UK Man Dies From Suspected Ebola In Macedonia

One Briton dies and another is showing symptoms of the deadly disease in the Macedonian capital Skopje, say reports.
The Foreign Office is investigating reports that a British man has died from ebola in Macedonia.

A second Briton has shown symptoms of the deadly virus, a senior Macedonian government official told Reuters.

The Macedonian foreign ministry confirmed to Sky News that a UK national has died in hospital in the capital*Skopje, and tests are being carried out to see if he had ebola.
The hotel in Skopje where he had been staying has been sealed off.

Staff and another Briton remain inside, a spokesman for the Macedonian health ministry said.
If confirmed it would be the first death of a UK national from ebola,*which has so far killed more than 3,800 people in West Africa.

British nurse Will Pooley was cured of the virus last month after working as a volunteer nurse in Sierra Leone.

The news came as ministers said passengers arriving at Heathrow and Gatwick airports and Eurostar train terminals are to be screened for signs of the disease.
The Government, which previously said checks would be impractical and ineffective,*announced "enhanced screening" for travellers*arriving from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

The tests will involve assessing their recent travel history, who they have been in contact with, and a possible medical assessment.

The US has also unveiled extra airport screening after the death of the*first patient diagnosed with the deadly virus in America.

This one is the first report that I would actually say terrorism was a possibility. I wonder where their final destination was supposed to be?

Coincidently London police have just arrested five people with links to IS suspected of being about to launch attacks in the UK, the ringleader had just returned from Syria

Yeah, not good,

Another point is they've only left the UK a couple of days ago and one is already dead, neither have travelled to an Ebola infected country,
So who / where did they catch it from

true...I have to wonder if the UK peeps are of the Muslim persuasion looking to spread a little terrorism?

A plane has landed in Birmingham, AL with a possible Ebola case... supposedly it came from Istanbul. Too close to Macedonia for the starting point (and now ME at the end point), too much of a coincidence to be comfortable.

Lord, please let it all be scaredy cat hype on the part of the authorities and let me be imagining the connect the dot game.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham firefighters in hazardous material protective gear have set up a command post after a passenger on-board a flight that arrived at the Shuttlesworth-International Airport showed "signs of symptoms of Ebola."

Assistant Chief Tim Love said they have no indication the passenger has the disease but after a man died of the disease after flying into Dallas, the fire department wants to take no chances.

"We want to get ahead of this after what happened in Texas so we can do everything we can to protect people," Love said.

All passengers and crew have been told to remain on the plane.

It was not clear where the flight originated from, but on public safety radio it was said to be from Istanbul.

Jefferson County public health officer Dr. Mark Wilson said it is way too early to call this a suspected Ebola patient.

"We don't have enough information yet," Wilson said. "Somebody threw up on a plane. Lots of people throw up on planes."

He said health officials were seeking information such as country of origin.

"We need to be careful and methodical," he said. "We don't want people panicking."

Toni Herrera-Bast, spokeswoman for the airport, said she was aware of a medical emergency aboard a flight but said she had no additional information and referred questions to police and firefighters.

UAB spokesman Bob Shepard said the emergency department there has not been contacted.

Reporters Carol Robinson and Mike Oliver contributed to this report.

This is still a question that I haven't been able to settle in my mind, concerning the man that died in Dallas.....God knows he had seen enough death and spread of ebola before he came here...he had to be very aware of the danger he posed to all those family members that were around him while he was infectious......and then to those people that his family came into contact with before they were finally spirited away to a "gated community", and not a word from them since, except for the tweet that was put out by the woman he had come here to marry, a tweet that sounded nothing like her previous interviews....it sounded like a pr statement...........the whole handling of that Dallas situation is still highly suspicious to me......maybe I've just been reading too much gloom and doom........but I strongly feel that something's not right about that whole deal.

I found out from the radio last night, that the man was "an international" from Turkey (or at least had started from Turkey, they didn't clarify).

He flew from Turkey, to Canada, then to Chicago and from there on to Birmingham.

I don't and didn't feel the Dallas guy was a case of terrorism, with the one caveat of if he is actually a muslim and not a Christian, then I would change my opinion. I do think he thought he would be cured like the others if he could get here for treatment.

Jihadis (hardcore anyway) would not seek treatment, they would just continue to travel and go to as many places as they could to try to infect as many as possible.

Oreally

Right from the start
i'm thinking that certain airplanes that duncan or other infected but asymptomatic people have flown on are transmitting this though fomites that have stayed viable on undisinfected surfaces. contact tracing would be impossible. infections would be completely random and relatively rare.

Alcohol, not Ebola, possible cause of Briton's death in Macedonia

By Kole Casule

SKOPJE (Reuters) - Doctors in Macedonia have "serious indications" that alcohol, not Ebola, may have killed a British man visiting the Balkan country, a senior health official said on Friday.

The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said doctors who initially treated the man suspected haemorrhagic fever, given his symptoms of fever, vomiting and internal bleeding.

The Ebola virus, which has killed nearly 4,000 people in West Africa since March, causes haemorrhagic fever.

"The minute they (doctors) suspected that, they alerted supervisors, who isolated the body," preventing doctors from carrying out an autopsy, the source said.

Now, he said: "We have serious indications from several places that he consumed large amounts of alcohol, so the theory that this might be the cause of death is very much in play."

The Skopje hotel where the Briton was staying remained in lockdown on Friday, guarded by police who have let none of the 25 people inside leave since Thursday. Ten more people are in isolation in hospital, including the ambulance crew.

Another Briton travelling with the man was quoted by a Macedonian news portal, Telegraf.mk, as denying he had been drinking heavily. "He drank, but no more than anyone else," he said.

If alcohol poisoning is confirmed as the cause of death, the episode would underscore the degree of panic and difficulty hospitals and governments face in responding to the threat of the disease spreading in Europe, with a nurse in Spain the first to have contracted Ebola outside of Africa.

Health officials in Macedonia say they were following guidelines issued by the World Health Organization, particularly after initial information that the man had recently travelled to Nigeria. Authorities said on Friday he had in fact last been in Africa six years ago.

"For three days he was closed in his hotel room, didn't go out and didn't eat. The maid was helping him dress," said Dr. Jovanka Kostovska of the Health Ministry's commission for infectious diseases.

Kostovska said on Friday initial tests suggested only a "small probability" the man died of Ebola, but that blood and tissue samples had been sent to Frankfurt for tests. The results are expected on Saturday.

Oh dear. It sounds as though medical personnel in Macedonia might not know the difference between alcohol poisoning and Ebola.

'Unlikely' Briton died from Ebola in Macedonia

It is highly unlikely that a British man who died in Macedonia had Ebola, however 35 people thought to have been in contact with him are under quarantine, officials said Friday.

"Considering the epidemiological exams conducted yesterday (Thursday), the health authorities are getting closer to the view that there is no major probability of this being a case of Ebola," health ministry spokeswoman Jovanka Kostovska told reporters.

However preventive measures recommended by the World Health Organization were being taken until a German lab had completed its analysis of samples from the Briton, she said.

The British man died in the Macedonian capital Skopje on Thursday after displaying Ebola-like symptoms, which include fever and vomiting.

To help establish the cause of death, health authorities sent samples to a laboratory in Hamburg. The results will not be known before late Saturday.

Meanwhile, Macedonian authorities put 25 people from the hotel the man had been staying in quarantine, including a fellow Briton, along with another 10 in the hospital he was admitted to.

According to Kostovska, "they are all in good condition and with constant medical care.... but none of them shows any symptoms."

Macedonian officials did not name the victim, saying only that he was born in 1956.

The man arrived in Macedonia from London on October 2 and was not thought to have travelled to any of the west African countries affected by the Ebola virus, his friends were reported to have said.

The current Ebola outbreak, the worst on record, has claimed nearly 3,900 lives since the start of the year, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

A nurse in Spain this week became the first person to contract the killer virus outside Africa, after caring for two repatriated Ebola patients who ended up dying at a Madrid hospital.

Mr Jeffrey, 58, was the former head of the Union of Foreign Investors in Macedonia.

The country's health officials said that Mr Jeffrey had travelled to Macedonia from London with a colleague on October 2.

He was staying in the Super Osmica (Super 8) hotel in the country's capital, Skopje, when he became ill with a severe stomach ache and raised temperature.

He remained in his his hotel room for three days before an ambulance was called yesterday afternoon.

He was taken to hospital but died 90 minutes later.

Four staff members and 20 guests, as well as anyone who came into contact with Mr Jeffrey, have been quarantined.
He told me yesterday his hands were shaking

Michael English
Michael English, a fellow Briton who was with Mr Jeffrey at the hotel and is now in quarantine, said: "He felt bad for two days. I was telling him to visit a doctor but he called ER only yesterday. He told me yesterday his hands were shaking.

"He has got a wife and three kids in Cambridge."

Although Mr English believed that Mr Jeffrey had last been in Africa six years ago, the Macedonian health ministry apparently suspects that he visited Nigeria more recently, although no reason was given for this.

Mr Jeffrey reportedly suffered an unexplained haemorrhage in the form of internal bleeding – although this could have been caused by several things.

Tests are currently being carried out to determine the cause of death and the results are expected tomorrow.

In the wake of Mr Jeffrey's death, the UK has ordered that air and rail passengers should be screened at borders.

Screening is likely to be introduced within days for passengers arriving at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick Airports and Eurostar train terminal.

Travellers whose journeys began in the worst-hit West African countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea will be asked for details of their movements and whether they have been in contact with anyone with the deadly virus, which has claimed almost 3,900 lives.

There has been some confusion over the Government's stance on screening.

The Department of Health changed its plans after initially saying that it had no plans to screen.

However Chancellor George Osborne said that the Government was simply reacting to the latest advice from its Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, who yesterday said it was right to consider further measures.

He told Sky News: "We are changing the very best medical advice in a fast-changing situation... You would expect us to follow the best medical advice to protect the British people."

The news comes as a Spanish nurse, Teresa Romero, remains in quarantine after becoming the first person to become infected with the virus outside Africa.

She contracted the disease while treating an infected priest, who later died.

Yesterday it emerged that her condition had worsened and her brother said that she needed help to breathe.

A total of six people are in quarantine in Carlos III Hospital in Madrd.

Meanwhile the first US Ebola victim, Thomas Eric Duncan, died on Wednesday in a Dallas hospital.

Medics are currently monitoring around 50 people who came into contact with him.

I think this post and the 2 above it should be moved to THEIR OWN THREAD.

Until it becomes too many to do practically, there should be a SEPARATE thread for EACH suspected Ebola location.

(pretty soon we're going to have to wall off a separate "Ebola" SIG just to keep up with it all....)

I was playing connect the dots because of the closeness/similarities of the news and answering a question asked.

Connect the dots on wild assumptions, I seldom do, but many here on tb2k do/have...including you.

At this point a dedicated Ebola forum might be a good idea. Unless of course it all suddenly goes Poof and stays Poof. Not likely given unrestricted travel.
