my first guess is that it might have been an "installed" lawn made up of rolls of pre-grown or harvested sod, that, once laid down, grew together into a strong woven-like mat, sitting atop perhaps a bed of clay/rocky/hard-packed sub-soil where the roots of the sod/mat never could reach into. after 3" of rain, the mat started to float.

or....the lawn is actually a thin layer of grass grown over a kettle-bottom, in which case, if that fellow jumps up and down enough he might go right through and into the pond beneath...
