A young buck muley in the front yard of our complex that Angel and I got to enjoy for a few minutes on a walk last week.

Angel’s been doing such a great job in our long walks, learning new commands almost weekly at just over a year old. She and I came down the sidewalk in front of this deer, continued down to the corner and turned right to head east a few blocks.

We stopped at the corner just to my right here, to quietly enjoy this beautiful animal just grazing, right before the golden hour of sunset.

Angel never barked, and only got a little antsy…but she held steady. Mule deer are everywhere here in town, and Angel has seen many. I’m very proud of her.

My late Josie used to have fun chasing does out of the back yard when we lived on 10 acres out at Ocean Lake in Pavillion, in central Wyoming.

Then, one morning just past sunrise as I was getting my motorcycle ready in the garage before heading off to work, a huge buck was grazing on the luscious green grass of our 1 acre back yard, as I passed through the open gate of my stockade fence to enter the side door of the garage. Josie had followed me out, which she did every morning… a morning ritual we shared.

I saw the deer standing there, backlit by the brilliant glow of the rising sun. I didn’t hesitate going inside, because I didn’t want to spook it. After going in, I turned to slowly poke my head just past the door jamb, and to get a better view, but it had already turned and slowly loped away toward the lake. Josie watched keenly at this magnificent intruder into our world.

Instead of barking to protect “her” yard, Josie had stopped just after crossing our back porch onto the grass, and quietly laid down to watch over the buck, easily an eight point of more trophy animal.

I was never more impressed about Josie’s discernment to choose her battles, or not. Never saw her attack a living animal in the ten years we had her. She did chase many squirrels, occasional rabbits, and a ton of thrown tennis balls…but she loved to play.

I do miss her so…
