Any Herbal/Other Remedies for Prostate Problems?

Hi,
I'm doing some searches on natural remedies for prostate problems. Does anyone know of anything that works? As to the problem, I'm not too sure yet myself, just that there might be a problem--DH has an appointment with an urologist in a week. It might not even be a prostate problem but a bladder problem or some other problem. :shr: But it can't hurt to be prepared with some alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs. I'm not against using pharmaceutical drugs when needed, but sometimes the better way is natural.

Saw Palmetto has been found to work very well for enlarged prostate glands and thereby normalizing the PSA. Do a search, you will be amazed.

I know! I've done a search- would you believe even natural progesterone use is good! I was also wondering if anyone here knew firsthand what seems to work best.

Definitely saw palmetto! It's one of the real shining stars of herbal therapy, at least in terms of proven benefits even by scientifically rigorous standards. It has actually outperformed Proscar (the standard drug treatment) in several studeis!

Zinc is crucial to health prostate functioning as well. An old time remedy for prostate problems was to eat 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds a day. Pumpkin seeds are loaded with zinc, and essential fatty acids as well. Zinc is a potent immune system component as well, and some men have cleared up long standing prostatis (actual infection or inflammation of the prostate) with zinc supplementation.

One more hint... although it may be a delicate subject. Men who are sexually active regularly have the fewest prostate problems. Regular, frequent (within reason.. I've seen figures of minimum of 2 times a week) ejaculation is important for health in this area.

My DH has an enlarged prostate and saw palmetto has helped him dramaticly. Now he complains that he is in the bathroom all the time draining his bladder. I don't tell him how much ginger I give him as a diuretic for his BP. heheheh What he doesn't know won't hurt him.

TOMATOES!

If your hubby isn't a tomato eater, you may want to persuade him.. they are rich in lycopene which is great for combatting prostate problems.. also, they are richer in lycopene and better for him if cooked vs raw.

Below are a few articles about the lycopene in tomatoes & how it helps the prostate:
(a search on lycopene & tomatoes + prostate may provide more reports..)

I didn't know that ginger acts as a diuretic! Are you sneaking it in his food or as a supplement?

Ginger is one of the best diuretics you can use. It automaticly replaces the potassium you expel. I get it in capsules and include it in his morning and night meds. He never looks at them, just downs them. He wouldn't know what he was looking at anyway.

I also add it to many dishes. It helps cut down the gas when eating beans. It is 5 times more powerful a digestive than papaya. It has the same ingredient that peppers have to make them hot, so if capsicum is the ingredient your symptom calls for, ginger should do the same job.

Always be careful with ginger if you are on blood thinners as it accentuates the thinning of the blood. I am allergic to aspirin so I take ginger instead to keep my blood from forming clots. They always ask me if I am on coumerin (sp) whenever I have blood drawn. Ginger keeps the platelets from sticking together so stop taking it before surgery. Be sure to tell your Dr. of all meds and herbs you take so he can adjust treatments accordingly.
