Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Education, Betsy DeVos, told Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) at her Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday that “there’s nothing in life that’s truly free” when the Vermont senator asked if she would support his efforts to make public college education free for all students.

Sanders first read a portion of DeVos’ prepared statement, which said: “Students should make informed choices about what kind of education they want to pursue post-high school, and have access to high-quality options.”

“Some of us believe we should make public colleges and universities tuition-free, so that every young person in this country, regardless of income, does have that option. That’s not the case today,” Sanders said. “Will you work with me and others to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, through federal and state efforts?”

“Senator, I think that’s a really interesting idea, and it’s really great to consider and think about,” DeVos responded. “But I think we also have to consider the fact that there’s nothing in life that’s truly free.”

DeVos, a billionaire conservative activist who supports funding charter schools to diversify education options, is a controversial choice to head the Education Department for liberal senators like Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Patty Murray (Wash.), and Sanders.

DeVos said at her confirmation hearing that school gun policies should be left to the states and would not rule out cutting funds to public schools in order to privatize them, positions that Senate Democrats at the hearing disagreed with.

Trump’s choice for education secretary was chair of the American Federation for Children, an advocacy group that promotes the movement to privatize public education and the use of public funds for vouchers to pay for private school tuition. She also led the growth of charter schools in Michigan, although many of these schools’ students test scores were below the state’s average.

Sanders appealed to many millennials throughout his 2016 presidential campaign by saying that public college education should be made free.

“Somebody’s going to pay for it,” DeVos noted at her hearing.

I'd say that Betsy DeVos hits the nail on the head with this Marxist in that ‘There’s Nothing in Life That’s Truly Free.’

Most of us regular folk want the .gov to stay out of our way and let us make a living to support our families like my wife and I did as we helped two (2) of our kid's get some college and (they did get some helpful grants and such) while the third (3) went into the service.

Someone wants to go to college, figure a way in doing so and don't make me help pay for your education when I helped pay for my kid's.

My parents and I could not afford college for me so I went into the service.

You don't have the money for college, join the military like I did.

I don't owe you a college education anymore than I owe you a car, house etc.

Yes tuition is expensive, in the thick of it right now, but room and board cost a lot too. Then you have books. Then all these crazy fees. While "free" tuition would help, it still is expensive. We looked at a local university. Even if you live at home, in our case 15 minutes away, you have to buy a meal plan. Can't get around that. Frustrating.

Mrs. DeVos did an excellent job in front of the committee.
I hope the RINOs don't stab her in the back.
She has good conservative ideas and is a hard worker.

They're charging what the market will bear. What with Pell grants and student loans, the sky's the limit!

Used to be, young people would save up during high school with part time jobs and also sometimes work through college. Now? Very hard. PLUS the courses taught are mostly garbage, and over 90% of all professors are hardcore commiepukes, and send a kid off to college is guaranteeing (except for a few good ones) that he'll be exposed to the worst of indoctrination.

A lot of young people don't need a 4 year "liberal arts" degree anyway. We need more vocational schools, and fewer colleges/universities that teach gender studies, history of racism, and LBTGQWYXZcrap plus teaching that men are toxic and evil and all white people are devils.

My 22yo is doing this. She worked through high school and lived at home while going to community college until she was 21 while putting it all towards college. She transferred to a college 5 hours away last year and finally had to take out a student loan for this semester. She said she doesn't understand how everyone spends money like crazy in college. She always wants to know their financial situation (she doesn't ask them though). I tell her they are probably living off student loans and racking up massive debt.

She should have asked him if he would be willing to support a $4,000 a month property tax on his $600K vacation home in order to pay for "free" higher education. Clearly he isn't paying his fair share if he has $600K to drop on a vacation property.

That doesn't sound "fair"! It should be higher than 4K. He can afford it. Right?

Sarcasm off.

I was somewhat like your daughter. I stayed home and drove to college. I went to a major university that at the time was more commuter focused. While I defiantly saved money the experience wasn't all that great. When young people are out of high school they really need to be on their own in order to grow. Living at home sucked, driving twenty miles to school sucked. The only benefit was that my small group of high school friends did the same thing, otherwise I likely would've had a really boring life for the first couple of years. I finally became more social when I turned 20. Most of the kids your daughter sees will have debt, but they are doing what many before them did. Higher education is ran by a bloated upper admin structure they puts their high wages and lucrative benefits above everything else. I recently met a young women who paid out-of-state tuition and now owes $150K. She basically didn't pay a dime back while going to school. Her parents never went to college and I don't know their financial situation. She has entered a field where she will make about $60K to $80K within a few years. She will be able to pay back what she owes, but think of that amount of money that could've been used for a home, vacations, a car, etc..
