Avian flu confirmed in three grizzly bears euthanized in Montana

BY JEREMY TANNER - 01/18/23 8:06 PM ET

(NEXSTAR) – Three juvenile grizzly bears found disoriented and suffering from neurological issues such as partial blindness tested positive for avian flu, Montana wildlife officials confirmed Tuesday.

The bears were found in poor condition last fall and were euthanized, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

“We suspect these mammals probably get the virus from consuming infected birds,” said FWP Wildlife Veterinarian Jennifer Ramsey in a news release. One was found in Augusta, another in Dupuyer and the third in Kalispell, all located in northern Montana.

They were the first documented cases of the virus in grizzly bears, according to Montana officials. U.S. Department of Agriculture records on bird flu in mammals show that another grizzly bear, living in a zoo, died around the same time as the Montana cases.

Montana wildlife officials didn’t immediately respond to Nexstar’s request for additional information.

Tests last year also confirmed HPAI in a fox and a skunk in Montana, officials said. In other countries, the disease has been documented in animals including pigs, cats, dogs, tigers, and leopards, among others.

The bird flu hit U.S. egg farmers especially hard last year, prompting the slaughter of tens of millions of chickens and driving up the price of eggs in the process.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI or H5N1), can be fatal to poultry and has ripped through bird populations in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa since December 2003, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The virus could potentially spread to people and cause serious disease, according to the CDC, although the risk is considered to be very low. Wildlife officials urge people to take precautions when handling game birds; sick or dead birds; or other mammals.

“Even if an animal is not suspected to have died from a contagious disease, gloves should always be worn if a dead animal must be handled for disposal,” Montana FWP said.

Sooo, does that mean this crap is now mutating?
Not necessarily. If the bears ate freshly killed birds, the virus would still be viable and might not have had to mutate. If you do some digging on Flutrackers.com, years ago humans got it from putting freshly killed raw chicken in their mouths. Some sort of ritual. Indonesia? Malaysia? I don't really remember exactly where it was. Like I posted it was years ago.

The real question is: did the virus mutate in the bears, possibly mixing genetic material with a flu the bears carried? If it did, who and what was exposed to it and how communicable is it to humans? In the past a novel strain of flu was traced back to pigs and ducks that were housed closely together.

The precedent for isolating and probably killing humans who come down with “Avian flu” has just been set. You know, for the children. Killing off the chicken farms and the backyard flocks is just not going to cut it. Satan needs everyone to die. it used to be that there is no more efficient way to de-populate the earth than war. Now we have bio-weapons, and governments which last century killed more of their own people than other country’s people (referring to Marxist nations). We are still pretty good at killing other nation’s people’s, but we have definitely stepped up our game at killing our own with “the vax”...
Of course, the Muslim nations have never been slackers at killing anybody they were outraged with.

Think China set that precedent with COVID over the last couple years.

I will be curious to see if the big bird sellers like TSC, Farm and Fleet will have chicks and ducklings in store here shortly-also places like Murray McMurray Hatchery- I used to order from them, anybody buy from a place like that recently?

I checked Murray McMurray a few days ago and they were taking orders - no problem. Get 'em in quick though because I have a feeling the weeks' hatches will book fast.

Personally, this coming spring, no WAY would I buy chicks from feed stores, swaps or private parties. Too many random dipsticks handling them and zero biosafety considerations. Also, keep them indoors, under cover as long as possible this spring so they have less exposure to the migrating wild bird population.

Friend of mine orders a couple hundred chicks, poults and ducklings for a heritage baby animal show every year. Orders early to get his delivery dates and breeds he wants. Last year a third of what he ordered didnt come because of the bird flu. Be interesting to see about this year.

I suspect the jury is still out on that. Over the last few years there have been lots of articles about “gain of function” research here in the states and canada that got sent to China because it was “too dangerous” to pursue here. China may have been the actual target...

Next they'll want to euthanize our chickens...you know, for our own good. That's what I'm afraid of. We'd lose a major source of protein for folks striving for food self sufficiency.
