Chris Licht Out at CNN Amid Trump Town Hall Fallout, Ratings Plunge and Staff Uproar

Chris Licht has exited CNN as CEO amid heightened criticism, according to a Warner Bros. Discovery announcement.

Licht’s tenure, which began when he assumed the position of CEO and Chairman of CNN Worldwide in April 2022, was shrouded in criticism from former and current CNN staffers alike, including former CNN CEO Jeff Zucker, whom Licht succeeded. The decision is effective immediately, according to a Wednesday morning release from Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav.

“I have great respect for Chris, personally and professionally,” Zaslav wrote. “The job of leading CNN was never going to be easy, especially at a time of huge disruption and transformation, and he has poured his heart and soul into it. While we know we have work to do as we look to identify a new leader, we have absolute confidence in the team we have in place and will continue to fight for CNN and its world class journalism.”

Warner Bros. Discovery chief announced Licht’s departure in a staffwide editorial conference call Wednesday morning, saying: “I met with Chris and he will be leaving CNN. We’re in the process of conducting a wide search, internally and externally, for a new leader.” Puck was first to report the departure.

Zaslav said in the interim, the CNN leadership team will consist of Amy Entelis, Virginia Mosely, and Eric Sherling. David Leavy, brought on very recently as COO in a sign that Licht was in trouble, will continue running business operations.

The news comes days after The Atlantic published a devastating 16,000-word profile of the CNN boss, which alleged that Licht told former President Donald Trump to “have fun” during his May town hall on the network. The event was highly critiqued as providing a sounding board for Trump to continue spreading misinformation about the 2020 election and further defame author E. Jean Carroll.

Although the network initially claimed “GOP-leaning independents” would make up the audience for the Kaitlan Collins-moderated live event, the profile noted that Licht knew that the crowd would skew more towards MAGA enthusiasts.

Following the profile’s circulation, Licht apologized to staffers for distracting from the network’s work on an editorial meeting, saying “CNN is not about me. I should not be in the news unless it’s taking arrows for you.”

Despite his efforts to make it up to staffers — including relocating his office to a newsroom floor — CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy said in his daily Reliable Sources newsletter that “Licht has lost the room,” adding that his comments on the staff meeting “did little to move the needle.”

First beginning the position amid the ongoing merger of Warner Bros. Discovery in spring 2022, Licht immediately made his mark on the network known by enforcing policies to tone down any displays of partisanship by on-air talent.

By mid-September, media reporter and “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter was shown the door and his show canceled, reporter John Harwood exited after calling Trump a “dishonest demagogue” in his final on-air appearance and Don Lemon was shifted from his primetime gig to host newly rebooted “CNN This Morning.”

After lining up Lemon, Kaitlan Collins and Poppy Harlow to host the new morning show, which launched Nov. 2022 — which was likely part of Licht’s goal to “reimagine mornings” — the program quickly fizzled ratings-wise before Lemon’s abrupt ouster and Collin’s shift to a new primetime program will leave “CNN This Morning” in need of another rethink.

When it was first announced that President Trump was doing the town hall at CNN, I thought why walk into a den of vipers? But the president handled it very well and honestly looked like he WAS having fun! As far as that Carroll chick, how can you spread misinformation on a lie?

The program was already fizzling before any of the changes.

And there is the real reason for Mr. Licht's departure. CNN, nor their audience, wants to tone down the partisanship. They love their one-sided view of things and are terrified that someone might come in and present the other side. I honestly wonder how many CNN-ites watched the townhall and, if nothing else, stopped to rethink their beliefs. Beyond that, all that was accomplished was to show that President Trump is still vigorous and unafraid, as opposed to the stumbling, basement dwelling, hair sniffing pResident Pudding Cup.

High-profile CNN anchors Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, and Erin Burnett voiced their concerns about CNN boss Chris Licht: Wall Street Journal

  • Major CNN talent voiced concerns about CEO Chris Licht, The Wall Street Journal reports.
  • Citing those close to the matter, WSJ said several hosts spoke to incoming COO David Leavy.
  • The report follows a disastrous profile of Licht in The Atlantic by Tim Alberta.

As if things weren't rocky enough for CNN Worldwide CEO Chris Licht, a new report from The Wall Street Journal revealed top on-air talent voiced concerns about the CEO to incoming COO David Leavy.

The Journal, citing anonymous sources close to the matter, reported that Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, and Erin Burnett have all criticized Licht. The report follows a disastrous profile in The Atlantic, a widely-panned town hall with former President Donald Trump, and an ongoing ratings slump.

CNN announced that Leavy would be joining CNN 24 hours before Tim Alberta's Atlantic piece dropped, and though the new COO does not start until June 20, the Journal reports he's already been talking with producers and hosts.

The Journal reported that Licht is seen as more aloof and walled off from the newsroom, which contrasts with the style of his predecessor Jeff Zucker, who was often in the scrum.

Licht joined the network a little over a year ago and has been trying to boost ratings, shake up programming, and bring independent and Republican viewers back to the network.

The changes have not been without their road bumps. The network faced personnel issues with a new morning show helmed by Poppy Harlow, Kaitlan Collins, and Don Lemon. CNN and Lemon parted ways in April. His split with the network followed remarks that former South Carolina governor and GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley "isn't in her prime."

And its highly-publicized CNN Town Hall with Trump — while boosting ratings to 3.3 million on the night itself — led to both internal and external criticism of the network.

Representatives for Cooper, Tapper, and CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The executive producer of "OutFront with Erin Burnett" did not immediately respond to comment.

As Insider's Global Editor in Chief Nich Carlson reported over the weekend, the media elite were shocked by Alberta's profile and Licht's behavior. Now, it appears that the call is also coming from inside the house.

Don’t let the Piss Ants get you down…
I scan these pieces about CNN and just came to the realization that I don’t have any idea of who these people are…. I’d heard of Don Lemon but cannot say I’ve actually heard or watched him… ever.

Big departure from the days of the First Gulf War.

It's a no-win from a business perspective. They're prisoner to their gaggle of ultra woke anti-Trump viewers. They've destroyed all semblance they ever had to a reputable news organization, so they're dead to the rest of the potential viewers out there.

I guess the best they can hope for is Trump gets in there again so they have 4 more years of "the walls are closing in". God forbid they'd have to actually be journalists.
