Fruit Cherry tree

We have a cherry tree that we planted in spring of 2018. I was expecting it to fruit this year.

In the spring, it developed buds and was just beginning to leaf out when it stopped. We had a freeze in that time period, but my other fruit trees are fine.

Since then, new little shoots have come up from the base of the trunk. But the whole upper portion looks dead/dormant.

Could this tree have gone dormant or did it die? Any thoughts?

Hmmm... if it's been more than a few weeks without any attempt to put new leaves out, it unfortunately sounds dead. The sprouts are likely coming from the dwarfing rootstock, not the cherry.

Did you get bitter temps in any winter since it was planted? Winter kill often takes a couple years to show up. We saw 25 below one year... the peach actually produced fruit the following summer (!!!), but never leafed out the next spring.

We have some 15 year old Stellas that have struggled in the Ozarks. I suspect you need to call George Washington to finish it off. I would give it to next spring if only the suckers spring up its gone. Had our first quart of produce this spring out of 5 trees. They were wormy so I'll spray next year. This was the first major fruiting.

Their bark and wood seems to be so fragile. Seems like most of them have some section of the trunk that had dead wood with new flesh growing around it. I wanted cherries because after a hard winter they provide the first fruit and vitamin C. maybe in another 10 years I can make a Pie.

This tree is a Stella. When I ordered, it said it was good for my zone. Hmm, should we let the root stock continue to grow?
