I have 4 ft by 8 ft raised beds, 2 are going to be filled with onions. when I filled these beds, I used strait compost. well its filled with frass and weed seeds, even after 7 years, Ive sprayed with round up befofe. but after a few weeks the weeds start .

can I use preen in the onion beds?

ABSOLUTELY you can use PREEN . . . these are bulbs (aka 'BUBBS' in local parlance). PREEN works by the gluten binding with the "seed" and preventing it from germinating.

PREEN is gud stuff . . . your 'BUBBS' will be quite safe Shooter

I wish preen worked for me. I have absolutely no luck with it. Shooter have you had luck with it? Seems I have demonic weeds in my beds.

interesting . . . never had a problem with it. used it between rows . . . it reduced the tiller work load considerably. didn't plant what I'd typically done last year becasue of my spinal surgery last spring but it sure seemed to keep the weeds down between rows - and it would do so for WEEKS on end. after I'd till and rake I'd sprinkle it liberally and forget about it for up to 6-8 WEEKS . . .

maybee alla' y'all dun 'fended da weed gawds 'n now you'ns and you'rn beein whooped? :shr:

how about around tomatoes? gren peppers? and cucumbers?

the ONLY time you can't use PREEN is if you've direct sowed seed and are waiting for it to germinate. after you have two pairs of leaves - 4 leaves total you're good.

if you've planted a lettuce bed you don't want PREEN around it until you've got about 3" of growth up and all your seed has germinated.

if you've put tomatoes, peppers, ANYTHING you've bought as "sets" or started yourself - and its big enough to put in the ground - you can use PREEN right up against it without worry. PREEN is essentially "ground corn". the gluten from which mixes with water and bindds to the seed and prevents seed from germinating. if you plant (sow) seed and PREEN that area BEFORE your seed has germinated you're screwed if the PREEN is close enough to the seed that any rain would wash the gluten over your seed bed. lets say you sowed a row of beets and a row of carrots . . . they sprout and you have about 3" of growth. clean up your weeds spread your PREEN as close as you want now becasue your plants are up and the PREEN can now do its job with any weed seeds that have blown in or are on the ground you've just hoed or tilled - whatever you did to get rid of the weeds. rake it and spread your PREEN - gud ta go!

you only need to worry about PREEN with SEED. once you have 2 pair of leaves you're gud
hope that helps
