Catalytic converter price?

Does anyone have a ball park figure on what it costs, including labor on a catalytic converter on a '99 Dodge Ram 150 club cab pickup?
It is at the dealership right now for a tune up, oil change, tranny fluids and stuff to the tune of $300. However, they think it will need a new catalytic converter. Running real rough, sounds like a tank, stinks like someone f@rted and knocking in the rear end.
Could be something else, though.

At least they gave us a nice new Dodge Ram for a free loaner!

Thanks for any info you can give me.

I checked the autozone site, but they say "not yet available". did a search and did find some, but only up to '98 and it was $275!
I don't want to think about what the dealer will charge. If it's possible, you might call for estimates at other shops before you let them do it.

Deisel Trooper - thanks for your reply! We got very lucky. My DH forgot that he purchased the 7 year warrenty. It was the catalytic converter and it didn't cost us a dime. They even gave us a big Dodge PU for a free loaner. Am I repeating myself? Sure beats the Neon that we got one other time

They also had the complete tuneup including all filters, brake check and all fluids all done in one afternoon. (THAT was $297.11!) without an appointment. The DH didn't have time to go get the truck yesterday because they close at 6:00 and dealerships are not open on Sundays in MN, so we still have the loaner until tomorrow.

I know the DH wants to keep the loaner instead - pretty good marketing technique by the dealership, but it won't work.

Sorry to prattle on so much, but I am so relieved. That truck is our only transportation and the busses are on strike in our city so gettting to work would be problematic at best.

Thanks again!

DT and all - I was wrong. My DH just said that he only had the 5 year warranty that ends the end of this month! I have been bugging him for 6 months to take the truck in to get checked out. I finally wrote him check and begged him to take it in yesterday just to "satisfy my paranoia". Good thing. I have never had a license or driven, but there is nothing wrong with my ears or nose or my feet when I hear unusual vibrations under my feet on the passenger side or the knocking in the rear end when he takes off after dropping me at work. Also, it would make lots of unhealthy noises leaving a stop or going up a hill with not much power evident. He said he didn't notice anything unusual except that he liked the "rumble" that wasn't there before

He was very sweet when he got home and thanked me for asking him to take it in. He doesn't bug me when I buy preps either - even helps out sometimes. He is a sweety

There I go again! In the future, I will come to this forum to voice my concerns too.
