Brake Lights Won't Turn Off

I have a 91 Honda Civic. Today after returning from the store I noticed the brake lights stayed on. Engine is off and key is removed from ignition but brake lights stay on. I disconnected the battery so it won't drain. Any ideas?

Check on the arm of the brake pedal...typically, there is a small plastic plug that presses the brake switch. After several years they tend to fall apart, leaving a hole...just put a bolt and nut in there (you'll probably have to hold the brake pedal down to insert it) and it will last the life of the car. If you look closely, you might see small broken pieces of plastic on the floorboard, this would confirm the issue.

Could be the switch, but not as likely...

Thanx. Appreciate the info. Will check first thing in the morning.

Could ALSO be an indication that the brake pedal has sunk from its normal position, possibly caused by a defective hydraulic system -- defective or leaking master cylinder, leaking hydraulic lines, caliper or brake cylinder.

Check your brake fluid level -- is it full? Have you noticed a slow sinking sensation when holding the brake pedal down?
