Beagles rescued from a breeding facility in Virginia got to play outside for the first time on Monday.

The 30 dogs arrived in Pennsylvania last week from an Envigo facility as part of a transfer plan following a lawsuit filed against the company by the Department of Justice alleging animal welfare act violations. Approximately 4,000 beagles were removed from the Virginia facility and taken to shelters or rescue organizations in several states.

These dogs are not typical dogs. They were being raised for research and have never touched grass or drank water from a bowl.

The adult dogs are getting spayed or neutered this week and will soon be ready for their new homes.

If you're interested in adopting a rescued beagle, go to the Humane Society of the United States website to find a facility that received some of them.

Approximately 4,000 beagles are heading to the HSUS's shelter and rescue partners across the country while our Animal Rescue Team is in the process of removing them from a mass breeding facility. The facility, which was raising the dogs for experimentation, has received multiple violations for issues such as inadequate veterinary care and insufficient food.
This is a huge undertaking—one of the largest in our organization’s history—and it wouldn’t be possible without our shelter and rescue partners who offered to take in these beagles and find them loving homes. We’re so grateful to each and every one of them.

Our partner organizations
If you're interested in adopting, fostering or donating to a local shelter or rescue in your area that is assisting with the placement of the dogs, please contact the individual organizations below for more information.
Please note that each shelter will have its own process for foster and adoption requests and we cannot guarantee that each interested adopter will receive a dog. If you are unable to adopt one of the approximately 4,000 beagles, we encourage you to consider adopting one of the many other pets waiting for a loving home at your local shelter or rescue group.

You can be part of this historic effort and help pave the path to a much brighter future for 4,000 dogs—here's how!
FOSTER
If you have the capacity, consider fostering a beagle or a litter of puppies to help them acclimate to life in a home environment. Our partners can only help us when they have the capacity (often through foster homes) to take in additional animals. Fostering is a great option if you’re not able to care for a dog permanently or want to make sure a pup is a good match before making an adoption decision.
ADOPT
Reach out to the shelters and rescues directly to learn about their adoption procedures and how to get started. If a beagle isn’t a good fit for your family, consider adopting a different canine (or feline) companion—you’ll be freeing up space and alleviating the workload for the group’s dedicated staff and volunteers during a busy time. And if you don’t end up with a beagle from this situation, consider opening your heart and home to one of the tens of thousands of shelter pets currently in need.
VOLUNTEER
Another way to help the beagles hands-on is to volunteer with one of our shelter and rescue partners. Volunteering can look like a lot of different things—it’s not just scrubbing down kennels. You may be working directly with animals or helping with administrative, fundraising or other behind-the-scenes tasks. Reach out to the organizations directly to learn about current volunteer opportunities and how they can use your skills.
DONATE
Finally, one of the easiest ways to help is to donate directly to the shelters and rescues taking in beagles. Monetary donations will help these organizations provide the best care possible and equip them to continue to assist in large-scale rescue operations. If you prefer to donate supplies, ask the shelters and rescues what they currently need or check their online wish lists for items you can have shipped directly to them. (Most organizations share their wish lists on their websites or on retail sites such as Chewy or Amazon.)

I guess I did.

I stopped reading the monster "main" Covid thread a long while back--it's like trying to get a drink of water out of a fire hydrant. You can't find anything in there.

Plus--I can't STAND reading about that devil-possessed False-y.

There are whole months I don't visit the Corkboard. Other threads, same. Get busy and life happens.

Now that all are up to speed, if you can't foster or adopt one of these fur babies, send some green. Make dog beds, send medical suplies. Do something. These kiddos have been rescued from literal Hell on Earth. They deserve a fighting chance. :rdog:

Those in the video are just 8-9 week old puppies - probably playing with their litter-mates. They look and act perfectly normal to me.

Haha...and before you all go adopting a beagle, look into some of their breed behavior quirks. They are hounds and the nose rules, with an unbelievable capacity for tuning everything and everybody else out.

I knew a beagle that was scheduled to be euthanized as the research physician to whom he was assigned submitted papers for retirement. We all knew that was the procedure but Red was not used for any harmful biological studies. Death seemed so unfair. I stayed late doing my lab calculations. When it was quiet, I went to the animal facilities and stole Red. My coworkers had an idea what would happen but they feigned ignorance and never divulged the truth. Beagles are very compliant, are not aggressive and are the dog of choice. I personally find the whole practice distasteful.....
