Joe Biden Rules Out Second Term if ‘Energy and Mental Acuity’ Decline

Appearing Thursday evening at a CNN town hall in Las Vegas, Nevada, former Vice President Joe Biden, 77, pledged not to run for a second White House term if his “mental acuity” declines.

A transcript is as follows:

TOWN HALL QUESTIONER: Some expressed concern about the ages of you and Senator Sanders. Would you, if you are the nominee, go as far as to commit to only one term if it meant uniting our party?
JOE BIDEN: No, I wouldn’t do that. But, I’ll tell you what: you’re going to be able to make a judgment. And by the way, the two youngest men on the stage now or me and Buttigieg. That’s the way it goes, you know what I mean? But look, It’s totally legitimate for you all to ask about my age, or anybody else’s age up there and our health. That’s why I give all my medical records. Everything, okay? The whole deal, so you know who I am.
Anybody who starts off saying “I’m only going to serve one term” is already behind the 8-ball because then you’re a one-term president, and no one worries what the hell is gonna happen after that. All the woman on that stage, including the woman you’re leaning toward, is over 70 years of age, and I’m in pretty good health… If anything changed in my health, making it incapable of me to fully exert all the energy and mental acuity that was needed to be done, then I give you my word: I would not run again.

Apparently he doesn't realize it already has ...... a lot.....so much so that Warren can now out debate him.....truthfully, that would have never happened 5 or 10 years ago....

Yes, it's obvious that he was much sharper even back in 2008 and during his VP years. Of course, he's always been good for a gaffe at any moment, but now he clearly looks and speaks like an old man.

It is a shame. I never agreed with the man, but to slip so much and not have your family tell you is really bad. He is being embarrassed by people whom he would have run circles around in debates

I hate to set limits on age because there are occasionally folks in their late 70s who can outwork people half their age. On the other hand, time is not on their side, and I had problems with a number of candidates who are under 40 and over 70. I think age 50 - 60 is a good range for a president: the candidate is old enough to have some useful life experience but young enough to handle the stress of a world war or other crisis.

I agree, Meemur - Trump, as well as Reagan, are good examples of men who were/are able to do quite well into their 70s in terms of vigor and sharpness (though by some accounts Reagan was starting to go downhill in the second term).

It does not inspire confidence to see Biden stumbling over himself and Sanders turn red in the face as his hands and lips tremble with the stress and rage he harbors inside. I truly think Bernie may not make it to the election without another heart attack.

Hill is no spring chicken herself. Though we'd be lucky if Joe is even out of bed by 3 pm.

To my knowledge, it's never been a winning strategy to rule out a second term. It hamstrings you out of the gate, and if you have to even bring it up, it means there are already serious (not potential) doubts as to your abilities.

I think the field will look different by the next Iowa State Fair. I hope Bloomie has dropped out by then. I avoid the circus as much as I can, but if I'm working at the fair, I have to sit there and deal with whatever happens. Some of the candidates' security people are extremely rude!

I didn't realize Klobuchar was nearing 60. I thought early 50s at the oldest. Still clearly the youngest woman on the stage.

Bloomberg has the money to go all of the way to the convention. He knows the rats are running the ship, so he has a good possibility to broker the nomination.

Then he can spend most his money on this 'last hoorah" and still leave billions to his family. I expect there to be landslide millenial turnout for Sanders, and also among younger than millennials, but also expect MANY fence sitters and moderate dems to jump to Trump. Business people, working class. I mean, they may have Dem/socialist values.. but they've seen how far we've slid (to the left) as a country, and how well we did under Trump... I'm expecting highest voter turnout ever, by 10+%... last election some 50+% of eligible voters didn't vote.. so if a few of those are "incensed" by the Bern or the MAGAMAN, it could be a nail biter.... I still think more likely most of the "gimme dats" have turned in to "deliver me dats" and will not show up at the polls. They want food stamps. They want baby formula. They want free healthcare, child support, college, and they want $15/h if not a 'basic income', AND THEY WANT IT DELIVERED!! Sorry, gimmes, we don't deliver pols!! (actually now the dems are doing a lot moe remote voting... I don't think that'll boost the apathetic...
