I have had a cough on and off for a month, was given some antibiotics but the doctor would not give me any more saying it was a viral infection i had would have this cough for the next 2-3 weeks and it would get worse before it will get better.

I am going after it with over the counter cough medicine, honey. lemon and ginger tea, vitamin c and zinc and sambucol, is there anything else i should be including to help with this.

Thanks in advance
Michael

if it is a viral infection i wonder why he gave you antibiotics. did he test you for anything to find out what you have picked up?

is it a dry hacking cough or a wet one where you are coughing up mucus? is the mucus clear/whitish, yellow or greenish? when you get to green, that is good, you are getting close to the end of the infection and are kicking its butt. sounds like you are doing some good things with the lemon, honey, ginger, sabucol, etc. those all should be able to help you. are you taking enough sambucol and vit c to fight the virus? i use homemade elderberry tincture and take about 2T about six times a day for up to 2 weeks -and after symptoms end, to fight off some crud.

if you have stuff in your lungs you want to cough it out but there are a few things i do for an irritating cough at bedtime so i can sleep. you need your rest.

this sounds silly, but it works-
find some vicks vaporub or a mentholated chest rub with eucalyptus in it, slather it all over the bottom of your feet Really good, put socks on and go to bed. ive done this for a few years and as odd as it sounds, it works to quiet the coughing so you can sleep. you will, however, smell like one big cough drop.

elecampagne is an herb that really helps with quieting a cough, tincture or tea.

if you have a tight chest filled with mucus you are trying to cough out, rub some on your chest at night too, in the am take a really hot shower and stand in and cough some of the loose stuff up. if you can get some eucalyptus essential oil, spray or toss a few drops on the walls of the shower then turn the hot water on to get a nice steam going and get in, it will loosen up your lungs real well.

keep pounding the sambucol and vit c and zinc it will certainly help you.
i hope you kick it soon and get to feeling better.

Have you started any new meds? Some beta blockers (especially lisinopril) will cause a dry cough as a side effect.

Everything jazzy said is right. One addition - lots and lots and lots of fluids. Till you feel like your back teeth are floating. It will keep any mucus thinned, and unless you have heart failure, it's not a big deal. Honey works as well as most OTC cough syrups, with fewer side effects.

Thanks for the advice, i will stick with the vit c and sambucol, will double up on the vit c. I do use the vicks vapor rub on my feet but it never lasts all night i can not sleep with socks on so i end up taking them off in the middle of the night but it has been helping calm the cough so i could sleep.

Moldy not started any new meds
