I can remember heading north to my parent’s camp one mid October with the kids for “Christmas in October” before they left for the winter to go to Florida. Probably in the early to mid eighties. The forests on the mountains were brilliant in their colors but also covered with an early snowfall. Earliest I had ever known. Can happen anywhere anytime I guess. But I don’t remember the kinds of heavy snow and really cold winters that I grew in here in maine back in the fifties. Not looking forward to a rerun of them either.

Odd that my snow site doesn't show any snow in that area in the last seven days and I haven't seen anything on the weather radar.... Hmmmm

that is odd. DS lives in near Morganton and rides his bike most weekends on the parkway. It's on several mainstream news pages too. What site do you use?

thanks for the news of snow in the mountains
I would never expect snow, rain, fog, or cold in mountains

Is this odd for that area for this time of the year?
Not particularly “odd” but admittedly a little earlier than it has been over the last decade or so. Typical to get a hard frost in October - but it also depends on your altitude
