Chicken Pox

My 2 year old grand daughter has them. She has a baby sister about 2 months old. I'm thinking she will get this. Has anyone ever known a baby to get chicken pox? I wonder what to expect with the poor child.

It's good to get it now

She'll never be at risk again.

Treat the sores with lots of calamine, maybe give her a bath with some baking soda in the water to help with the itching. It's a virus and just has to run its course.

Question
My son is 3 months old.

I am writing to you because he was exposed to his 7 year old cousin who has just been diagnosed with chicken pox.

What should I do???

Answer
Giving him an injection of gamma globulin, which is a blood product taken from an adult population most of which have had chicken pox in the past and therefore contains antibiodies, may prevent the disease but it will definitely make the disease less severe. If you had chicken pox in the past you will have passed on antibodies to him that will last about 6 months. If you have not had the disease I would call his pediatrician or family physician Monday and ask about the gamma globulin. I would avoid the emergency room because the time if not an emergency. If you have had chicken pox call your physician Monday and see if h/she agrees with me.

Three of my children had it at the ages of 4 yrs, 2 yrs and 6 mo. The 6 mo old was totally breastfed and the doctor didn't think she would get it or it would be a mild case. It was a bad case with pox in her mouth and vaginal area. She still has scars even though she never scratched.

Please don't assume that chicken pox is a benign disease for infants. My children were pretty sick for about a week.
