Oregon town considers becoming 'illegal alien-free zone'

A big debate is brewing in a small Oregon coast range town: Residents of Willamina are considering turning their town into the country's first illegal immigrant-free zone.

It would allow police to stop anyone they think is in the country illegally.

City councilor Paul Delaney started it all with his proposal to allow sheriff's deputies to ask anyone in the city to prove their citizenship.

“The cops in town know the people in the town. If you see a bunch of different people, you should have the right to know who's in your town,” he said.

Delaney said he believes illegal immigrants bring crime, so he wants to grant sheriff's deputies the authority to stop and question anyone about their immigration status.

However, many in the community say all the proposal does is legalize racism.

At a special city council meeting Thursday night, the small chamber overflowed with dissenting opinions.

Willamina has a population of approximately 1,800.

This will hold up in court until about 30 seconds after the judge is seated. Nice idea, but absolutely doomed to failure from the get-go.

Here in Eugene, the county is starved for funds. They don't 'ask for ID' but it seems the jail is half full of illegals waiting for the federal gov to pick up and force back home.

All the while, the county (which is beyond starved for funds) collects 'rent' on the illegals from the federal gov.

This money is very important, in that it pays for the housing of the other 1/2 of the population.

Right now, besides the illegals, only violent fellons are housed in the county jail. In Lane county and Eugene, only fellonys are investigated. If they find someone, they get a court date. Only the most violent (where weapons were used, or someone got hurt or killed) are locked up.

But it is not the illegals that take up jail space... they presence pays the salary, electric bill, upkeep, food, etc... to house the other resident violent fellons.
