AT&T informs users of data breach and resets millions of passcodes

U.S.

March 30, 2024 / 2:51 PM EDT / CBS/AP

AT&T said it has begun notifying millions of customers about the theft of personal data recently discovered online.
The telecommunications giant said Saturday that a dataset found on the "dark web" contains information such as Social Security numbers for about 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.
The company said it has already reset the passcodes of current users and will be communicating with account holders whose sensitive personal information was compromised.

It is not known if the data "originated from AT&T or one of its vendors," the company said in a statement. The compromised data is from 2019 or earlier and does not appear to include financial information or call history, it said. In addition to passcodes and Social Security numbers, it may include email and mailing addresses, phone numbers and birth dates.
It is not the first crisis this year for the Dallas-based company.

New York prosecutors said they are opening an investigation into a wireless network outage in February that left thousands of AT&T customers across the U.S. without cellphone service for roughly 12 hours.
The outage, which also affected some Consumer Cellular, T-Mobile, UScellular and Verizon subscribers, led to widespread frustration by phone users and briefly disrupted 911 service in some communities.
AT&T apologized for the network disruption and offered a $5 credit to customers.

AT&T Reveals Easter Weekend Surprise For Customers: 73 Million Accounts Leaked On Dark Web

Millions of AT&T Inc. users received bad news from the third-largest US retail wireless carrier this Easter holiday weekend: Their personal data has been leaked onto the dark web.

In a press release on Saturday, the telecommunications giant said it has "determined that AT&T data-specific fields were contained in a data set released on the dark web approximately two weeks ago" and contains "personal information such as social security numbers."

"It is not yet known whether the data ... originated from AT&T or one of its vendors," the company said, adding, "Currently, AT&T does not have evidence of unauthorized access to its systems resulting in exfiltration of the data set."

The statement continued: "Based on our preliminary analysis, the data set appears to be from 2019 or earlier, impacting approximately 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and approximately 65.4 million former account holders."

According to Bloomberg data, AT&T is the third-largest US retail wireless carrier, behind Verizon Communications Inc. and T-Mobile US Inc. It's also the largest telecom company that has disclosed the theft of its customers' personal information.

In 2022, T-Mobile paid $350 million to settle a class-action lawsuit over leaked data from over 50 million customers. Then, in 2023, the cellphone carrier revealed another major breach of "basic customer information" on 37 million customers.

Of, course, in the PR world, save the bad news for a holiday weekend...

That's not encouraging. Was thinking about switching to AT&T from T-Mobile; get better reception with AT&T out here.

Ok am I missing something! Why does AT&T need your social security Number?
Here in my home we refuse to use the internet for banking or doing taxes from my home computer as it's way to high a risk.

Credit checks. Smarter folks make the argument, you are not getting that information.

ATT is very close to being part of dotguv.

It's an incestuous relationship.
I know someone that recently retired from their. He still holds a clearance in case they need him back.

Att and the gov is an incestual relationship.

A pay-as-you go ATT phone or hotspot required no SSN. For that matter I don't even think they have my name or anything. Of course I still buy phone cards with cash and load them onto the phone for up to three months. I don't use the smartest phone but I think you can bring any phone you like. It's the only service that works at home.

The problem is 'the cloud' mentality. Anyone can access anything from anywhere, what could possibly go wrong?
