People are so ignorant of farming, animal husbandry etc. it's ridiculous. Farrowing crate is to keep sow from flopping down and killing her piglets. Even with the crates it still happens. BTW sows don't carefully lay down, the flop down onto their sides so the piglets can nurse.

Peacock's screams are enough to terrorize a person especially in the middle of the night without a physical attack. You want a living alarm system geese and peacocks are up to the job.

Homemade Nilla Wafers
Homemade Nilla Wafers
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/3 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

Cream butter and sugar together. Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients separately (and yes, that is baking powder and not baking soda), and then add to creamed ingredients and mix well. If you want true Nilla Wafer size cookies, roll about a teaspoon (like measuring spoon teaspoon size) of dough into a ball and flatten it with your fingers. The cookies will spread quite a bit, so place them about two inches apart on the cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Cool on cookie sheet for 5 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack.

(Cookie evaluation: These are kinda plain little cookies--no chips, no nuts, no spices or frosting. But apparently they were sufficiently tasty. At any rate, they're way better than I remember those Nilla Wafer-hockey pucks tasting. I forgot to set any aside for garnishing the top of the pie. Oops.)

Banana Cream Pie with Homemade Nilla Wafers
That’s awesome!!!
Thank you so much for sharing!
I’m not a big sugar person but I do adore these and shortbread types of cookies!
Not as sweet!

Peacocks - GRRR! Neighbor in MO had one that kept coming onto my property, raping setting guinea hens, and eating the eggs as they pipped. I asked her several times to keep the SOB on her own place. He came over one too many times, and was met with my .22. I drug the SOB to the back forty for the coyotes. Owner came by a day or two later, asking if I'd seen her peacock. I said, "No, I haven't seen him for a few days!" I think she really knew what happened, and I wasn't saying.

First time I ever heard a peacock scream, I thought someone was torturing a cat!

BTW.....are Peacock

Just a big pheasant.
Having actually worked on a Hog Farrowing Farm in the early 80's where we had 5,000 sows producing feeder pigs to a COOP of finishing farms....THE ONLY REASON we used Farrowing Crates (farrowing = birthing) was to keep the sows from smashing half their litters into pancakes. Some breeds of hog are better mothers than other and some are dumb as a rock.

All our sows gestated out in large pens on concrete (for sanitation) and had plenty of room to roam around with their "sisters". We even gave them bowling balls to play with. Ever seen hog soccer? They were brought into the Farrowing houses, washed from top to bottom and put into clean sanitized Farrowing Crates about a week before they gave birth and remained in there until the piglets were weened. The "birthing crates served two purposes: they kept bad mothers from smashing their babies and other sows from eating them! Once the piglets were weened, the sows then went back into their large outdoor pens and the piglets were housed indoors in runs in groups of about 20-30 piglets with plenty of room to run about, play and eat. The indoor units were heated and air-conditioned depending on the time of the year....in Colorado.

We did not put any of our hogs on dirt for sanitation reasons. There are several very nasty hog diseases that once in the soil can take decades and decades to finally die out and be safe to put pigs back on.

I don't know how other operators run their operations elsewhere, but ours was humane, gentle and clean. If you didn't work on the farm you didn't come onto the farm.....PERIOD! Even workers had to park vehicles away from any animals housings and runs, pass through a clean room, replace any "city" clothing and shoes/boots with shop coveralls and farm boots to avoid bringing animal diseases from other farms and anywhere else onto the property.

That farm would pass any of these new regulations they are trying to put out today with flying colors. Yes there are probably enough unscrupulous farmers to make this an issue, but I think the biggest reason is all the Nazi Vegans and such that just want to stop any meat production at all.

The people I buy my locally produced meat from raise all their animals with care and respect or I wouldn't deal with them. It can be done and it's not really that difficult.

I would have to say that I agree with you completely. Especially the Agenda.

Best security system you can have. Most of them are mean, and hate, and will attack men.
One of my friends got ALL of her delivery service cut off because of hers. The 2nd time she beat her male off the UPS man with the broom, they told her she would have to have her stuff delivered elsewhere.
I have no idea what they'd taste like...
this is what i remember from my childhood......... they are incredibly proud and mean as hell.......

My sister checked at WM for me today and the only turkeys she could find were the tiny Butterball boneless breasts that were really expensive. I told her no thanks. Will hopefully be going to my small town grocery store tomorrow AM and sure hope I can find turkey there!

Work at a Wally World as you all know every department had over 3-6 hundred price changes between Friday and today. Only about 1 out of 25 went down. All the rest were up some only 10-30 cents others 3-6 dollars. Items that went down were mostly seasonal, like knife sets and some hunting stuff not all yet they will wait till a week after deer season before they start that. This included grocery items.

Yup...the candy aisles seemed sorta thin this year, though I was able to score one more box of candy canes for the Christmas Tree yesterday.

Finally had to break down and buy a plain non-spiral cut ham for Christmas dinner yesterday at .88/lb . Had been waiting for Aldi to have the spirals on special, but not this week either. Oh well.

Pretty much set for dinner, baking and munchies. Looking forward to staying home now through the weekend.

I ventured out yesterday morning to both our Kroger and Meijer for last minute dinner items.
Both stores were fully stocked.
Meijer is “a joy” to shop in vs Kroger!!

They are fully staffed, no holes in product and appear to be “happier”, in there overall??
Kroger was a total madhouse, understaffed, and the parking lot was literally just a mess....the only positive I can say is they also had plenty of everything as well as an excellent sale on hams; I got another one of those .79 cents/lb hams for 6$....I’m not fond of Sugardale brand because I think they’re salty and just not that good probably filled with chemicals etc, but, I’ll take it for 6$!

Seems it might come in handy after all anyway since DH has the flu :(
I expect, even though his fever broke, I will NOT be dragging him to my sisters house this weekend....***sigh.... we had such good plans, too.

He’ll insist we go once he feels a little better and I’ll have to put my foot down. It’s not worth it even IF he thinks he’s all better.

Tell him to STAY HOME! It's not worth it, and really unfair to give influenza for Christmas!
I will say that ivermectin really seems to work on "influenza like illnesses" (weren't tested, but it hit hard like flu) at the standard dosages.

That’s what I figured, it’ll deal with most viral flu.
No, we won’t go, I’ve just now broke the news to my sister. :(

It’ll be ok.

I'm sorry! It sucks, especially when you were all looking forward to getting together. We've had it happen... I swore hubby's holiday tradition was catching either a stomach bug or the flu on Christmas Eve! Then there was the Christmas a few years ago... I was preparing for 27 people (and 9 overnight guests who were leaving the day after Christmas) when I developed a full blown Norwalk virus. OMG! I was never so grateful for the master bedroom suite with the bathroom attached! I stayed in the suite, and listened to the festivities... the grown kids cooked everything, and it all turned out fine. Amazingly, no one else caught it!

Oh gosh how awful lol!
I am disappointed of course, and sister is taking it like a trooper. She has lung issues, so no way.

I buy a case of organic candy canes in late November from Hammonds Candy. They are so good. Hubby's Christmas present. They have the regular too cheaper.

Just yesterday talked to my ranching buddy that we get our beef and pork from. Prices for hay jumped from $9/bale to $16/bale in one year....if you can find it. Starter calves prices jumped to $600 and feeder pigs jumped from $40 last year to $200. I image feed prices are headed up as well.

For folks are probably not aware of that 400,000 acre fire in Kansas recently. A lot of ranches and livestock got wiped out, so I'd expect beef prices will go through the roof as a result.

If you live anywhere that still has small holdings, family farms and community supported agriculture better get busy and support them. They may be your only reliable source here pretty soon. I'm already got my order in for beef and pork and have added chickens, duck and quail as well.

BTW.....are Peacocks any good, other than to look at? My ranching buddy just expanded his property and the previous owner left behind a SHITTE-TON of peacocks that are making a mess of everything and somehow seem to avoid the coyotes. He'd like to get rid of them as they are a pain.....are they any good grilled?

Peafowl are of the genus pavonini phasianidae same as pheasants. The were a delicacy in ancient Rome. Guess you'll have to process one and find out. You friend may have "inherited" a peacock feather operation.

I was looking at the LDS online store availability and prices. Their online store seems to be out of white flour and potato flakes. Some items are higher, like apple slices, carrots and all the beans look higher. What seems to still be low are red and white wheat berries, onion price is still the same as last year, I'm not sure about the prices of sugar and rice, but their pastas are still a decent price.

I recently ordered a case of the hard red winter wheat, adding to what I already have. Price seemed good, just don't remember what I paid for it in the past.

God is good all the time

I finally ran into a 'branded' gas station w/ no fuel.

Kroger, Poplar Plaza, Memphis closed at 1730 2 nights ago, 'out of fuel'.
I was the last to tank up.

They're normally 0700-2300 daily.

I drove by yesterday & they were pumping again but 3.29/gal of Reg gas, up about 0.10/gal.

I was buying the cheap brand of bottled water - Niagara - two 24 packs of bottles, for $4 back at the beginning of the year. (Total of 48 bottles). That was the sale price, but it was on sale every other week, so I got to regarding that as its regular price.

Now I have to pay $5 for the same two 24 pack bottles of Niagara brand water. The water has been cycling on and off sale for at least a month at that price, but probably longer than that.

I bought several bottles of distilled water, different brands from different stores, it all has a floral scent to it, so now I'm off to buy a distiller since the water is for my cpap machine.

Yeah, I don't know why we have a super long thread in the bomb shelter on food shortages and price increases, that news is all over the place and it's even on PBS's The Bite with Mike Calameco who seems to parrot everything we say here.
It started with a firsthand warning to the OP, but as is typical around here, the scope expanded rapidly.

The hot dish lunch at the place where I fuel my truck has been $7.25 for at least the past 3 years. Got one the other day, and it was $9.25. The owner happened to be on the till and I said something to him, thinking he had rung it up wrong. He apologized for the increase and said that his biggest food supplier had looked at his made on site food prices and told him that due to inflation over the course of the past year, he was selling close to cost, and suggested the big jump. A man in line behind me overheard the conversation and said that he and his wife had gone to Taco John's for dinner earlier in the week, and the total for the two of them was $30.00.

My daughters have a couple of cats and we buy an Arm & Hammer litter, which has been $7.97 since they got the cats a little over 4 years ago. We have been stockpiling this for a few months in anticipation of the upcoming Venezuela R Us Festival. A couple of weeks ago it jumped to $9.97 for a week, and then to $10.08.

I just bought a Red Baron Supreme pizza for $4.79 at Target. The last time I bought one was in July, about 6 months ago. I got 3 for $10, or $3.33 each.
This is a staggering 50% increase in 6 months.
Dijornos were on sale for 2 for $11, or $5.50 each. They "used" to be $4 each last summer.
K also noticed MASSIVE food shortages in the City Target stor's meat section, several of which date bavk two weeks or more. Finally, what is there is mostly the Target store brand Good Fellow and of mediocre to poor quality.
2022 is going to be a year of cost increases, scarcity and poor quality.

I set up a Walmart pickup for this morning, and loaded up on feed while I was in town It's not getting above zero for temps today, but still likely the best day to be out for at least until sometime next week.

Walmart had everything I ordered except they replaced the cheap Jennio turkey wieners (for pilling the dogs) with the good and more expensive Oscar Meyer's (too good for the dogs!).

The feed store must have just unloaded a truck, because livestock feed was stacked to the rafters, and the variety was back again. Dog food aisles were just as full. They had plenty of what I needed.

Mission accomplished.

Did a small order at Vons in Ca's high desert. Only place I can get deli sliced horseradish cheddar. Out of 16 items the only thing refunded was the LA Brea bread. Normal items like milk, eggs, OJ, lettuce etc. And I was finally able to get Jimmy Dean sausage biscuits.
Price increases that were insane though. Deli roast beef 17.95 lb.

I hadn't been to Walmart and Aldi for a couple weeks, so today was the day.

Walmart...employees in mask of course. 80% of shoppers had no masks. Lots of empty shelves, especially pasta and spaghetti sauce. There was hardly any...maybe 5% of normal if that. Pretty much the same in the condiment aisle. Nearly empty. No bread. No bacon.
Lots of Valentine candy!!

Aldi...employees with masks, but below their nose. Maybe 10% of shoppers had masks, if that. Lots of empty spots scattered across the store. No cinnamon applesauce. :( They did have a lot of the Aldi brand soup for the first time in months!!! Tomato, chicken noodle and the cream of whatever for 57 cents a can!! Frozen case was almost empty. No red bag chicken or much of any chicken, hamburger patties or any sort of meat that comes frozen. Not much bread there either.

I know it is between Christmas and New Years (the non week) is hell on getting anything delivered, but it didn't look good at either store.

Haha. Thinking about masks...of course I was in the smaller Rez/farm town this morning for errands, but I don't think I saw one mask on either store help or shoppers the whole time.
