I'm so p'd I don't even know which heading to use. Maybe Deep state, or this one.

Just like yesterday evening i had dinner, took a little walk, then turned on the tv to watch another episode of Star Trek next gen as I drift off to sleep. This is normal for me during a busy week. I've done this several hundred.. times because it works and helps me get to sleep and renew for the next day.

When I go to the channel that get's me to Paramount+ it asks me"Who's watching? I answer the same way every time: Me. It lists other choices like Children. Of course there are none here and it's STNG so it's rated pg at worst so who cares.

So tonight I do the same thing as always but I get a prompt that says to enter my full name and image. Huh? That's facial recognition! Just to turn on a Samsung(smart)tv I have to get biometrically tracked? This isn't right.

If it happens again tomorrow night I'll cancel my subscription and go back to reading. There are plenty of places where I can get news, watch tv, etc without being tracked. Xfinity made a serious mistake.

Netflix learned to stop doing that. That said, because we have several under our roof watching Netflix (or did) we have our own buttons with our initials to push because frankly I get tired of wading through other family's members choices. I like history and other kinds of documentaries. I rarely watch anime/cartoon/super hero movies, don't like some of the stuff hubby watches, our older son is all health and political stuff, and my daughter is all things sports which is a recipe for something going through the tv screen for me. It is the same way with our prime membership. But big time NOPE on a picture. Nope, nope, nope. And our names we use are made up. They can deal with it or go without our money. It is fast heading that way anyway as I have found channels on youtub I prefer.

Oh but it's coming to a computer device for you.

The incremental cost of the program to arrange this small. And the hardware tid-bits to do it are already on your device.

Owner covers my lap-top camera with a piece of black electricians tape. He edits that much should the machine be "hacked" by someone.

But new computers may "lock up" if you attempt to do this - or certain features (Apps) may not work if the camera is covered. Or if you turn off the volume. Or attempt to turn down the screen contrast to black.

The "hacking" will be likely "state sponsored" and out of your control. For your own good, of course.

When you buy a machine, you're buying "capability" to traverse that Internet Media. That is you USED to buy capability. Coming soon to a computer device near you - surveillance out of your control.

George Orwell's "1984."

The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment.

Hmmm….

DH refuses to use the WiFi on our smart tv which aggravates the spit outta me (there’s SO many channels we could be getting!) but he said, “because it might screw up the tv, PLUS….it’s probably another way for them to listen in and see us! I’m not giving them any more ways to do THAT because cell phones are bad enough!”

All we have is “antenna tv” with the basic cable to operate the computer.

Guess he might be correct. :(

Owner says he has a "dumb" TV of considerable size. It's now about 10 years old.

On occasion he'll watch TV. It's not often. But recently the Netflix channel he was watching "Suits" on decided to "rein in" the accessory users (of which he and his wife are) and for him Netflix is no more.

And given Netflix politics - he won't pay for his own account.

He says he's searched around looking for "Suits" elsewhere. It's there but ALWAYS behind a paywall. Like Peacock, or even Amazon Prime.

But - anything you want is out there in "internet land" - somewhere.

And this is a reason to be able to watch your TV using a computer as a source - even a WiFi connected computer.

And if you "feed" your dumb TV using an HDMI cable, it is unlikely you are being "watched" in return? Black electricians tape comes to mind.

And - come to think of it - what separates a "smart TV" from a "dumb TV" other than the HDMI connection?

I came to this googling "watch Suits streaming online."

Owner will be glad to see this when he looks later to see "what the horse has been up to."

I remember about 15 years ago I had a client whose hubby worked for a local IT outfit. She told me back then that our computers were spying on us. I told my hubby about it and we just laughed and laughed. Guess who isn't laughing anymore? :(

We have a Samsung wide screen and have never been asked for name and pic on any of the 12 streaming services.

If this happens that streaming service will be axed.

Texican....
Maybe they are getting the information without asking?
No way to say for sure yes or no if you have a smart TV

No smart TV here. It was far cheaper than than the smart ones and I don't have to feed it any personal information.
Matter of fact, I got rid of sat TV when I compared the cost of purchasing DVD's to sat cost and watching movies on DVD's won out.
