CRIME Memphis Leads the Way - In Homicides

According to the WREG-TV (Memphis) noon time report, Memphis leads the nation in homicides in the 2020-2021 time period, with over 600 homicides during that time.

That includes yet another homicide that occured just last night. We are experiencing an average of just a bit less than one homicide every day.

Memphis has experienced over 18,000 violent crimes since 2020, which is 3 times the national average.

This ranking was determined from careful examination of the official FBI crime statistics, the TV station news commentator reported.

I am using an old iPhone to post this.

Can somebody please go to the WREG website and copy the article or else link it to this thread? I am not able to do that.

What I would like to know is - how, in heavens name, did we beat out Chicago, or Portland, or any other number of US hot spots, in order to earn this distinction?

memphis has been a cesspool for a long time, very sad

Both of my parents and I were all born in the Methodist Hospital in Memphis

In the summer of 2005 (before Katrina) ex and I went to a 93rd birthday party for an aunt. Many people came and we all stayed in a hotel/motel in Millington. My truck was broken into and so were a couple of other people. This was supposed to be a nice area.

God is good all the time

The race realist-deniers continue to ignore the elephant in the room. As soon as a city of any size winds up with a substantial - or majority - black population, the crime rates soar. It doesn't matter where in the US this is. North, south, east or west, the same pattern repeats. It's as predictable as clockwork.

There's really no sense in arguing the point with those whose eyes refuse to see.

The last time we drove through Memphis at night (midnight to be exact), Cary ran red lights just to keep from having to stop. Thugs were hanging out at every major intersection we went through. Paid hefty traffic fines for doing so, but we lived through the experience.

No way would I go to Memphis, unless it's an emergency. We use to go all the time for fresh baked German bread.

It's our fault.

I've been a patient in that same hospital, and have had several doctor's appointments there. One of my first cousins is a doctor who retired from that hospital. He now lives in Germantown. I refuse to even talk to my doctors about them sending me back up there for testings or treatments. My eye specialist has tried.

Talking of locally baked German bread, did you ever have a chance to check out Backermann’s Bakery on Hwy 64, about 45 minutes west of Selmer, TN?

Hwy 64 does, eventually, lead into Memphis, but it is still safe (and non-Memphis) that far away. Memphis is another hour west of Whiteville, TN - the town Backermann’s is located in.

You might have to call ahead to get the particular type of bread you want, as they might have to specially bake a type of bread that is not in much demand.

I don’t get out to Backermann’s too often, but I go out there when I can. I can get stuff there that I cannot get anyplace else.

The place is owned and operated by local Mennonites.

According to heyjackass.com, Chicago has 806 homicides as of today. The 750-ish number is for homicides committed using firearms. So the Memphis TV station's report is incorrect. However, it would seem that Memphis has a higher per capita homicide rate than Chicago, so maybe that's what they meant.

Our last trip tp Memphis was in 2012, to attend that year's Polite Society event at Rangemaster. Owner Tom Givens announced it would be the last such event in Memphis, as it was too dangerous to continue. He also announced the closing of the facility, which had been built inside Priscilla Presleys old racketball club.

Too dangerous, for one of the nation's premier defensive firearms schools. Consider that, if you would.

No, we've never made the trip. Our favorite bread shop is/was in Germantown. I don't even know if it's still there, and forget the name of the place, since it's been so long that we were there. It was a great little German bakery where you could buy all kinds of meats, cheeses, wines/liquors, bread, candies, etc. all directly imported from Germany. We would go about once a month to buy assorted breads for our freezer.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
I have been afraid to go to Memphis for about the last 10 years>>>St. Louis too!

Bless them, there are still good people there!

In St. Louis, I always get lost in the wrong part of town>>I stopped at a McDonald's to get directions. A black couple stopped me before I got in the door and said>>>"You DON'T want to go in there!"

I told them I was lost and they gave me VERY CLEAR directions on how to get back to the interstate, which is confusing in that area. They were very kind.

In Memphis, I had stopped at a convenience store and a Hispanic man stopped me and said: "You DON'T want to go in there!"

He also gave me VERY CLEAR directions to get where I was going.

Thank GOD that in the midst of the evil going on there are still good Samaritans!

Ioujc,

As I'm sure you know, there are good people in every race, or perhaps more accurately, people of every race are good sometimes. But it's a numbers game and different races have, generally, different proclivities and behavior patterns. Contrary to the progressive's fantasies, stereotypes are usually based in reality.

At the end of the day, most people in any racial or ethnic type tend to gravitate towards and show loyalty towards their own. In the West, this inherent, ingrained tendency is condemned only amongst European people.

I spent a summer in Memphis back in '90. It was sketchy even back then. And of course I was stationed a short time at NAS Millington. What a shit hole. But we had fun. The cockroaches were extremely friendly.

No, WREG is NOT inaccurate.

Chicago has a much larger population than Memphis - about four times as many people live in Chicago.

Memphis has a higher HOMICIDE RATE PER CITY RESIDENT.

As Chicagoman47 has already pointed out, there are about 4 times more people living in Chicago, as opposed to Memphis.

So yeah, Chicago has a higher number of people killed per se, but the homicide rate (read that: an individual person’s risk of being murdered) is much higher in Memphis.

I haven't been to Chicago or Memphis in years by design.

It's the negro ratio most likely.

Compare the demographics

you should be questioning the HUGE differential >>> Chicago is 2.5M vs Memphis 650K === that's roughly 4:1

Chicago would have to have 2,400 murders to begin to have the chaos Memphis has - that's actually 5X the average murder rate Chicago has had previous years - 3Xs the current murder rate

1 in a 1,000 chance of being murdered is damn bad - war zones aren't that bad

Well, the way it was stated in the OP implied absolute numbers, not rates. I did suggest that maybe that’s what the station meant.

That means that the murder rate in Memphis is roughly 1 per every 1000 people. Wow…

and Millington used to be a nice place. Neighbors took care of each other. My folks farmed there since before Millington was there. "Uncle" Tom Millington and my great granddaddy were buddies. Before the base was built, my maternal grandfather was offered a chance to buy a lot of the land that the base sits on. He said what would I want with a bunch of swampland? he regretted not buying it. Daddy joined the Navy there in 1947 and didn't get transferred from there until they started transferring the TARS in 1962. That is how we wound up in GA. My folks are all up on the bluff, in Drummonds, Quito, Shakerag etc. I miss what that area USED to be. I haven't been back since 2008, and doubt that I will ever go again.

Back in 2000 I was interviewing for an executive position with an advertising agency in Memphis. Fortunately, after the second interview, I was politely informed that my style would not be a good fit with their corporate culture. My wife and I were both quite relieved.

Thanks for the great response Ginger. I could only imagine how beautiful it used to be back then. And that is quite a history in your family. Love it! I spent my off time around Shelby Park.

Had to pass through South Memphis back in July. NEVER doing that again. My son and I had our pistols out and kept moving. Was absolutely some of the worst territory I've ever been in here in the states. Have a buddy who is a Detective with Memphis PD and he tells me how really bad it is.

With the size of the gangs hanging out at the intersections, Cary barely slowed down, along with the pick up in front of us. He went right on through, too. We got traffic tickets in the mail to prove it, LOL! There wasn't much traffic on the streets that time of night, but......those traffic cameras got us.
