China is upgrading three airbases located opposite Taiwan, boosting its airpower capability in an already tense region that is flush with air combat capabilities. Construction of the new infrastructure began in early 2020 and continued uninterrupted through the pandemic, underlining its priority.
The work at the Chinese air force's bases at Longtian, Huian, and Zhangzhou, all of which lie between 100 and 200 miles from Taiwan, give it an enhanced forward presence near the Taiwan Strait. This, when coupled with the flurry of flights through Taiwan’s ADIZ, all appear to be in line with Beijing’s evolving aggressive posture towards the island nation.

One development that could sustain better operations and replenishment while catering to a variety of missions is the likely construction of munition bunkers at Longtian Airbase. Minor expansions can also be observed at both ends of the runway, along with the development of new aprons with visible markings.
Four hardened aircraft structures are seen taking shape at one end of this airbase, becoming the only protective aviation infrastructure on site. Protective shelters for aircraft have multiple benefits beyond the obvious defense attributes. With advances in satellite imagery, these shelters would also help keep aircraft inventory and their general readiness away from prying eyes. In addition, the construction of administrative buildings and possible barracks points to a rise in personnel.

At nearby Huian Airbase, similar patterns can be seen, with the construction of three storage bunkers, likely for munitions, minor runway extensions, and expansions of aprons underway.
The upgraded aprons at both bases could suggest a future increase in aircraft deployments. At the very least, they would be able to support air combat capabilities surging into the area. Interestingly, the site is also receiving four hardened aircraft shelters, which will be in addition to the existing 24 sunshade-type shelters already functional at the base. The investment in developing these bomb-proof shelters could also be based on a threat assessment of a Taiwanese counterattack. They could be especially useful for supporting alert operations, as well.

Not far away, at Zhangzhou airbase, there is observable construction of a new surface-to-air missile defense site, the third one for the same location. These dedicated surface-to-air missile defense sites at the three airbases have also been actively rotating equipment and training.

These developments are in addition to other air combat-related construction projects along the Strait, in particular, the construction of a massive heliport that would be critical for all types of operations—from anti-submarine warfare to airborne assaults—during a major conflict with Taiwan.
When analyzed, China's rapid upgrades suggest steps are being taken toward improving survivability and concealment of assets and operations, as well as expanding the capacity for surge operations.

There have been no visible changes in the deployment of aircraft to these bases as of now, but, strategically, these improved facilities will allow for more operations aimed at intimidating Taipei or could be used in support of actual amphibious and airborne assault operations.

All these Chinese combat preps by Xi the merciless are chaff. The REAL reason Xi the merciless is signalimg he WILL soon invade Tawain is how he is preparing his PEOPLE for war.

The way he has done that is he just spent $200 million dollars on a movie that rewrites Korea's Battle of Chosin Reservoir as a CHINESE MILITARY VICTORY. And THAT means war is REAL.

China releases record $200M anti-US propaganda war movie

A new record-setting $200 million Chinese war movie commissioned by the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) depicts the Korean War Battle of Chosin Reservoir as a key victory for the Chinese forces that fought against the U.S. and United Nations, despite suffering major losses.

The nearly three-hour-long movie, “The Battle at Lake Changjin” — the Chinese name for the Battle of Chosin Reservoir — released September 30 tells the story of the battle from the Chinese perspective. While the U.S. views the battle as a successful fight to break through an encirclement by a larger Chinese force that suffered heavier casualties, CNN reported China sees the battle as its most critical victory during the war and refers to it as the “War to Resist American Aggression and Aid Korea.”

CNN also reported the new movie is the “most expensive film” made in China to date, with a budget of 1.3 billion yuan (about $200 million).

China’s Tencent News reported the film was planned, created and filmed under the direct guidance of the Chinese government’s Central Propaganda Department and the National Film Administration and had the support of the Propaganda Bureau of Political Work Department of China’s Central Military Commission, the Propaganda Department of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, and the Propaganda Departments of the Liaoning and Hebei Provincial Party Committees.

The Daily Mail reported the film’s release was also deliberately timed to come out in the same year as the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ruling CCP. The New York Times reported the film was also released ahead of China’s annual October holiday, known as Golden Week. Golden Week celebrates the founding of the modern Chinese government, the People’s Republic of China, under its ruling CCP.
According to Variety, the Chinese war movie has already earned about $633 million since its release and is the fourth highest-grossing film of 2021.
The Daily Mail reported the Chinese war movie’s box office success may be due, in part, the Chinese government organizing cinema trips for its extensive workforce.

The Associated Press reported the Chinese government has also emphasized less travel and more moviegoing during this year’s seven-day Golden Week national holiday. The Chinese government already has tight control over what foreign films can be shown in China and enforces an unofficial ban on foreign productions during Golden Week.

The timing of “The Battle at Like Changjin” also comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and China in recent years. China has depicted its military forces defeating U.S. forces in past military films, such as “Wolf Warrior,” which tells the fictional story of a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) special operations soldier who battles with an ex-U.S. Navy SEAL turned mercenary. Wolf Warrior 2, China’s highest-grossing film, also depicts a battle between the PLA special operations Wolf Warrior unit and an American mercenary force.

I wonder what toys the Taiwanese have tucked away "just in case"?

They are pretty technologicaly savvy, and have had decades to develop an in depth defense.

I have long suspected that Taiwan and Japan have nuclear weapons. Both are sophisticated nuclear power and manufacturing states and there are no great secrets to manufacturing nuclear weapons.

The greatest nuclear weapons secrets in a couple of generations have been with respect to miniaturization and not weapons production, per se. During the Cold War both the Soviets and the US produced some really big bombs, in the 20 megaton range. This compares to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs of roughly 15 and 22 kilotons respectively.

Eventually, both the Soviets and the US realized that 20 megaton weapons were insanely over-powered and served no realistic military function. Now, most of their strategic arsenal weapons are 250 kilotons or less. It really doesn't matter that much because any city hit by WWII type weapons of "only" 15 or 20 kilotons would be essentially destroyed in any case. Some strategic studies suggest that it's actually better to strike population centers with smaller weapons due to the increased chaos they would cause.

I don't imagine that Taiwan and Japan are leaving themselves wide open to a Chinese attack without some method of defense and retaliation.

Yeah, them, South Korea and Israel. I think a lot of that has to do with their "relationship" with the US and the public "how" of them either stopping what programs they had as well as the run up to it and after if acknowledgedat all.

The list of nascent nuclear powers is actually pretty long and includes South Africa, the big three in South America and most of the European countries. All that's missing is political will and a budget line item, the NPT not withstanding.....

Climate czar accused of downplaying Uyghur genocide during climate negotiations with China

Climate czar John Kerry and his wife have at least a $1 million stake in a Chinese investment group that is a major funder of China's artificial intelligence sector—including a tech company blacklisted by the United States for human rights abuses against the Uyghurs, according to financial records reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.

Kerry holds "over $1,000,000" in investments in Hillhouse China Value Fund L.P., according to a financial disclosure report he filed at the beginning of the year. Hillhouse is a top shareholder in YITU Technology, which is involved in China's high-tech surveillance operation against the Uyghur people and helped develop a facial surveillance software for the Chinese government that sorts individuals by race and ethnicity, according to the New York Times.

In 2019, the U.S. Department of Commerce added YITU to its trade restriction blacklist for being "implicated in human rights violations and abuses in the implementation of China's campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology surveillance against Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups."

As special presidential envoy for climate, Kerry has been heavily focused on diplomatic discussions with China, which is the top global greenhouse gas producer. Kerry has downplayed China's persecution of the Uyghur people while attempting to negotiate climate change agreements with the Chinese government. "Life is always full of tough choices," said Kerry last month, when asked if it was necessary to trade human rights for climate concessions. Republican lawmakers expressed concern last month that Kerry was quietly lobbying against a Senate-approved bill that would ban Chinese imports linked to Uyghur slave labor after the legislation stalled in the House.

Anders Corr, an intelligence analyst and the publisher of the Journal of Political Risk, called Kerry's investment an "astonishing and disappointing revelation."

"Kerry leads on the China issue, not just climate talks, and he and his family should be forbidden from investing in a manner that creates even the appearance of a conflict of interest," said Corr.

Corr said China views the artificial intelligence industry as "one of a very few most important strategic sectors for its economic and military development," and the expansion of this sector will "enable the achievement of its goal to become globally hegemonic."

"No American should invest in China's AI capabilities, which only empower the country in its economic growth, and ultimately the military strength with which it will challenge the benign leadership of the United States," Corr said.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Kerry's Hillhouse stake is through a trust in which his wife is the beneficiary. While Kerry's wife is a beneficiary of the trust, he stated in the disclosure that they are not involved in managing the investments.

Hillhouse is one of the top shareholders in YITU Technology, according to a copy of an initial public offering prospectus YITU filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange's Science and Technology Innovation Board last November and obtained by the Free Beacon. The investment group led a $55 million capital injection into YITU in 2017, according to news reports from the time.

The Hillhouse China Value Fund is part of the Hillhouse Capital Group, an investment powerhouse run by Chinese businessman Zhang Lei.

Zhang sits on Shanghai's Artificial Intelligence Strategy Expert Advisory Board, a committee created by the Chinese government as part of its efforts to ramp up its artificial intelligence industry. As recently as 2019, he was listed as a member of the China-United States Exchange Foundation, an organization tied to the Chinese government's overseas influence operations. Zhang and Hillhouse group also bankrolled the Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence at the government-run Renmin University, according to the school's website.

The Chinese government has set a goal of becoming the global leader in artificial intelligence by 2030, prompting concern from U.S. national security experts who say it is using the technology for militarization and exerting totalitarian-like control over dissidents and domestic minority groups.

China's Grave Warning To Taiwan Has Our World Sitting Upon A Nuclear Powder Keg That Could Ignite At Any Moment With America Firmly Opposed By A Nuclear Triad
imageedit_1_5321400050.jpg

“As Somebody who is cognizant of the evidence at all classification levels, cognizant of what’s going on in our exercises…I believe the light is blinking red.” Lt. Gen. S. Clinton Hinote
“Now the international situation has changed dramatically…In order to protect the peaceful rise of our country, it is necessary to make limited adjustments to our nuclear policy.” Unofficial People’s Liberation Army Website

As the 59th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis approaches on October 16th, it may be useful to reflect and consider some strategic similarities, and dissimilarities, between the U.S.-USSR nuclear confrontation over Cuba in 1962, and the present China-U.S. confrontation over Taiwan, that many fear could escalate into a nuclear World War III.

Cuba and Taiwan: Superpower Confrontation
Ideologically, the takeover of Cuba by communist revolutionary Fidel Castro in 1959 was perceived in Washington to be a serious blow to the credibility of the U.S. and the Free World in their Cold War struggle against Soviet communism. Cuba, a free enterprise “wild west” for U.S. corporations, and in America’s own backyard, had thrown off “the shackles of capitalism” to go communist.

Today, Taiwan is literally and figuratively an island of political and economic freedom, a prosperous rebuke to communist totalitarianism, in China’s own backyard.

Far worse from Beijing’s perspective, the government of Taiwan is descended from anti-communists who lost the civil war to control mainland China in 1949. Taiwan’s government calls itself the “Republic of China” because they still consider themselves the legitimate rulers of the mainland, in exile.

The “People’s Republic of China,” as communist China calls itself, regards Taiwan’s “Republic of China” as illegitimate, an unconquered pocket of rebellion, in illegal occupation of communist China’s island territory of Taiwan.

Worst of all from Beijing’s perspective, Taiwan’s government poses an existential threat to communist China. Taiwan could foment revolution, or someday return from exile with the backing of the U.S. and allies to take over control of the mainland, or so a paranoid Beijing fears.

Consequently, China’s ideological and political interests in conquering Taiwan are far greater than U.S. interests were or are in ousting communism from Cuba.

Yet the U.S. did covertly invade Cuba, in the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs operation, run by the CIA using an army of Cuban exiles, unsupported by the U.S. military, so Washington could avoid looking like an “imperialist” power.

Communist China has no qualms about breaking international law or making overt military threats to conquer Taiwan. China has been constrained from doing so for decades only because of their insufficient military capabilities and fear of U.S. intervention.

Cuba and Taiwan: Nuclear Flashpoints
Geostrategically, Cuba and Taiwan are in analogous situations, island nations next door to military superpowers, indefensible without a superpower friend.

In 1962, Cuba’s superpower friend was the USSR. But even the USSR could not project enough naval strength across the Atlantic to defend Cuba from the United States.

So Moscow protected Cuba with extended nuclear deterrence, including by basing nuclear missiles in Cuba—which also greatly increased the USSR’s capability to launch a surprise nuclear attack against the U.S.

So began the Cuban missile crisis (16 October – 20 November 1962), resolved by the USSR’s humiliating withdrawal of nuclear missiles from Cuba—compelled by the U.S. having a 5-to-1 advantage in ICBMs and vast superiority in strategic nuclear bombers.

President Kennedy also secretly agreed to withdraw U.S. obsolete Jupiter missiles from Turkey. That the Soviets accepted international humiliation and kept this part of the deal secret testifies to the bargaining leverage afforded by superior U.S. nuclear firepower in 1962.

Consequences of U.S. Military and Nuclear Decline
Today, if China attempts to conquer Taiwan, it will be the U.S., like the USSR in 1962, that will be militarily disadvantaged.

The Pentagon’s own wargames show the U.S. losing to China in a conflict over Taiwan.

The Defense Department’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategy, Integration, and Requirements, Lt. General Sam Hinote, warned recently: “As Somebody who is cognizant of the evidence at all classification levels, cognizant of what’s going on in our exercises…I believe the light is blinking red…Why? Because it used to be that when we did future war games, we were having trouble when we set the war game 5, 10, 15 years out into the future…But what has changed since the last time we sat in this building two years ago, is that it’s not a future problem…It is a current problem…We are out of time.”

Like the U.S. in 1962, China may soon, if not already, dominate the nuclear balance.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China's state-run mouthpiece the Global Times on Thursday (Oct. 14) posted an editorial in which it warned that the dispatch of U.S. forces to defend Taiwan would deal a "death blow" to American soldiers.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby said the ongoing incursions by Chinese warplanes into Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) were "destabilizing" and heightened the chances of "miscalculation." He then highlighted that the U.S. commitment to Taiwan was "rock solid" and that it ensured the "maintenance of peace and stability across the strait."
In an editorial released on Thursday, China's state-operated tabloid wrote that the term "rock-solid," frequently used by the Biden administration, can "deceive and appease radical forces" in Taiwan, but will never deter China. It vowed that the communist country will continue to strengthen its military to gain "decisive and overwhelming leverage" to resolve the "Taiwan question."
It claimed that Taiwan cannot rely on Washington to "fight to the death" with China and is merely "playing geopolitical tricks." The author alleged that the U.S. is playing the "Taiwan card" to impede China's rise, but is not something the Western power is willing to lose lives over.
The article argued that the U.S. has "lost its strength to make 'rock solid' commitments to Taiwan." It argued that the Taiwan Strait is now within striking range of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), which China now believes is strong enough to blunt any "military interference" by the U.S.
The state-owned voice box then warned Washington that sending its naval and air forces to defend Taiwan would be a "death blow to U.S. soldiers." Threatening nuclear war, it said China now has second-strike capabilities with the DF-41 road-mobile and JL-3 submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles.
According to the author, when China decides to resolve the "Taiwan question" with force, Taiwan will be a repeat of the fall of Nanjing in 1949. It purported that when the battle for Taiwan plays out in the same way as the Chinese Civil War, abandonment of Taiwan will be Washington's "inevitable choice."
