun will almost definitely improve the levels and, if you’re overweight, losing a few pounds will also improve levels. That’s my understanding anyway.

I would think that since Covid makes one hypercoagulable, or prone to clots, that Vit K would be contraindicated.
